Dear Friends I didn’t know we could have so much rain!!! And so many grey days when the sun didn’t shine!! But we must be positive and look on the bright side. It won’t last forever and hopefully by the time you are reading this we will be seeing the early signs of spring. Already I am noticing that the blackbirds are scurrying around the garden. With the New Year come changes. Both the Session Clerk, Sandy Nelson, and the Treasurer, Raeburn Archibald, have decided that it is time to hand on the reins to someone else. I wish to take this opportunity to thank them both for the sterling work done and the support which they have both given me personally. We wish them both well in their “retirement”. In church life we have begun again the journey towards Easter. The season of Lent started on Ash Wednesday, 10th February. It’s a time of reflection – something which we should all do –even Jesus took time out of his busy schedule to reflect and pray. We live in a busy world. For those who have not yet retired there are great pressures to perform, perform, perform. But people can only continue to perform if they take time to rest and play as well. Remember the old advert for a Mars bar – it helps you work, rest and play. One of the best known passages in the Bible is the 23rd Psalm. It is used in many contexts but is probably most familiar at funerals. It can also help you work, rest and play. I came across this parody of it a few years ago - it’s Psalm 23 for Busy People by Toki Miyashina Wishing you all God’s blessing Your Minister and friend

THE PARISH OF CRAIL

Crail Folk Club is up and running again with what we believe to be our best programme of events ever (yes alright we would say that wouldn’t we but it is true!). There are two patterns that emerge from the 2016 programme albeit purely by chance – women and North Americans!

We have six guest nights featuring either solo female artists or duos; we have four guest nights featuring artists from Canada or the USA. In addition we have home grown talent in abundance led by the legend that is the Tannahill Weavers. Their exciting brand of Scottish traditional music

has excited audiences for many years. This special concert is at the Community Hall on May 26th. Advance tickets can be had for £10 from 01333 450572.

Hopefully you will have received your copy of Karail before our first guest night on 11th February which features Robyn Stapleton and Claire Hastings, BBC Radio’s Young Traditional Singers of 2014 and 2015 respectively. Robyn was the star of BBC Alba’s New Year celebrations.

North Sea Gas will be with us in April. A sell out last time they visited; a sell out at the relatively enormous

Pitlochry Festival Theatre so sure to be a busy night. Also in April we have Dave Nachmanoff from California last seen in the UK in 2015 supporting Al Stewart at the Royal Albert Hall.

Our guest night in March is something of a coup. The first appearance in Scotland by an Australian singer called Jenny Biddle who relocated to Scotland permanently in January.

We must not forget that the guest nights alternate with singers nights which give local and visiting singers an opportunity to strut their stuff in a friendly environment.

So, all very exciting. Keep up to speed with club news via our website www.crailfolkclub.org.uk or the Crail Folk Club Facebook page. All of the shows apart from the Tannahills are in the Town Hall at 8pm.

Crail Community Choir gave another successful Christmas

presentation and Sing-along in December. Despite the dreadful weather keeping some people away, a fair number turned out to support the concert. A good evening was had by both audience and choir members. This year a small profit was donated to the Monday Club. The choir resumes on Monday the15th February at 7.30. Posters will be put up before that date and old and new members are very welcome. See 'About Crail' for details nearer the time.

“Crail Food Festival Society are celebrating their involvement within the National Events Programme for yet another year. The festival takes place on the 10th, 11th & 12th June and the organisers have been explaining that they will be looking to enhance the quality of the event rather than grow attendance figures. Everything kicks off on Friday evening with a launch supper and social gathering followed by two days of teach in sessions, a food and drink court, indoor producers market, evening dining, cookery theatre, children’s tea parties and a historical exhibition tracing food from the East Neuk Of Fife "

" From all accounts Crail Festival 2015 was a conspicuous success. Can the 4,200 putting rounds ever be beaten? Very talented , Scottish 'musical' women were at the heart of a vibrant programme: Grace Black, Jazz Singer: Charlotte Rowan, classical guitarist: Robyn Stapleton Trio with their unique blend of folk tunes: Christine Bovill captivated a large, enthusiastic audience in the Kirk Hall; and the inimitable Barbara Dickson brought the Festival to an exciting close. .........and so to 2016! EASTER EXHIBITION. CrAG Crail Art Group Crail Art Group will once again be mounting its now-traditional Easter Exhibition in the Kirk Hall from Friday 25th March to Monday 28th March. Exhibition of unframed paintings, jewellery and

crafts

Thank you to all who supported the exhibition of

unframed paintings, jewellery and crafts in the

Legion Hall last November. 66% of exhibitors were

fortunate enough to sell their work. The raffle

raised £113: This was donated to the Town Hall

Lift Fund.

