A word fromIPSF

For those who have never been to IPSF’s World Congress, it is an unforgettable event that speaks to the global friendship, professionalism, collaboration, and advancement of pharmacy practice that all the dynamic participants from the world bring together.

World Congress is IPSF’s premier event each year, attracting pharmacy students and recent graduates from all around the world to share the latest trends in pharmacy education, scientific development, professional initiatives and global policy. Our pharmacy education and scientific symposium each year attract distinguished guests who are experts and leaders in their respective fields. We also have student lead initiatives, such as public health campaigns, and patient counselling events that provide wonderful opportunities for participants to challenge themselves and enjoy.

Furthermore, complementing these professional activities, World Congress also provides an intimate setting for all to share each other heritage and taste the local culture in our social activities, such as “International Night”, “Traditional Night”, and so much more. Often, friends that you make in World Congress will last for a lifetime.

In this newsletter, you will find the details about the events and programmes that will be offered in the 59th IPSF World Congress in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The Reception Committee and the IPSF team are working very hard to make it a success, which you will get a taste in this newsletter, and newsletters to come.

From the bottom of my heart, I welcome you all to come and experience what is IPSF. I look forward to seeing you this coming year in Utrecht, The Netherlands, for the 59th World Congress!

Greetings to all of our dear IPSF members and friends from around the world!

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the International Pharmaceu-tical Students’ Federation (IPSF), I would like to offer you our warmest greeting and wishes from the four corners of the world. Being elected as the President of IPSF, during the past 58th IPSF World Congress in Hurghada, Egypt, has been a humbling and exciting opportunity to meet and represent pharmacy students from around the world.

The first congress that I participated was the 56th IPSF World Congress in Slovenia, and subsequently the 57th World Congress and Leaders in Training in Hat Yai, Thailand, and then the 58th World Congress in Egypt.

make their own decisions and help them gain vital experience and skills to lead them on the path to their future. Therefore we are happy to support the organisation of this event. We would like to encourage all of you to visit our lovely country and we are proud to be able to welcome pharmaceutical students from all over the world at our university in the heart of the Netherlands.

With the IPSF World Congress taking place at our university, we would like to take this opportunity to show you the possibilities we offer you as a pharmaceutical student or recent graduate. All Master’s and PhD programmes within our Graduate School of Life Sciences are linked to renowned research areas and combine the expertise and facilities of the Faculties of Science (including pharmacy) and Social & Behavioural Sciences, with the fundamental and clinical research and education of the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. This combination is unique in the Netherlands and has gained a strong international reputation in biomedical and life sciences research.

Utrecht University has developed into one of Europe’s largest and most prominent institutes of research and education which liaises with universities all over the world. The benefits of this international environment are reflected in its education and research. From that point of view Utrecht University is a perfect location for the IPSF World Congress 2013. Next to that, the university has all the facilities to host the event and the historic city of Utrecht will serve as the perfect backdrop for your congress’ associate events.

We are proud that pharmaceutical students from the Netherlands are organising this event and are confident that the 59th IPSF World Congress will be a great success. We welcome you all in the summer of 2013.

Following the

CentennialFIP

I am convinced that the Royal Dutch Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (KNPSV) will put together a congress that is professionally rewarding and a social programme aimed at making your stay in the Netherlands thoroughly enjoyable.

The Netherlands is a small nation. Consequently, an international outlook and openness is firmly ingrained in the Dutch culture. Dutch pharmacists and pharmacy students, too, have always valued contacts with their counterparts from other countries. FIP was founded here in 1912 and in 1949 the KNPSV was one of the founding members of the IPSF.

Since those days, the pharmacy profession has changed tremendously. In the Netherlands, pharmacists have out-lined their ambitions in a White Paper on Pharmacy. The patient is our main concern and there is increasing emphasis on medication safety, cooperation with other healthcare professionals, the accurate transfer of medication-related information and on medication adherence (patient compliance).

There is a growing awareness among healthcare officials that making better use of the expertise of pharmacists will yield substantial health gains. For patients as well as in terms of healthcare costs containment. A recently published IMS Health report mentions that worldwide a staggering 500 billion dollars could be avoided if the right medicine comes to the right patient and patients adhere to the prescribed medication.

Pharmacists discussed these developments at the FIP Centennial Congress. It is important that you, as future phar-macists, also discuss these matters at the upcoming IPSF conference.

