Introduction to Summer Camp 2020 Virtual Field Trip Projects The best strategy for uncertain times is to restore a sense of certainty. We know the current situation has changed normal procedures and planning for Summer Camp, and much of it will continue through the season. The constraints of the COVID-19 situation have made gathering in public for field trips either unsafe or simply not possible. Because of this, the Kids ‘R’ Kids Support Center Team is creating a Virtual Field Trip and Project Learning program to enhance the Camp experience for 2020. The idea behind this program is that campers will create long-term projects based on virtual resources like field trips and tours. Different themed activities will be scheduled throughout each week over several weeks. This will give your academy the ability to create a sense of stability and anticipation from week to week. Just as was true for the traditional Summer Camp, the key to a quality program that includes virtual experiences is the importance of strong relationships for better outcomes (both child-to- child and teacher-to-child). We are prepared to ensure that the virtual camp activities follow the same guidelines of a quality program that is expected of a Kids ‘R’ Kids camp by doing the following: Intentionally creating activities that promote youth development Keeping activities aligned with strategies to build supportive relationships and skill- building Considering meaningful ways for each child to be safely involved in decision-making and leadership Please see the list of weekly themes that will be included in the VFTPL: Sports Camp Exploring Marine Biology Summer Yearbook Young Scientist Take Flight Engineering Camp Young Artist Camp Babysitters Club Survival Skills Camp Newspaper Camp Etiquette Camp It is difficult to adjust to such a drastic change, but we can keep it in perspective by remembering how exciting it usually is for the children to anticipate going out on adventures, feel independent, and share experiences to make friends. We hope you will find this new program useful for enhancing your program!

Project/Activity Week 1: Camp Lanterns The First week of Summer Camp is here! Make these adorable camp lanterns. Here's how to make charming little hanging lanterns from LED tealights. This is a great fun craft, quick to make and the end result is safe for campers of all ages. Follow the steps below: 1. The 'glass' for the lanterns is made from overhead projector film - although any stiff clear plastic film will work. Cut a rectangle of film 8cm wide and long enough to go all the way around your tealight (with a little to spare - maybe half a centimeter) - so mine was 8 by 14 cm. 2.Using permanent, quick-drying markers, draw a coloured pattern on the film - I went for a sort of stained glass look. (You might need to experiment or shop around a bit to find the sort of pens that will dry properly when used on plastic). 3. Punch a pair of holes in one of the long edges of the film - about one third of the way in from each end (so at about 5 cm along, and another at about 10cm along the long edge). 4. Stick a strip of double-sided foam adhesive tape around the edge of the LED tealight. 5. Peel the backing off the double sided tape and stick the colored film around the candle. 6. Apply it colored side in, so it won't ever smudge - and stick the film in place so as to only use half the width of the adhesive tape (leaving half sticky and exposed). Also make sure you're sticking the opposite edge from the one where you punched holes. 7. Cut some pieces of colored paper or thin cardstock; A circle about 7cm in diameter. A strip about 3cm wide by 14cm long (adjust length to fit with a little overlap, if that's not big enough to go around your tealights).

8. Stand the tealight flat on the work surface and apply the paper strip around the edge. It should stick to the exposed half of the double-sided tape. Stick down the overlapping end of the paper strip with a little clear tape. 9. Cut a slit in the paper disc from the edge straight to the center. Punch a pair of holes - they're not exactly opposite each other when the paper is flat because they need to be opposite after the disc has been made into a cone (see the next step and this will make sense). 10. Overlap the edges of the cut in the paper disc to pull it into a shallow cone shape. Secure this in place with a small piece of clear tape. 11. Cut a length of string or decorative cord about 15cm long - thread the ends down through the conical lid, then in through the two holes in the top edge of the coloured film. Tie the ends together in a double knot. 12. And the lantern is finished - switch on the tealight and enjoy! http://www.atomicshrimp.com/st/content/led_lanterns

THURSDAY Junior Project/Activity #1: Learn your new friend’s names by doing this cool science project together!

Crystal Names!

Materials: • Pipe cleaners • Fishing line (twine or yarn will work too) • Pencils or wooden skewers • Scissors • Glasses or plastic container (one for each color) • A container large enough to hold your name

(if doing your name as a single piece written in cursive) • Borax • Food Coloring (optional, if you want colored letters you can dye the borax

solution or use colored pipe cleaners) • Liquid measuring cup • Tablespoon • Heat Safe Mixing Bowl

Instructions: https://www.playdoughtoplato.com/kids-science-crystal-names/#_a5y_p=3154354 The Science Behind It: When borax is dissolved in water a suspension is created. A suspension is a mixture that has solid particles (the borax) that are large enough for sedimentation (settling out). As the borax begins to settle, it starts to crystalize on all the surfaces it encounters – including the pipe cleaner letters. As the borax continues to settle out, it builds crystals on top of other borax crystals creating a thick layer.

Seashell Snack & Play

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite shell activities, a tasty treat with open invitation to play with your food. A great book to read before completing the activity is “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell” by Lucille Colondro.

Ingredients:

Coconut Cream Pudding Chocolate Pudding Cool Whip Blue and Red Food Coloring Graham Crackers Shell Mold Candy & Lollipop Mold/Seashell Directions:

1. Have kids help make the chocolate pudding and the coconut pudding. Scoop a small amount of the coconut pudding into its own container and add a couple drops of red food coloring to make the pink seashells.

2. Before you place the containers of pudding in the fridge to set, fill the seashell candy mold with pudding. Use a funnel to make pouring a little easier and less messy. Then, place the mold in the freezer to have frozen seashells for your treat. 3. Place a few graham crackers in a ziploc bag and let kids crush them up. If you want, leave some whole so the kids can scoop the pudding. 4. Add a couple drops of blue food coloring to some cool whip to make the “ocean water.” 5.Once the pudding shells are frozen, take them out of the freezer and let them sit for a few minutes. They should melt just enough to come out of mold easily. Have kids help arrange all the ingredients on a tray (or in individual snack cups) to make their own sandy beach summer snack.
