Country Week 2017

On Sunday, 17th of September 2017, 17 students left Wagin for Perth to go and play a week of basketball and netball. We had a mixed basketball team and an all-girls netball team with both teams doing exceptionally well throughout the whole week.

The netball girls were the first team from Wagin to get into A division. Basketball won B division as well as the sportsmanship award. We competed against Narembeen, Bridgetown, Gingin, Exmouth and Derby just to name a few.

Over the week we also had time to have a bit of fun after the games finished. On Sunday when we arrived in Perth we went and played squash, finishing the evening with a little barbeque. Monday night we travelled to Mirrabooka to play neon bowling where we all com-peted against our roommates. On the third evening we were privileged to go on a river cruise where we danced all night long until our feet hurt. Wednesday night all rooms competed against each other in a MasterChef competition. We all cooked two meals for ourselves and the teachers who judged us. Night four was dinner and shopping at Joondalup Shopping centre and after we went and played laser tag. Overall we had an amazing week full of competitiveness, fun, laughter and lots and lots of singing!

Thank you and congratulations to all students who gave their all and tried their hardest throughout the week. A big thankyou to Mr Mullin, Mrs Kirk and especially Miss Bennison for putting in an amazing effort and giving up their time after school two times a week to train us to play to the best of our ability so that we could have an amazing country week.

From the Principal

Cass Harris-Moroney

Welcome back, Term 4 as usual is set to be very busy. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and are ready to go. This term we have many events and activities to look forward to. Please keep an eye on notes coming home, the Newsletter and our school website.

CONGRATULATIONS To all of our students who received certificates and/or medallions at the Monday assembly. We gave out certifi-cates for: Students who achieved in the top 20% on NAPLAN assessments Students who broke records at our Athletics Carnival Students who were recognised by their classroom teachers Writers of the Week Our Country Week Basketball team to recognise them winning the Sportsmanship award Students who were the ‘Rising Star’ player on their Country Week team

Medallions were given out to students who: Were the ‘Most Valued’ player on their Country Week team Were the ‘Most Improved’ player on their Country Week team

STAFF RECOGNITION Mrs Pangler, Ms Child and Mrs King were recognised by parents and/or community members for the positive difference they make to the lives of the children they teach. This was done through the ‘A Day Made Better’ teaching awards. As the award organisers state:

“An exceptional teacher is the foundation of a strong and happy school community’.

Wagin District High School is very lucky to have many exceptional teachers; it is wonderful that three of them have been recognised and nominated.

INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL Ms Bennison, Mr Mullin, Ms Bickers, Mrs Eckersley and Mrs Pilkington will take our Interschool Carnival to the Wagin Oval on Friday, October 27 to compete. I wish them all the very best on the day and know they will be stel-lar representatives of our school and community.

Our wonderful P&C will be catering for lunch and selling other refreshments throughout the day.

If any parents, community members or family members would like to volunteer their time on Friday to assist please contact Ms Bennison through the office on 9861 1877.

2018 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS Our School development Days for 2018 as approved by school staff and the school council are: Monday, January 29 Tuesday, January 30 Monday, April 30 Monday, August 20 Monday, October 8 Friday, December 14

Students return to school on Wednesday, January 31 and finish the year on Thursday, December 13. Please note Easter also falls during the school term next year with Friday, March 30 being Good Friday. Easter Monday (April 2) and Easter Tuesday (April 3) are public holidays with term one ending on Friday, April 13. Term 1 is an 11 week term and Term 2 is a 9 week term.

School will open on Friday, March 9, Woolorama Friday. Wagin District High School staff will continue to support Woolorama with many staff volunteering their time on Saturday, showcasing student work in our school display and next year will investigate increasing student interaction with Woolorama by taking students up there on an excursion. This decision has been made by the Wagin District High School staff to ensure we are able to have a development day in term four to plan for 2019. Having three school development days in term one is not the best use of time as we do not have enough student data to conduct a thorough school review by March 9. Students have only been at school six weeks by then with two weeks of swimming lessons, a swimming carnival and a pub-lic holiday all squeezed in during that time. School development days may change from year to year according to the needs of our school.

Emma Kirk

Deputy Principal [email protected]

Welcome back to school. I trust you had a restful two weeks break and are now prepared for a productive Term 4.

This term sees our Kindy transition continue each Tuesday fortnight. Students have been engaging in a range of fun activities facilitated by Mrs Spooner to assist them in becoming familiar with the Kindy environment and learning what to expect when at school next year. Thankyou to those of you that have made this a priority. It is exciting to see approximately 20 students each fortnight. Next Kindy transition will see our Student Leaders take parents on a walking tour of our school.

If you have not yet completed an enrolment package, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Last weekend, our hard working Nature Play committee met again to build the next instal-ment for the Cluster play area. Our students now have a boat at the end of the jetty to play in and a beautiful seat that spans around the paperbark tree for a quiet chat with friends. If you haven’t already, I urge you to take a walk through to check it out; its truly amazing! Thank you to each and every person that volunteered their time, we are extremely grateful and blown away with your creations.