The world needs a new kind of pharmacist.

Summer 2013 in Utrecht is something to look forward to.

Jan Smits, pharmacistPresidentRoyal Dutch Pharmaceutical Association

Jan SmitsKNMP President

In 2012 pharmacists from all over the world came to the Netherlands for the 100th congress of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). Next year, pharmacy students from around the globe will be coming this way for the IPSF World Congress 2013. Dutch pharmacists and pharmacy students are proud and delighted that the Netherlands was chosen as the host country for these important, international congresses.

The historical city of Utrecht, situated in the very heart of the Nether-lands, with a vibrant, old-world city centre and world class university and pharmacy faculty, is the perfect venue for the IPSF World Congress.

The Netherlands is best known for its tulips, wind-mills and clogs, as well as its low altitude and vulnerability to flooding. Less well known is that the Dutch have won Nobel prizes for chemistry, physics, medicine, economics and peace or that the world’s planners and architects flock here to learn about Dutch solutions for this crowded country. And did you know that the Netherlands has the sixteenth largest economy in the world?

PAGE 12

Did you know that:• “the Netherlands” and “Holland” are used to describe the same country?• one quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level?• the Netherlands has approximately 480 inhabitants per square kilometre?• with only 0.008% of the world’s area, the Netherlands is the world’s third largest

agricultural exporter?• the Netherlands was one of the European Union’s founding nations?• the Netherlands has at least 15,000 km of cycle tracks?• the Netherlands still has about 1,000 traditional working windmills?• the Dutch are the tallest people in Europe?• Amsterdam is entirely built on piles?• almost every Dutch person has a bicycle and there are twice as many bikes as

cars?

Utrecht is the lively, beating heart of Holland. It was built around the Dom tower, which you can see from any point in the city, so there is no way you can get lost in the attractive, car-free city centre. Utrecht boasts beautiful canals with extraordinary wharfs, cellars, housing, cafés and terraces by the water. As well as the Dom tower, Utrecht boasts hundreds of other monuments that each contribute to the special atmosphere in this centuries-old university town.

The Netherlands is quite small. The greatest distance from north to south is 300 km and from west to east 200 km. Despite this we have a population of sixteen and a half million! Dutch is the national language of the Netherlands. However, English is spoken by almost everyone. In addition, many Dutch people speak German and French.

The Netherlands is a con-stitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system, and its government consists of the Queen and ministers. For historical reasons the government and parliament are in The Hague, although Am-sterdam is in fact the capital.

Did you know that:• the Netherlands’ highest point is 323 metres high and is therefore called a “

mountain”?• you’ll find a bunch of flowers in almost every Dutch living room?• when your plane arrives at Schiphol, it lands 4.5 metres below sea level?• Amsterdam has 1,281 bridges?

SYMPOSIAAs you might have heard, the themes of the symposia of the 59th IPSF World Congress were elected during the previous IPSF World Congress in Egypt.

Therefore we are very glad to inform you the themes for the Scientific Symposium and the theme for the Educational Symposium.

Right after the congress in Egypt, the search for the best lecturers started and we are doing our utmost best to have a great programme for the symposium days next year!

During the Scientific Symposium we hope to illustrate the use of genomics and biomarkers in drug development and pharmaceutical care. Next to that we will try to enlighten you in the use of pharmacokinetic and pharmaco- dynamic modelling for specific populations, like children or the elderly. Furthermore, we will discuss the appli-cation of personalised medicine in the pharmacy.

Scientific Symposium: ‘Personalised Medicine’

Educational Symposium:‘Developing Pharmaceutical Care

through Collaborative Practice’ The Educational Symposium will be an interesting and interactive day on which we will learn how to improve pharmaceutical care all over the world by using collaboration with pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare professionals we will have to cooperate with in our future career. Top pharmacists will share their experiences of how they have proven their beneficial role in collaborative health care practice and how this has developed pharmaceutical care.

RAMADAN AND THE

IPSF WORLD CONGRESSAs-salamu alaykum مكيلع مالسلا

In 2013 the Muslim fasting period Ramadan will start on the 9th of July and probably last until the 7th of August. This means that it will take place dur-ing the congress. Of course we are taking this into account! Therefore we will provide the necessary facilities for those who wish to partake in the Ra-madan.

