Definition: Social Responsibility

Responsibility of an organization for the im pacts of its decisions andactivities on society and the environm ent, through transparent andethical behaviour that

– is consistent with sustainable developm ent and the welfare ofsociety;

– takes into account the expectations of stakeholders;

– is in com pliance with applicable law and consistent withinternational norm s of behaviour; and

– is integrated throughout the organization.

On the content of ISO 26000, the workshop participants:– Highlight the generally weaker levels of government in the region, and

draw attention to the following aspects:• This has significant implications for the nature of the SR activities of the private

sector, NGOs and other organisations in the region• There is much that Northern organisations can learn from the SR activities of

African organisations arising from these challenges they face and the nature oftheir responses to these challenges

• It is suggested that specific provision needs to be made in Clause 4 for theimplications that this issue has on the concept of SR

• It is suggested that more explicit provision needs to be made within ISO 26000for the specific implications of SR for government - an an organisation that issubject to the same expectations on SR, and as regards its particularresponsibility in giving effect to SR in policy and regulation