Upcoming dates to add to your calendars;

Wednesday 25 October: School Photos and Kindergarten Messy Play Excursion Friday 27 October: Interschool Athletics Carnival hosted by Wagin DHS Monday 11 December: School Reports are sent home Tuesday 12 December: Presentation Day Thursday 14 December: Last day of Term 4 for students

Enjoy your fortnight,

Jolene Abbott Deputy Principal

Welcome to Term 4, 2017! It is lovely to hear of all the wonderful things the families have been doing in the last two weeks, some travelling, some staying home – but all spending valuable family time to-gether. This term is packed full with mock job interviews, school photos, interschool carnival, Remem-brance Day considerations, transition days, the Senior Citizen’s Christmas luncheon and end of year celebrations. Please check the calendar for dates and times. As always, the high school is a hub of activ-ity and I send out a huge thank you to all of the committed staff who work so tirelessly to make these events happen.

MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS The year 9 & 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in the mock job interviews this Friday at the Wagin CRC supported by our community members. Many thanks to Mrs Pieterse for organising this experience for the students.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY The annual school photo day is on Wednesday, October 25. It would be great to see all students in school uniform for their photo. As usual, the uniform shop will be open Friday from 8.30am - 10.30am.

OLNA The year 10 students will be given their OLNA test results this week. To help students and parents/carers understand the purpose and importance of the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA), the School Curriculum and Standard Authority have developed a short video that can be viewed at: https://wace1516.scsa.wa.edu.au/assessment/olna To successfully meet the literacy and numeracy requirements, students must demonstrate the skills regarded as essential to meet the demands of everyday life and work in a knowledge-based economy. These skills are described in Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework. These skills must be demonstrated in: Literacy (reading and writing); and Numeracy. Students who have achieved Band 8 or higher in any of the three components of reading, writing and numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are acknowledged as having demonstrated proficiency in using a range of ACSF Level 3 skills in that component and will not be required to sit the corresponding OLNA component.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Good luck to all the competitors involved in the Interschool Athletics carnival. We hope you that will represent Wagin well and show good sportsmanship on the day. Thank you to Ms Bennison and par-ents who will be busy supporting our team. We greatly appreciate your time, effort and dedication to our school.

STAFF POSITIVES Joanne King was nominated for the ‘A Day Made Better’ teaching award, acknowledging the difference her teaching makes to students lives everyday. Congratulations to Mrs King. Increasingly, we are re-ceiving positives from our community members who wish to share the good deeds being carried out by our staff. It is always really nice to hear the positive stories about our dedicated staff and we encourage anyone who has positive praise to share their experiences.

The internet can be an exciting and wonderful place for children and the whole family. It is a great tool for learning, social-ising, and entertainment. However, just like in the real world the internet involves risks and challenges.

In an online environment, children may be exposed to content that is sexually explicit, violent, prohibited or even illegal. They may also experience cyber bullying, be at risk from contact by strangers and unknowingly or deliberately share per-sonal information.

As a parent or carer, you can play an important role in helping your child to have safe and positive experiences online. For more information, the Raising Children Network website has current articles about cyber bullying, technology and enter-tainment, especially for teens and pre-teens, go to www.raisingchildren.net.au

Quick Tip

Screen time activities, such as watching TV, playing computer games, or browsing the internet, usually involve sitting or lying down for long periods which can harm our health. Try to move more and sit less by limiting screen time for entertain-ment to less than two hours a day.

KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE

NATURE PLAY Throughout the year a dedicated committee of Nature Play enthusiasts have continued with the plan to re-

vamp the cluster playground area by adding some Nature Play style elements for the students to enjoy. The

original plan was designed in consultation with staff and students in 2016, has been implemented over the

course of 2017, and will continue into the new school year. The project thus far has seen the installation of a

mud kitchen and campfire, tunnel mound, boat and jetty, teepee and a seating area acting as a meeting place

for students.

This project could not have been implemented without the support of parents and citizens who have volun-

teered their time and skills at various busy bees throughout the year. The Nature Play committee would like

to take this opportunity to thank the following volunteers who have assisted during the course of the year:

- Chris and Melanie English

- John and Martina Pascoe

- Tim and Anna Scott

- Phil and Amber Ward

- Jay and Julie Mangalavite

- Paul and Nicole Ward

- Ben Robinson

- Sandy Scardetta

- Darren Smith

- Brendan and Catherine Julius

- Daniel Dwane

- John Beard

- Michael and Mandy Harrington

Special mention must also go to the students who have attended busy bees with their parents and enthusiasti-

cally assisted when needed.

The committee is continually seeking volunteers for this project, so if you are interested in lending your skills

at a future busy bee, please contact one of the committee members (Melanie English, Martina Pascoe, Anna

Scott, Amber Ward, Julie Mangalavite or Nicole Ward) who will gladly accept your offer.
