1 PWDSS* Dust suppression system for CQ1-CQ2 berth
&it’s back up area in one side and plots in
other side.
Within 100m radius
from the stockpile
*Plain water dust suppression system
B. Coverage:
Sl. No. Stockpile Dimension
1 Length : 700 m
Width : 70 m
Height : 15m
Qty.: 2nos i.e. CQ1-CQ2 berth &it’s back up area in one side and siding plots in
other side. Full circle sprinklers are to be positioned in center.
C. System concept envisagedand Design Consideration
1. The intended Mechanized Water Sprinkling System will be having sump (vat) and pre-
fabricatedpump house with control roomfor operation of system. Sump and pump house
will be located within 100meters from the plot.
2. Water Requirement:
There is water requirement of 2809 cum per day for the intended system considering 20
hr operation per day. It is planned to source the water by making bore well in the vicinity
of location of the system. In general water from bore-well is slightly saline in nature.
Accordingly total system shall be designed to suit this type of quality of water.
3. Selection of sprinklers:
The throw of sprinkler shall cover width of the plot considering wind velocity.Hence, for
the purpose, radius of throw is considered 75meter.
Minimum capacity of Sprinkler:159 m3/hr (approximate)
Minimum Throw Radius: 75 m
Minimum Tip Pressure: 6.0 kg/cm2
Qty : 14 Nos.
Distance between 2 sprinklers: 50 meter (Approx.)
Make :Sime / Nelson/equivalent
4. Each sprinkler is connected to main header pipeline through Globe Valve & Control
valve. The sprinklers shall be operated automatically and sequentially through PLC. The
surface of stockpiles will bewetted by operating one (1) sprinkler at a time for this
stockpile.
5. There shall be 14 sprinklers to be installed in total. Out of that one sprinkler shall be
operating at a time. Inone hr. cycle each sprinkler shall run for 3.7min approximately. So
sprinkler will run one after another.
6. Water qty. required for dust suppression system when 1 sprinkler is working at a time and
each sprinkler ishaving capacity (159 X1) m3/hr =159.0 m3/hr
i.e. Total consumption = 159.0 m3/hr
Considering @10% margin total consumption = 175.0 m3/hr
Considering Pump capacity is 175m3/hr (1W+1S)
7. Evaporation rate = 1.3 lit/hr/m2.
Selected Sprinkler’s Capacity = 159 m3/hr.
So that sprinkler to be run ≈ 53 min for wetting the stockpile
Qty. of Sprinklers = 14 Nos.
So, eachsprinkler will be run for = 3.7 min.
Therefore one sprinkler will run for 3.7min after that another will run with overlapping of
10 sec and so on sequentially. This operationwill continue for 53min in an hour which is
a cycle time.
i.e. cycle time = 1 hr. = 60 min.
Sprinklers ON time = 53 min.
Sprinkler OFF / Pause time = 7 min.

ON Time =33min OFF
Time

Cycle Time = 60min (1hr)
Considering 20hr / day will be the operation time of dust suppression system.
i.e. total cycle time = 20 hr. / Day
Sprinklers ON time per day = 53min per hr. * 20 min = 1060 min.
Water consumption / Day = (159*1060/60) m3 = 2809 m3.
The pause time can also be controlled by adjusting the time sequence in the sequential
controller so thatwater consumption rate can be controlled as per site condition.
8. Lay out of Pipelines and valves arrangement:
Configuration of pipes and valves is considered as under.
a) There will be a continuous main header line (overhead &underground) of size
150NB.
b) Sprinklers are to be installed at an interval of 50meters (approximately). For this
purpose, risers of size 100NB pipe will be tapped from main header line.
c) The main overhead header line will be placed / laid along the retaining wall with
suitable base arrangement towards road side. Since retaining walls are not continuous
and there are 6 openings, the pipes shall be laid inside culvert existing in the openings
with suitable base arrangement. Height of retaining wall is 1.4 meter from road level.
Height of the sprinkler shall be decided considering to reach the stack height of
15meter so also width of 70meter.The riser stating from tapping point will be
positioned vertical by means of structural support. Accordingly, suitable section of
steel structural shall be selected to hold the riser firmly without any vibration of
sprinkler in operation. The support structures shall be anchored with the existing
retaining wall with grouting chemicals for proper rigidity. All the structural to be used
in system shall be galvanized and painted.
14th
no of sprinkler may be come on ground where there will be no retaining wall.
Hence, header line needs to be placed underground. For laying of pipe underground it
shall be at a depth of 1.5 meter from ground level. The bed of 300mm depth after
1.5meter from ground level comprising 225mm earth filling and 75mm sand filling
with proper compaction shall be prepared for placing &laying of pipeline. This
sprinkler and riser shall be placed in a retaining wall to be constructed new of
appropriate thickness (minimum 400mm overground) with proper supporting
structure.
9. VAT:
The location of the VAT will be located within a100m radius from the stockpile area and
to be made up of concrete structure having dimension as mentioned in Annexure-1 (3
Sheets).
10. Pump House:
Pump house has been considered within 100m radius from the stockpileadjacent to
VAT.The intended dust suppression system will be operatedfrom the control room in
Pump House. The pump house shall be connected to the VAT. The pump house shall be
constructed using pre-fab structures.Dimension of pump house as shown in drawings is a
tentative dimension for reference and dimension shall be freezed considering installation
of all equipment and its accessories.
Required no. of Pumps, MCCs, PLC panels will be installed in the pump house.
Necessary Gate valves, Globe valves, Pressure release valves, Non-return valves,
Pressure gauges, Pressure switches will be provided for each pumping unit. Strainer will
be provided at suction line in the pump inlet. Bypass arrangement with Pressure release
valve & Gate valve is considered in the discharge line to prevent the pump running at
shut-off head. A level switch is considered for Sump to avoid dry run of pump.Water will
re-circulate to the water sump from header line through by pass line when there is no
demand of water.
11. Operation of Pumps:
2 centrifugal pumps are required for smooth operation of the DSS system. Both the
pumps shall be operated in regular interval one after another.
12. Electrical System:
The connected load for total system is worked out to be 170 KW. LT MCC, PLC panel,
