INTRODUCTION:
The main purpose of this study is to understand the customer satisfaction levels towards 3G
services. Third generation (3G) is the generic term used for the next generation of mobile
communications systems. These have been created to support the effective delivery of a range
of multimedia services. The Indian telecommunications industry is the fastest growing
telecommunications industry in the world, with 723.28 Million telephone (land line and
mobile) Subscribers and 687.71 Million mobile phone connections as of Sep 30th 2010. A
large population, low telephony penetration levels, and a rise in consumers income and
spending owing to strong economic growth have helped make India the fastest-growing
telecom market in the world. 3G services are expected to drive the next phase of growth in
the wireless segment with enhanced focus on providing data services and Internet.
Development of applications useful to people will be the key to success. The Indian market is
highly price sensitive; therefore, it is imperative that relevant applications be made available
to consumers at affordable cost. It is hoped that availability of cheaper handsets together with
useful content will drive the next phase of growth.
Customer satisfaction:Customer satisfaction is the overall essence of the impression about
the supplier by the customers. This impression which a customer makes regarding supplier is
the sum total of all the process he goes through, right from communicating supplier before
doing any marketing to post delivery options and services and managing queries or
complaints post delivery. During this process the customer comes across working
environment of various departments and the type of strategies involved in the organization.
This helps the customer to make strong opinion about the supplier which finally results in
satisfaction or dissatisfaction.
Customer satisfaction refers to the extent to which customers are happy with the products and
services provided by a business. Customer satisfaction levels can be measured using survey
techniques and questionnaires. Gaining high levels of customer satisfaction is very important
to a business because satisfied customers are most likely to be loyal and to make repeated
orders and to use a wide range of services offered by a business.
3G system: UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is a so-called "third-
generation (3G)," broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, andmultimedia at data rates up to and possibly higher than 2 megabits per second (Mbps),

offering a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users no matter where they
are located in the world.3G - Third Generation mobile telephone networks are the latest stage
in the development of wireless communications technology. Significant features of 3G
systems are that they support much higher data transmission rates and offer increased
capacity, which makes them suitable for high-speed data applications as well as for the
traditional voice calls. In fact, 3G systems are designed to process data, and since voice
signals are converted to digital data, this result in speech being dealt with in much the same
way as any other form of data. Third Generation systems use packet-switching technology,
which is more efficient and faster than the traditional circuit-switched systems, but they do
require a somewhat different infrastructure to the 2G systems.
3G stand for the third generation of wireless communication technologies, which support
broadband voice, data and multi-media communications over wireless networks. Speed:
144kb/sec-2mb/sec. 3G Combines a mobile phone, laptop PC and TV Features includes
Phone calls/fax, Global roaming, Send/receive large email messages, High-speed Web
Navigation/maps, Videoconferencing, TV streaming and Electronic agenda meeting
reminder.
Benefits of 3G:
In todays global scenario, 3G technology will enable organisations and qualified candidates
to go about a telephonic interview via video conferencing. Traditional telephonic and
personal interviews may be replaced by 3G voice and video conferencing. This will reduce
costs and save time for both organisations and candidates.
3G-enabled video conferencing can help HR departments interact with all employees in a
firm at the time of urgency without wasting other resources. This can be very helpful when
the concerned person is out of the state or country. With the advent of video and audio
multimedia, and a faster rate of downloading e-mail attachments, employees can request any
urgent file or report they need to present to clients.
This will again reduce the burden on an organisations resources and increase employee
effectiveness. 3G technology will also provide for speedy Internet browsing that will help
employees surf and learn using their 3G cell phones while travelling (m-learning) or from
home.

An organisation can even schedule training modules for employees of other branches through
video conferences. Today the Indian telecom industry offers services such as fixed landlines,
WLL, GSM, CDMA and IP services to customers. Increasing competition among players has
allowed prices to drop drastically, making the mobile facility accessible to the urban middle
and lower-middle class, and to a great extent, in the rural areas, too. Even for small
shopkeepers and factory workers, a phone connection is no longer an unattainable luxury.

ABOUT TELECOM INDUSTRY:
Indias telecom sector has experienced a massive upsurge in recent years, in all respects of
industrial growth. From the days of a state monopoly with very limited growth, it has grown
to the current level with a number of private players driving growth.
The Indian telecom sector, like any other industrial sector in the country, has gone through
many phases of growth and diversification. Starting from the telegraphic and telephonic
systems of the 19th century, communication now involves advanced technologies like GSM,
CDMA, WLL and the 3G technology used in mobile phones. Both public and private players
are investing continuously in this sector, with the customer being the beneficiary.
The Indian telecom sector can be broadly classified into fixed line telephony and mobiletelephony. The major players of the telecom sector are currently experiencing fierce
competition in both the segments. Major players like BSNL, MTNL and VSNL in the fixed
line sector, and Airtel, Hutch, Idea, Tata and Reliance in the mobile segment, are coming up
with new tariffs and discount schemes to gain the competitive advantage. The public and
private players share the fixed line and the mobile segments, with the public sector
controlling more than 60 per cent of the market.
Both fixed line and mobile segments serve the basic needs of local, long distance and
international calls, with the provision of broadband services in the fixed line segment and
GPRS in the mobile arena. Traditional telephones have been replaced by the cordless and
wireless instruments. Mobile phone providers have also come up with GPRS-enabled
multimedia messaging, Internet surfing, and mobile-commerce. The much-awaited 3G
mobile technology is soon going to enter the Indian telecom market. The GSM, CDMA and
WLL service providers are all upgrading themselves to provide 3G mobile services. Along
with an improvement in telecom services, there is also an improvement in manufacturing. In
the beginning, there were only Siemens handsets in India, but now a whole series of new
handsets, such as Nokias latest N-series, Sony Ericssons W-series, Motorolas PDA phones,
etc, are widely available.
Touch screen and advanced handsets are gaining popularity. Radio services have also been
incorporated into mobile handsets, along with other applications like a large memory,
multimedia applications, multimedia games, MP3 players, cameras, etc. The value added

