advice from the office of Dr. gadi avshalomov M.D.

Do you su f fer f rom nasa l congest ion sneezing or sinus infect ions? Does spr ing br ing abou t t he fami l ia r i tchy eyes, or wheeze? Do you f ind t ha t your t h roat feels sore a lot dur ing those br ight spr ing mornings? I f so, you could be suf fer ing f rom pollen al lergies. Pollen al lergies are of ten the cause of a lot of headaches, itchy eyes, wheezing, and coughing. Dur ing the spr ing, the source of a l lergens is usual ly g ra s s and t ree po l l en—f loa t ing r igh t outside your window. Pollen may be seen as a green-yellow coat ing on almost any thing outdoors, the spr ing pol len season star ts in late March and goes into ear ly July.

Spring allergensJust as winter comes to an end and the

snow star ts to melt the gears of the spr ing al lergy season are set into mot ion. This abundance of water in early March will feed both the outdoor molds and the swell ing buds on the t rees, by ear ly Apr i l dayl ight wil l be long enough to st imulate growth in the t rees and wake them from their winter hibernat ion. The f irst growth of t rees and grasses are the buds, these are the buds that throw of f pol len into the air. Most buds open af ter dusk and close at dawn; th is is why people w i th pol len a l lerg ies should never s leep wi th open windows. A l though the pol len season star ts in Apr i l i t cont inues to build on i tsel f unt i l i t peaks in late may or ear ly June, when the buds dye of heat or lack of ra in.

Peop le t h i nk t ha t hav ing sea sona l al lergies is “normal”. One may frequent ly hear people say “all I get is some sneeze or cough and itchy eyes for a few weeks”. What most people don’t real ize is that lurk ing beneath those few common symptoms is a very complex immune react ion, which may result in sinusit is, eczema and even asthma in a few years. Unfor tunately many patients dread the beginning of spr ingt ime. Spr ing

consistent ly rates as the most dif f icult t ime for a l lergic pat ients.

How can you tel l i f you’re a v ic t im of spr ing a l lergies? I f you not ice that your symptoms tend to occur suddenly as the season changes ever y year. I f you’re the one who is wheezing through Easter or that Passover sinus infect ion never passes you over, then you probably have spr ingt ime al lergies. I f you get that famil iar i tch in t he corner of your eyes ever y Apr i l or May then you most def ini tely have pollen a l lergies. I tchy red eyes are one of the most character is t ic symptoms of spr ing

al lergies; the reason for this is that t ree pol len is ver y i r r i t a t ing to the l in ing of our eyes causing a l lergic conjunct iv i t is. A l le rg ic con junc t i v i t i s i s ver y common amongst a l lergic pat ients and at t imes i t can be ver y annoying, resul t ing in eyes swell ing shut or even permanent changes in vision (keratoconus). Although itchy eyes are the most common al lergic symptom su f fered dur ing the spr ing, i t cer t a in l y isn’t the most severe, di f f icul t y breathing and shor tness of breath (A llergic Asthma) however can become ver y severe, maybe even l i fe t hreaten ing. A l le rg ic As thma a f fec t mi l l ions of peop le ever y spr ing in the Uni ted States and i t s preva lence

seems to be on the r ise. Many people that su f fer f rom a l le rg ic As thma in the spr ing f requent ly suf fer f rom Asthma at other t imes of the year; so good cont rol of their Asthma year round t ranslates to easier breathing in the spr ing.

I f this sounds l ike you, there are some things that you can do.

tips for surviving allergy season

• Find out what are you actually allergic to, i.e. Tree pollen, grass pol len, mold…

• If you are allergic to pollen close your w indows through the pol len season. I f you must open them then only between sunr ise and sunset.

• Limit your outdoor exposure and when you enter your house change your clothes.

Take your showers a t n ight t h is w i l l prevent the pol len in your sk in and hair f rom accumulat ing in your bed.

I f medicat ion don’t help much ask your doctor i f a l lergy shots are r ight for you.

