ISO 26000.WD3 - Some key issues for consideration (1/3)
– Length / density of the document• How to maximise the value of this document for all organisations?• What scope for restructuring of the document (e.g. issue-annexes?)• Process elements re drafting - a need for a more integrated approach?
– Nature of the guidance / fundamental expectations• What level of detail to provide? (currently many prescriptive lists)
– Ensuring guidance standard is applicable to all organisations• Concern by many that this focuses mainly on large business organisations
– Making appropriate provision for SR and the role of government• Government as an organisation and government as policy maker on SR issues

ISO 26000.WD3 - Some key issues for consideration (2/3)
– Agreeing the definition of stakeholder and stakeholder engagement• Some underlying conceptual differences that need to be addressed
– Addressing Clause 5 (Principles) and its relationship with Clause 6• Should we retain a separate clause or integrate all principles into Clause 6?
– Organisational governance - retain in Clause 5 or treat as “principles”?• Specific note on scope of standard and fact that must not be for certification
– The relationship and ordering between Clause 6 and Clause 7• Some have suggested moving Clause 7 before Clause 6
– References to other instruments relevant to social responsibility• Thoughts re reference to e.g. GRI and related initiatives

ISO 26000.WD3 - Some key issues for consideration (2/3)
– Nature of the advice in Clause 7 (Implementation)• Concern that still too much like an MSS• How to ensure a closer link with the Clause 6 issues (and SR more generally)?
– Reference to the term ‘supply chain’• Scope to use value chain or “sphere of influence”
– International norms of behaviour• What is covered within this definition?
– Testing the application of the standard• Is there scope for a “beta-testing” of the standard

The challenge of ensuringthe relevance of ISO 26000
to the very differentcircum stances of different
parts of the world.

On the content of ISO 26000, the workshop participants:– Highlight the generally weaker levels of government in the region, and
draw attention to the following aspects:• This has significant implications for the nature of the SR activities of the private
sector, NGOs and other organisations in the region• There is much that Northern organisations can learn from the SR activities of
African organisations arising from these challenges they face and the nature oftheir responses to these challenges
• It is suggested that specific provision needs to be made in Clause 4 for theimplications that this issue has on the concept of SR
• It is suggested that more explicit provision needs to be made within ISO 26000for the specific implications of SR for government - an an organisation that issubject to the same expectations on SR, and as regards its particularresponsibility in giving effect to SR in policy and regulation

m easures• Prom oting product stewardsh ip and life cycle issues so as to m inim ise developing country
im pacts• Prom oting the effective application of fair operating and trade practices in the developing