services provided by mobile service operators contribute to more than 10 per cent of the total
revenue.
SCOPE OF THE TELECO INDUSTRY:
The telecom industry is growing at an unbelievable pace and the growth rate is expected to
double with every passing year. There are many new developments in the telecom sector,
including the introduction of 3G technology into the Indian market. From among Indias
leading private and public operators, some are entering foreign markets as well.
GROWTH IN TELECOM:
Key factors, which will fuel the growth of the sector include increased access to services
owing to launch of newer telecom technologies like 3G and BWA, better devices, changing
consumer behaviour and the emergence of cloud technologies. A majority of the investments
will go into the capital expenditure for setting up newer networks like 3G and developing the
backhaul, among other things.
Subscriber Base
The mobile subscriber base in India is estimated rise by 9 per cent to 696 million
connections this year, according to technology researcher Gartner. The mobile service
penetration in the country is currently at 51 per cent and is expected to grow to 72 per cent by
2016.
Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS)
India's current MVAS industry has an estimated size of US$ 2.7 billion. The industry
derives its revenues majorly from the top five to six products such as game based
applications, music downloads, etc, which continue to form close to 80 per cent of VAS
revenues. The Indian MVAS industry estimated to grow to US$ 10.8 billion by 2015, with
the next wave of growth in subscriptions expected to come from semi-urban and rural areas.

Handsets
The mobile handset market's revenues in India will grow from US$ 5.7 billion in 2010
to US$ 7.8 billion in 2016, according to the study. India is the second largest mobile handset
market in the world and is set to become an even larger market with unit shipment of 208.4
million in 2016 at a CAGR of 11.8 per cent from 2010 to 2016.
The Indian handset market witnessed a 14.1 per cent growth in 2011 to touch a total volume
of 182 million handsets. The market continues to be dominated by Nokia with a share of 37.2
per cent, followed by Samsung with 14.9 per cent, G'Five with 7.5 per cent, and Micromax
with 5.8 per cent.
Domestic and Chinese handset makers such as Micromax, G'Five, Karbonn, Spice,Maxx and Lava, have garnered a strong presence in the Indian market due to their feature-
rich, localised products and low price points.
Current Scenario of Indian Telecom Industry
It is a matter of proud to us that the Telecom industry of our India is the second largest
emerging economies of Asia and third largest in whole world. Today, telecom sector of India
is the fastest growing market in the world. Indian telecom industry has provided a robustthrust to the economic growth of country this year.
Recent rapid growth in telecom in India
Our telecom industry in facing a fast growth rate in current era as a result of various positive
and proactive actions of government and by the fruitful combination of both public and
private sector. Liberal policies of the Government that provide easy market access for
telecom equipment and a fair regulatory framework for offering telecom services to the
Indian consumers at affordable prices has facilitated the rapid growth to Indian Telecom
industry.
Main sectors in Telecom (wire line and wireless)
Indian Telecom industry had undergone a considerable change in term of wireless and
landline phones and between public and private participation. Wireless phones are preferred
in both sectors. Participation of the private players in the telecom sector is rapidly increasing
rate there by offering the numerous growth opportunities.

There is a clear cut distinction between the Global Satellite Mobile Communication (GSM)
and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies used.
Current segment wise status of Telecom sector in India
Status of wire line services: With increasing growth and various facilities of thewireless services, the wire line services in the country is almost become motionless.
On the other hand, Broadband services demand has picked up and promises to
stabilize growth of wire line.
Status of wireless servicesGSM Services
In terms of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) subscriber base this now
places India third after China, Russia, and China had 401.7 million GSM Subscribers.
CDMA Services
CDMA technology was introduced in India as a limited mobility solution. The introduction of
CDMA services has created competition, lowered tariffs and offered many citizens access to
communication services for the first time.
Internet Services
Internet services were launched in India on August 15, 1995. In November 1998 the
government opened up the sector to private operators. A liberal licensing regime was put in
place to increase internet penetration across the country. The growth of IP telephony or grey
market is also a serious concern.
Government loses revenue, while unlicensed operation by certain operators violates the law
and depletes licensed operators market share. New services like IP-TV and IP-Telephony are
becoming popular with the demand likely to increase in coming years. The scope of services
under existing ISP license conditions is unclear.