This may seem like a lot of work just for a stuf f y nose or i tchy eyes, but a l lergies should not be taken l ight ly. Not only are they uncomfor table, they can lead to many more ser ious problems like recurrent sinus infect ions — which unt reated, can lead to other compl icat ions — and ser ious, asthma at tacks.

In the end its safe to say that even people wi th pol len al lergies can salvage some of those beaut i ful spr ing days, but i t takes some planning and ef for t. So take your a l lergy medicine, run your a ir f i l ters and t r y to make the best of i t, because before you can bl ink those swollen i tchy eyel ids i t wi l l be fa l l.

Ireland has i t ’s pubs. France has i t ’s cafes. Spain has it’s Tapas bars. Benson-hurst has it’s John’s Deli. Huh? Yes, the borough of Kings is home to the reign-

ing heavyweight champion in the highly competit ive delicatessen business. This perennial eatery is the champ, and it looks l ike retirement is not around the corner.

To say John’s Del i is a genealogica l m i rac le a f f a i r i s an under s t a tement . The family run local landmark has been churning out mouth water ing food since 1968. With an emphasis on “no nonsense” t a s t e , j u s t c u l i n a r y per fect ion, this St i l lwell Avenue s t a lwar t never misses. I f unbelievably au t hen t ic I t a l i an food i s wha t you c r ave...run...don’t walk to this maceller ia.

A f t e r be ing i n t he community for 45 years, the owners, the Cicero f ami l y, a re ove r joyed b y t h e i r c onne c t i o n to t he ne ighborhood. “I t ’s so nice to be here and to see eve r yone come in and out,” said s on Robe r t , “ To be pa r t o f Bensonhu r s t is a badge I wear wi th p r ide. We l l, Rober t , t h e r e i s s o m e t h i n g e l s e you s hou l d be boas t ing abou t . You r cuis ine! When walk ing into this shr ine to gastronomic goodness ones eyes s t ra in w i th p leasure as you gaze over the plethora of hot and cold possibilit ies. Salami, Prosciut to, Capicola, Bresaola, Mor tadel la and the l is t keeps on going. Aged cheeses that def ine the word “savor y”. Oh! Let ’s not forget the authent ic hot stuf f. Listen to these tast y

t reats. John’s wor ld renowned Eggplant Parmigiano has been satisfying bellies and making locals swoon for years. But I think you should a lso take a bi te out of this s ignature staple: Hot roast beef, topped wi th f resh mozzare l la, grat i f y ing gravy and onions over a veritable operat ic hero. Both of fer ings are absolutely audacious.

Loyal customers always stop by John’s Del i, and let Cicero know what a great place i t is.

“The sandwiches are great I have been coming here for over for ty years,” Said Phil

f rom 18th Ave “there’s nothing bet ter”. Debra f rom Pi tk in Ave. had to bestow a l i t t le enthusiast ic grat i tude as well. “I go in at around six in the morning when they open and I grab my cof fee. It ’s so nice to come into an old school family business before work...I t a lways gives me a boost right before I have to face the nightmare of

the subway.” When told of this Bob Cicero was very moved. “That ’s what we are, an authent ic I ta l ian place r ight here in the hear t of Bensonhurst. I have ever ybody f rom the police to f iremen to the people at Ver izon coming by. I could of sworn I saw Ralph Kramden the other day. And my father John (or iginal owner) comes by everyday and helps out everyday too. We wouldn’t have i t any other way.”

Luck i l y I was w i th in earshot when I heard what they were cooking up nex t. Sici l ian r ice bal ls wi th meat and sauce...

sounds awesome? I thought so too. I’m going to hurr y this up so I can race down and try some gourmandizing grub because I can’t wai t to s ink my teeth into some down home I t a l ian food. As Ph i l sa id ear l ier...Food l ike this...“there’s nothing bet ter”. Thank you Cicero family f rom al l of us to a l l of you.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. It is safe to say you can improve on perfect ion, however. One local bakery is proof that you

can always move forward to new heights without ever forgett ing the past or what got you there.