Earth Hour 19th March 2016 8.30-9.30pm

Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for

Nature, is now the largest symbolic mass

participation event in the world. It involves over

7000 cities and towns across 152 countries or

territories. For this hour on a Saturday evening we

are asked to turn off as many lights as we can

manage (hopefully all) as a massive show of

concern for the environment. Let’s add Crail to the

growing list of those participating this year.

JAM NATIVITY PLAY

A big thank you to all the children of

Crail Church Sunday School – JAM,

who took part recently in their annual

Nativity play. The children retold the

story of Christmas by performing a

variety of songs as well as readings

and were accompanied by Tara

Stockwell and Betty Kitching on the

piano and organ during the

procession. The starring role was

played by the sheep from Barnsmuir

Farm (thank you Alice and Tim), who expressed his opinion with some exceptionally good

“BAA’s!” Both the congregation and the children seemed to enjoy the Christmas Nativity

spirit. A traditional nativity play with an edge always seems to be a winning formula at

Christmas time.

CEILIDH IN KINGSBARNS

A fundraising ceilidh was held in Kingsbarns Memorial Hall on the 14th of November. The

night was a great success, with the proceeds from the evening donated to Kingsbarns

Church. Billy Anderson and his band provided the music and were superb. They played all

the well-known dances, as well as a few less known ones. Billy talked us through them

though and great fun was had by all! Raffle prize donations were fantastic and incredibly

generous, with everything from bottles of wine, Christmas crackers and boxes of

chocolates, to a bottle of malt whisky, a meal voucher from the Inn at Kingsbarns, and a

voucher from the Kingsbarns Distillery. Stovies (or vegetarian ones) and shortbread were

served up at the interval, along with tea and coffee. Everyone brought their own booze, but

……………………………………………………………………………..crisps and soft drinks were on sale,

……………………………………………………………………………..…..adding to the proceeds donated to the

Fairtrade Fortnight Crail Parish Church

Sit down for breakfast. Stand up for farmers.

This celebrity-fronted multi-platform campaign will run from 29 FEBRUARY –13 MARCH

2016 and highlight the severe lack of food security for farmers around the world, bringing

together shoppers, campaigners and businesses to take action.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 will feature a giant Fairtrade breakfast to inspire the UK public to

sit down for breakfast in support of the farmers who grow the food we have every

morning, such as coffee, tea, cocoa and bananas. Crail Parish Church will be taking part in

this breakfast and invite you to join them on March 6th at 10.30 in the Kirk Hall.

Lack of food security is one of the world’s most critical issues. Despite millions of farmers

and workers in developing countries working hard every day to grow the food we eat,

many don’t earn enough to know where their next meal is coming from. Half of the world’s

hungry people, nearly 400 million, are estimated to live on small farms.

Fairtrade works with 1.5 million farmers and workers in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin and

Central America enabling them to earn a sustainable income and the Fairtrade Premium

that they can invest in vital community, business and

environmental projects. Food security is linked closely to

economic growth, stable incomes and reduced risk and vulnerability.

A better income means more money to buy food and the ability to

invest in generating other food sources, such as growing new crops.

Christian Aid Week May 15th -21st

We are lucky in Crail that we have not suffered any flooding this year unlike many other parts

of Scotland. Flooding is the Central theme for Christian Aid Week this year. Many of those

Christian Aid helps in Bangladesh live on low lying islands on the Brahmaputra River and their

homes are often washed away in the floods. Home Safety packages are making all the

difference. These packages allow those affected to raise their homes onto earth plinths,

giving a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow essential crops without worrying it will

all be washed away. None of this is possible without the money raised during Christian Aid

Week. Christian Aid works with the world’s poorest people in around 50 countries regardless

of race or faith. As well as helping in times of crisis they also tackle the causes and

consequences of poverty and injustice.

Events for this year in Crail have yet to be finalised but will be advertised nearer the time.

THE PARISH OF KINGSBARNS

CAROL SINGING ROUND THE VILLAGE The Carol Singing was held on the evening of Monday 14 December and there was a very good turnout of local people joined by a group from Crail who kindly came along to join in. Following heavy rain earlier on in the day, the weather turned mild and dry for the evening which made it possible to cover almost the whole of the village including the new housing development. Afterwards Eileen Brown kindly invited everyone to her house for refreshments and goodies plus Mr and Mrs Preston of The Inn who kindly extended an invitation to The Inn for a complimentary drink all of which were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The whole evening was very successful and the excellent sum of £181.88 was raised, to be divided between TCCL (Tayside Children with Cancer & Leukaemia) and ENABLE. Grateful thanks are due to everyone who came along to sing, do the collecting, provide hospitality, and all who opened their doors to listen and donate so generously.

