From the President’s Desk.
Hello Everyone,
Wow, we are nearly at the end of January. Where did that go??? I so hope you all had a wonderful relaxing and energizing break
over the Xmas /New Year and there was lots of laughter, bountiful food ( yes, I am now paying for that wee splurge!!), family and
friends aplenty and also some quieter periods for that much needed down time we all yearn for during the year.
Your Inner Wheel committee team met the other night for the first time this year and after the usual catch up we got down to the
business of ensuring this year continues to provide you with the fellowship and fun we all enjoy in our club.
We are kicking off the year with a visit to the Lignite Pit scenic gardens and café. This is such an interesting place to visit. The
lignite mine has been transformed into an environmental award-winning lakeside garden park that features historical points of
interest. We will be given a talk on its history, a dessert supper will be served, and we are free to wander the gardens at our
leisure. They also offer a motorized tour for those of us who cannot get around quite so easily now. I am praying for fine weather!!
To save on the cost of hiring a bus we are all going to meet at Feldwick Gates (Queens Gardens) and car share. The cost of this
evening will be more expensive than usual of course due to the venue and supper they are providing but I am sure it will be well
worth it. I look forward to seeing you all there and catching up on all the holiday news
Our much enjoyed Past Presidents night has been set for Monday, March 14th
and Past President Annette Little has something
really special in the planning stages (it’s a state secret at the moment and I may be killed if I divulge further!!). All I can say is that it
will be a night not to be missed!!!!
On Monday 11thApril, we have invited Adair Polson-Genge to share with us her experience and knowledge in “Digging up the
Rellies” as she has entitled it. Adair has amazing knowledge on how we can research and find out about who were the black sheep
in our families, who has royalty in their ancestry, or how Great Great Great Grandad lost the family fortune and fathered several
offspring you never knew existed!!!!
So as you can see we have been busy. We are also currently exploring the purchase of some more Rotary Emergency Response
kits. These natural disasters just keep on coming don’t they and if we can help in some small way to make it easier for some
families then we should!! You just never know when it could be our turn. Scary thought! Lynda and Graham Dick have very, very,
generously offered us a cattle beast they are currently growing on their farm as a fundraiser. It has been decided by the
committee to raffle this off offering half a beast as first prize and 2nd
and 3rd
prizes will be what remains. This is such a wonderful
opportunity we have been given, to raise a substantial amount and we will be asking members to help us sell as many as we
possibly can, which will in turn hopefully buy several of these kits. We will keep you posted. The raffle card will available for
distribution next month.
FEBRUARY 2011
The other pieces of news are at District and National level. The District Assembly is to be held here in Invercargill on Saturday 2nd
April and I have booked Lindisfarne Community Centre for this. Notices will be going out to all the Districts clubs next week asking
for names of those who will be attending this training day, my first as Incoming District Chairperson. Dorothy Booth, our National
President is flying down from Palmerston North to support me and I am hosting her at our home for the weekend. I will be
contacting you all next month re. how we cater for this day, but I am a great exponent of keeping it simple, I promise!
I am off to Christchurch on the 4th
March for my first National Council meeting as an observer and hopefully I might learn
something of what I have to do!!!!!
Whew, I just know there is more to tell you but I think Dot will have enough trouble trying to fit all this blurb in without me rattling
on further. So until we catch up in February, look after yourselves.
Fond Regards,
Jan
Dot likes orange, Lynda likes yellow, Trish likes red, Rosemary likes blue or orange?
Answer to last month’s Brain Teaser - The Answer was 9, 6 AND 2. The neighbour borrowed an extra cow, to make the
total number of cows 18. Then the oldest son got 1/2 of 18 is 9 cows, the middle son got 1/3 of 18 is 6 cows, and the
youngest son got 1/9 of 18 is 2 cows. Since 9+6+2 = 17, the cows could be divided among the three brothers in such a way
that the borrowed cow was left over, and could be returned to its owner.