75 delicious yearsCuccio’s bakery has been

around since 1937. To say i t is a neighborhood landmark is an understatement. The past r y par lor is celebrat ing 75 yea rs in t he bus iness o f c oncoc t i n g de l i c i o u s delectables along with some absolu te ly mouth water ing breads. Cuccio’s is a th ird gene ra t i on l abo r o f l ove and i t s owner John Cuccio, (who incidentally to his credit was an Emergency Medical Technic ian for eight years) could not be any prouder. “I t has been great being par t of this communit y”, he gushed ”When you have generat ions of cus tomers coming in over t he years i t makes you so proud, and puts a smi le on your face”.

into the FutureThe tast y haven has gone through an

ex tensive remodeling. As Cuccio puts i t, “to br ing the place into the 21st centur y, without surrendering it ’s old world charm.” The shop wil l a lways turn out a ful l l ine of breads, past r ies and of course their world famous jelly and cream doughnuts. In addit ion to gastronomic Italian staples like

spumoni and rainbow cookies, the baking haven is a lso of fe r ing French pas t r ies l ike ecla irs and croissants. “We want to be more in ternat iona l” says the proud owner. To keep up wi th the compet i t ion the bak ing mecca is exper iment ing wi th an ever growing range of signature cakes. “We have been t r y ing out var ious recipes and designs so that we can make what ever cake a customer wants without having

i t break the bank”. Cuccio goes on to emphasize that wedding cakes are another specialty. “Wedding season i s u pon u s ”, c h uc k l e s Cuccio, “We can produce a cake that is made to your own speci f icat ions and we gua r a n t e e you r gue s t s won’t be disappointed; in fact they wil l probably ask you for the recipe”.

Heart & Soul of the Community

Locals love to savor a l l of the baker ies scrumpt ious of fer ings and can’t get over how f r iendly and old-school the place is. “It ’s great that with all the fancy-schmancy s tu f f popping up a l l over the c i t y” one cus tomer sa id, “we have a rea l p lace that never le t ’s us forget the pas t and st i l l provides a great doughnut at a great pr ice. We can’t let these places ever leave us. They are our her i tage.” Another loyal customer, Frank from Tot tenville, exclaims “my grand k ids jus t love i t he re, bu t shhhhhhhhh don’t tell my daughter because she wil l now know I am spoil ing them. But hey, what else does a grandfather do”?

I do l c i s ono magn i f i c i . I l p ane è assolu t amente merav ig l ioso! Non vedo l ’ora di provare i dolc i Cuccio nuov i ... Yum! That is the bat t le cr y at this K ings County mainstay. If you just take a gander at the l ines of people wait ing to buy some pastr ies, i t looks like Cuccio’s is not going anywhere. In fac t expans ion might be something to th ink about so that ever y borough has a cake shop that dispenses sweets so fantast ic i t makes your taste buds want to scream.

The 20-foot by 40-foot or la rger swimming pool has long been the dream of many suburban hom-eowners w i t h a la rge back ya rd

T h e c o c k t a i l o r min i poo l i s grow ing in popular it y because many people—tired of the long commute, pay ing h igh f ue l p r ices or both—want to l i ve c loser to work, bu t do not want to g i ve up t he l i fes t y le t ha t inc ludes a pool and beaut i fu l landscaping. How Big is a Cock tai l pool?

I have o f ten been asked how b ig i s a cock t a i l poo l, compared to t he more t r ad i t i ona l s i zed poo l? I cons ide r any poo l t ha t i s 24 feet o r les s in leng th to

It is clear that there are more and more obstacles that impede the progress New Yorkers. These issues can be very daunting and sensitive be-cause sometimes they involve what is the most

precious commodity of all, family. These sentiments are addressed wholeheartedly by the law partners of Alatsas & Taub. Since its inception, the prominent sixteen-year-old firm has made Brooklyn its home and has seen its share of conflict and uncertainty.