GRASPING THE NETTLE: THE SCIENCE AND GOD DEBATE The three DVDs “Exploring The God Question” were shown in Kingsbarns Memorial Hall, on three consecutive Sundays in November 2015. They were well attended and the discussion, over a cup of tea, was most stimulating! The question arises as to whether there is sufficient interest for the DVDS to be shown again this year. DATAPROTECTIONACT&THECHURCH

We seem regularly to hear stories about the loss of sensitive or confidential information - sometimes attracting lurid, sometimes amusing headlines. But lapses of security, be it from criminal intent or just carelessness, do have serious consequences. Data protection is an important matter. Legal safeguards exist in the UK where the Data Protection Act covers the use of personal

information by organisations, businesses and governments. The Church of Scotland has

to conform to this legislation and, in fact, stronger legal protection is provided for

information judged to be more sensitive – including that of religious belief.

This has the effect of making something as commonplace as a list of names and

addresses of church members, subject to stricter legal protection. In the eyes of the law

such a list identifies people as having a Christian belief.

Crail and Kingsbarns churches both hold some information that falls within the scope of

the Data Protection Act and which may be stored electronically or in paper form.

Examples include the Membership Roll, the Baptismal Roll and the names of people who

make ‘gift aid’ or ‘free will’ offerings. Such information is held and used only in respect of

the life and work of the Church and is protected in accordance with Church of Scotland

guidelines (which reflect legislation). The Church’s ‘Privacy Policy’ is on display in both

churches and also in Crail Kirk Hall.

Access to this sort of information is strictly limited to those trustees having a ‘need to

know’ in order to perform church office-bearer duties. In the case of our two churches

this means the Minister, Session Clerks, Roll Keepers, Treasurers and Safeguarding

Officers. However, all trustees have received training in the provisions of the Act and

particularly on the care needed in handling and protecting information.

A particular requirement of the Act should also be mentioned: that the holding of personal information, requires the written consent of the person providing it. To this end the churches are contacting everyone for whom records are held, in order to seek consent. Something that may be seen as an irritation, especially for people who have been church members for many years - but sadly perhaps just another sign of our times! We ask for your help and forbearance. Everyone has the right under the Act to

know what records are held on them, to

receive copies of such records and, if wished,

to require that such records be deleted.

This short article does not attempt anything other than the briefest outline of the way

the Church of Scotland is affected by the Data Protection Act.


THEMEANINGSOFEASTER

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed. The Easter story is at the heart of Christianity.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday marks Jesus' resurrection. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday (now known as Good Friday), his body was taken down from the cross, and buried in a cave tomb. The tomb was guarded by Roman Soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance, so that no-one could steal the body .On the Sunday, Mary Magdalene, followed later by some of Jesus' disciples visited the tomb and found that the stone had been moved, and that Jesus' body had gone. Jesus himself was seen that day by Mary and the disciples, and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call this the Resurrection.

The week leading up to Easter is called Holy Week.

Holy Week

Palm Sunday

This is the Sunday before Easter Day. It is the first day of Holy Week and celebrates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Crowds of people came out of the city to greet him, throwing down palm branches on the road. Anglican and Roman Catholic churches give out small crosses made from palm leaves, as a reminder of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem and his death on the cross. Some Christians keep these in their homes all year as a symbol of their faith.

Maundy Thursday

This is the Thursday before Easter Day

Last Supper: On Maundy Thursday Christians remember when Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples, breaking bread and drinking wine, which is now known as the Last Supper. Many Christians remember this by sharing bread and wine together in a service called Holy Communion, Eucharist or Mass. It is a reminder that Jesus sacrificed his life for mankind. At this meal Jesus told his followers that they should love and serve one another. He demonstrated this by washing the feet of the disciples - something a servant would normally do. You can read this story in the Bible in John Ch.13v1-15

The word Maundy comes from the command (mandate) given by Jesus at the Last Supper, that we should love one another. Roman Catholic church services include a ceremony in which the priest washes the feet of 12 people to commemorate Jesus' washing the feet of his disciples.

Good Friday

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion. Good Friday is a day of mourning in church. During special Good Friday services Christians remember Jesus' suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith.