While registering for our congress you can indicate whether you want your meals before sunrise and after sunset. Furthermore we will have separate rooms and bathrooms for males and females. We will try to arrange special Halal food for Islamic students during the congress. At least we will take all dietary requirements into consideration.

To celebrate the coincidence of the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar and our congress we will

devote a special theme evening to the Ramadan at its last night. At this evening all participants of the congress can get familiar with this Islamic tradition to improve mutual understanding. The next morning will probably be the start of the Eid-al-Fitr. At this morning there will be extra time for the special prayer, before starting the last day of the congress.

The upcoming year the reception committee will work on the exact content of the Ramadan evening and the Eid morning. We aim to work together with the Islamic community in Utrecht: about 15% of the 300.000 inhabitants of Utrecht are Muslims so the Ramadan is not an unknown phenomenon! We hope that despite the coin-cidence of the IPSF World Congress, Ramadan and the start of the Sugar Feast many Islamic pharmacy students are willing to come to our congress and enjoy our wonderful event!

JOIN THE LEADERS IN TRAININGPROGRAMME BEFORE THE CONGRESS!

What is Leaders In Training?

Leaders In Training (LIT) is an interactive programme that primarily aims to train pharmacy students who are interested in taking up leadership roles at the local, national or international levels to become better leaders and imbue them with certain standard of leadership, stewardship skills and knowledge year af-ter year.

History of LIT.

Five years ago, the leaders of IPSF looked at how to nurture quality leadership teams year after year and to carry over the hardworking spirit that is needed to maintain such a large organization like IPSF. The idea for LIT was inspired by other external student organizations, who over the years have come to adopt training programmes to develop their leadership teams. The first inaugural LIT was held in 2008 in the 54th

IPSF World Congress in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Since then it has been every year prior to IPSF World Congresses and Regional Symposia.

How does LIT work?

Each year, we select about 20 candidates who submit their motivations and applica-tions on why they want to attend LIT, and their interest in taking on leadership roles in IPSF. The candidates then come together in an intimate setting that last for about 4 days where they share, listen, participate and discuss leadership topics during day-

2012-2013

time workshops, but also enjoy social actives at nighttimes. After these 4 days of workshops, the participants will get to put the theories they learned into practice by organising their own projects and workshop during the congress. What does LIT mean to IPSF?

Speaking as a past LIT graduate and as a trainer,

PAGE 21

I want to share with you a personal story of why I felt so motivated to work for IPSF and fondly of LIT. During one of IPSF’s executive committee meetings at our accom-modation, we, as a team, were working hard late into the night. From our discussion, we veered into the subject of leadership style, most specifically “servant leadership”, which you might guess is one of the topics we discussed during LIT. It was just so wonderful to hear from my fellow teammates, who were past LIT graduates them-selves, saying that the purpose as executives is to work hard for our members. This is the essence of LIT. In the last five years, the executive committee members of IPSF have drawn heavily from LIT graduates, and I in my opinion, in the vision of those who founded LIT, it has made IPSF stronger.

FIVE YEARS OF LEADERSHIP IN TRAINING, AND THE FUTURE THAT AWAITS

What does LIT mean to you?

If you aspire to lead and be a servant leader, LIT is a good programme for you to gain the “hardware”, organisation and technical skills, and also the “software”, social skills and understanding the working culture of IPSF. Overall, it was a fun and rewarding experience for me, and I hope that it will be for you.

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say “I.” And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say “I.” They don’t think “I.” They think “we”; they think

“team.” They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibil-ity and don’t sidestep it, but “we” gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables

you to get the task done.

- Peter Drucker

Application for LIT

The application for LIT will be finalized early 2013, we will keep you all updated via the congress’ web-page, the IPSF webpage (www.ipsf.org), the IPSF blog (blog.ipsf.org) and also our Facebook page.

SOCIALPROGRAMME

During the congress there will be a great social programme:

The congress starts with an opening ceremony in one of the oldest churches of Utrecht where you will meet the other participants. After the ceremony you can converse with each other while having a drink and appetizer.

Besides the educative part of the programme you can join some awesome theme parties and of course the auction and international evening. Are you already excited about the excursion day? Check out the upcoming newsletter next year! One of the last days will be dedicated to the end of the Ramadan, where we are going to celebrate the Eid-al-Fitr.

The congress ends with a closing gala dinner and afterwards you may dance and drink until the late hours at this spectacular evening!