“We are very sensitive and meticulous when it comes to each situation and we use our vast legal knowledge and expertise to assure the best outcome for our clients, both monetarily a n d e m o t i o n a l l y . ” Theodore Alatsas ESQ. states,

The firm specializes in divorce, family law and personal injury cases. As dedicated family men themselves, the partners are very concerned about the client’s best interests because they are well schooled in all aspects of the legal system. Each year there are new laws enacted which can affect the client both directly and indirectly. We take a special interest in the uncertain legal system and prepare a tactical game plan. A strategy that achieves the ultimate goal of winning the right settlement or claim that is best for you.

re you tired of looking for just a regular butcher? Are you getting stymied by long lines at the local gourmet garage? Is i t frustrat-

If you answered yes than there is a certain place you need to know about. This meat lover’s mecca is the leader, hands down, when it comes to proper handling artistry.

Are you tirelessly looking for quality seafood? Did you just get back from down south and wish you could find fresh shellfish closer to

home? Are you tired of driving two hours to New Jersey to sample some mou t h -wa t e r i ng crus taceans? Yes. . .you say...then you are exactly like the owners of a brand new crab house on Hylan Boulevard. Af ter feel ing the same “hunger” pain, this husband and wife duo decided to do something about it. Construction be-gan and a new dest ina-tion restaurant has been created.

Hou s e o f C r a b s i s exac t l y wha t i t c l a ims to be, a, no muss, no fuss, aqua jo in t t hat i s dedicated to ever y th ing with f ins, shells and legs. The Eatery prides itself on every thing crab of fering a smorgasbord of salivat ing samples. Chose from King Crab Legs, Snow Crab Legs, Dungeness Crab and Rock Crab. Or you can dive into a var iet y of other seafood dishes that are both f resh and cooked to per fect ion.

i f it is crab you crave ... it is crab you get

House of Crabs sugges t s you come casua l because th ings can get a l i t t le messy. You wil l be provided wi th a bib, a mallet, a hammer, and all the utensils you wil l need to crush crabs shel ls, ex t r icate the savor y meat and dip i t in to one of House of Crabs delectably infused sauces. Yum! There is a lso a sect ion that is set aside for couples...which is good because

usual ly ( in my exper ience) one of them is a lways crabby. Famil ies and f r iends have a bal l as they pound and smack their way to f resh meat that has been per fected in both hot and spicy boi ls. Ginger scal l ion

sauce sound good to you? I thought so!

love comes from Sharing

Owner Mar ty Blust in and wife Biat ta are exci ted that they could br ing this seafood exper ience to the people of Staten Island. “We l ive here and we always wanted to recreate the t ypical Crab House here in the borough’, said Blust in, “this is a labor of love for both of us, and we just wanted to share our food wi th the communit y”.

Af ter the grand opening, local folks seem to be coming by the droves to feed there crab addiction. “I just got back from Florida last week”, said Steve f rom New Dorp, “I

was missing real ly f resh crab and then I s tumbled onto this place. I went in, sat down, and now I know where to go when I get t he urge. Thanks for recogniz ing what Staten Is land was lack ing and f i l l ing

a need.” A lways bashful, the owners just want locals to come on down to k i l l two crabs wi th one s tone. Diners can bash the crab out of i t ’s integument to take out f rust rat ion, whi le get t ing stuf fed on the l i t t le del ic ious bel lyachers. “I have four boys”, said Ramona f rom Todt Hil l, “this is a godsend...I br ing them down here and they can get ful l, t i red, and make a mess and I don’t have to worr y about i t, or clean up.” Thank you House of Crabs.

So pay a v is i t to The House of Crab. You won’t be disappointed unt i l you get your cleaning bi l l. But hey, any thing this wonder ful will come at a pr ice. Good thing the menu is reasonable so i t ’s not that big a deal.

Meadowlands: Racing at its Best

The Meadowlands Racetrack is a horse rac ing t rack at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States. The track

hosts both thoroughbred racing and harness racing. It is known popularly in the region as “The Big M.”

