The past couple of months have seen us hold a number of exciting events around the country which you can see in the photos on the previous page. A few of these events I’d like to make special mention of including; the Royal Australian Mint’s first ever coin auction which saw some unique production pieces from the manufacturing process go under the hammer at Downies Australian Coin Auction. All items were sold including circulating coinage to collectible pieces from as early as 1984. These coins were produced outside of the official mintage of each release as a quality standard to inform the level of production. I am so pleased we were be able to do this in our 50th anniversary year, as it has been the ideal time to make these items available to those who value them.

In June we welcomed the incredible launch of our beautiful Magna Carta coins by the Prime Minister of Australia, at the Australian Parliament House. The Mint also had the pleasure in working alongside the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to launch the stunning lighthouse series up in sunny Queensland with the AMSA Chairman. Finally, we worked with the Canberra Greek and Cretan community to recognise important periods of battle in our Australia at War series.

On behalf of the Minties, we hope to see you soon at either a roadshow event or in Canberra. However if we don’t see you, we hope you enjoy our latest editions!

Ross MacDiarmid Chief Executive Officer Royal Australian Mint

During the Second World War, when Australia was fighting alongside the USA, the Japanese attacked a US Marine patrol on Manus Island. The soldiers needed help, but their radio had failed. With pigeon power as their only hope, DD.43.Q.879 faced the danger against all odds and reached HQ with an important message to save the patrol. For his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty he was awarded the prestigious Dickin Medal.

During the First World War, Sandy the War Horse accompanied Major General Sir William Bridges, the first commander of the Australian Imperial Force, to Gallipoli. Some 6100 Australian horses made that long journey. Sandy was the only one to come home.

Out of the 8190 outward and homeward voyages by the Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) ships, 305 ended in disaster, four of which have been found along the Western Australian coast. Batavia is Australia’s second oldest known shipwreck and was made famous by the battle of good versus evil on and off the ship during the seafaring adventure. To this day, anthropologists are still discovering the skeletons of the victims from this battle. This 2015 $5 Fine Silver Proof Coin commemorates its journey with an intricately designed depiction of the VOC ship Batavia on her maiden voyage, encompassed by an astrolabe. The VOC symbol is included to signify the story of the VOC Batavia.

On 1 July 1915, the Commonwealth of Australia officially accepted responsibility from state governments for all landfall and coastal lights around Australia. Today, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority is responsible for maintaining aids to navigation at some 388 sites around 37,600 kilometres of Australian coastline. These coins are a shining tribute to those who devoted their lives to manning and maintaining lighthouses in Australia. This critically acclaimed design captures the familiar scene many see when travelling up and down the Australian coast and cleverly intertwines the internal mirrors of the lighthouse into the rays on this spectacular design!

Guy has been a part of the Mint family for more than twenty six years.

He started as an apprentice fitter and machinist then moved onto tool making in the Toolroom which is still his home to this day, now as the Toolroom Supervisor.

Guy still remembers his first day of working for the Mint.

“My first day was in 1988. It was the bicentennial year and it was the year when the two dollar coin was released. I can recall after working in the Toolroom for only two months, we had to polish the key to the new Parliament House.”

His current role is to supervise ten Mint craftsmen to make dies, collars and machine parts.

During his time as a Mintie he has worked on an array of projects, however one unforgettable project for him is the 2000 Fine Silver Proof Olympic Games Sixteen-Coin Set.

“It was a joint venture between (the Royal Australian Mint) and the Perth Mint. It had three iconic features which I thought were good. They were edge-lettering, pad-printing and a mintmark. I was able to obtain a signature from Stuart Devlin [Australian circulating coin designer] on my Certificate of Authenticity.”

At times Guy also travels around Australia, as the unofficial face of the Mint, to install and operate the mobile press which allows for the production of collectible counterstamp coins. So next time you come to a show, make sure you come and say hello to Guy!

We treasure the coins in the National Coin Collection for many reasons, including their historical, technical and aesthetic values. One very special coin is also valued for its link with a great figure from Australia’s history: Sir Henry Parkes (1815–1896), also known as the ‘Father of Federation’.

One of the holey dollars in the National Coin Collection was previously owned by Sir Henry, according to the note of purchase that came with the coin. Holey dollars were a colonial solution to coin shortages in the early 19th century. They were used in NSW from 1813 until 1829.

Sir Henry Parkes was a prominent politician and journalist, and an instrumental advocate of Federation. He was also known to be an enthusiastic collector of curiosities. The holey dollar was no longer legal tender when Sir Henry arrived in NSW from England in 1839, so we assume that he kept it as a memento.

Australia celebrated the 200th anniversary of Sir Henry’s birth on 27 May this year and the Mint has marked this occasion with a collectible coin you can find on page 28. His holey dollar is on display in the Mint’s visitor gallery: a tangible link from Australia’s colonial past right through to Federation and beyond.

Capturing the Australian Sporting Spirit

The Mint will be travelling to Melbourne and Sydney in September to join in the grand final festivities of the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League. There will be an opportunity to purchase a coin to counterstamp as a memento of the season. These are subject to change; keep an eye on ramint.gov.au for the latest information.

Valour, Courage and Bravery

The Mint’s Visitors Gallery was recently transformed with the installation of the temporary exhibition: Valour, Courage,

Bravery, which will be on display until November 2015. The exhibition is in commemoration of the 40th anniversary

of the Australian Honours System, which recognises achievement and outstanding service amongst Australians. The awards have a direct link to most of the coins in your pocket as the coin designer, Stuart Devlin, also designed the medals for the founding awards of the Australian honours system in 1975. For more information, visit ramint.gov.au.