HistoryOpened in the mid 1970s, Meadowlands

Racet rack held i t s f i rs t-ever harness race on September 1, 1976 while thoroughbred racing commenced on September 6, 1977. With the except ion of the opening season of 1976, autumn has been dedicated to the thoroughbreds, whi le the rest of the year features standardbreds, or harness horses.

T h e a d v e r t i s i n g c a m p a i g n t h a t accompan ied t he s t a r t of t horoughbred rac ing at the Meadowlands in 1977 was h igh l y soph is t i c a ted and we l l- rece i ved, and was ch ief l y noted for i t s use of t he song “Racing Wi th The Moon,” or ig ina l l y

popu l a r i zed i n 1941 by band l e ade r Vaughn Monroe (a l luding to the fact that the racing was to be conducted at night - a c ircumstance that s t i l l per ta ins, a l though af te rnoon programs dur ing long ho l iday weekends are occasional ly put on).

More recent adver t is ing campaigns have included a direct and catchy approach to at tending live racing — “It ’s All About Being Here – The Meadowlands!” With its sweeping cur ves and wide st retches, the “Big M” has been known for exceptional t imes for harness racing. Opening night at the t rack featured the fastest harness mile run in New Jersey to that t ime, 1:55 by Rambling Wil l ie. The wor ld record for a mile by a standardbred, 1:46 by Holborn Hanover, in rein to George Brennan, was establ ished at the t rack on August 5, 2006 in a div is ion of the U.S. Pacing Championship.

The Meadowlands Racet rack has been the s i te of the Hambletonian, the second leg of the Trot t ing Tr iple Crown, since 1981.

The 2010 Hambletonian was won by Muscle Massive, dr iven by Ron Pierce, in a t ime of 1:51.

Leading dr ivers in recent seasons have included Ron Pierce, Br ian Sears, George Brennan, and Tim Tet r ick.

The t rack is operated by the New Jersey Spor ts and Exposi t ion Author i t y, a lso the operator of Monmouth Park.

Sam McKee and Ken Warkent in are the current race callers and announcers for the Meadowlands. Veteran spor tscaster Dave Johnson, the t rack’s lead publ ic-address announcer f rom i ts opening unt i l the ear ly 2000s (decade), s t i l l does promot iona l event s for t he t rack as i t s “sen ior t rack announcer.”

In July 2009, the Meadowlands Rail Line opened for event ser v ice, but is expected to run dai ly upon complet ion of the nearby Amer ican Dream Meadowlands.

The pr ivat izat ion would include $100 million of improvements consist ing of a new 2,250-seat grandstand bui l t on the si te of the current backst retch, which is expected to open by 2013. The exist ing grandstand would then be kept unt il at least 2014 so it could be used as an event space for Super Bowl XLVII I.

physical attributesLike many racecourses in the United States,

the main (dir t) track at the Meadowlands has a 1-mile (1,609 m) circumference; inside of this is a tur f course (used by the thoroughbreds only) which is 7 fur longs (1,408 m). With a span of exact ly 3 ⁄16 miles (302 m) f rom the top of the st retch to the f inish l ine and a dis tance of exact ly 1 ⁄ 16 miles (101 m)

f rom the f inish l ine to the beginning of the f irst (clubhouse) turn, the dimensions of the t rack are considered “t ypical” or “standard” for an Amer ican racet rack. The main t rack is 90 feet (27 m) wide, while the width of the tur f course is 80 feet (24 m).

The track is equipped to race at night and most of i t s races are at night.

The Meadowlands Racet rack, including the main building, horse barns and site, was designed by the Phi ladelphia archi tectura l f irm of EwingCole (now known as Ewing Cole Cherr y Brot t), who also designed a number of other t rack faci l i t ies around the wor ld as well as Ci t izens Bank Park in Phi ladelphia (with Populous). In the middle of the t rack is a lake, intent ional ly to resembling the state of New Jersey.
