So far so good! The weather seems to be holdng out and no sign yet of the heavy snow and freezing temperatures of last year. Most peoples idea of a perfect Christmas, would be a white Christmas. Although it would be nice. We dont want it to prevents us getting out and about to visit family & friends.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the magazine throughout the last year and I would also once more like to thank all our volunteers who brave all weathers in getting the Community Matters to your door.

Finally I would like to wish all our readers and supporters a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year

The Old Pit Head Baths

( Update )After many years of speculation. Graham Carter project officer of the Home Communities Agency recently confirmed to the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust their intention to demolish the old Kiveton Park Colliery Pit Head Baths within the next 6 – 12 months.

They are currently in the process of securing a contractor to carry out the demolition.

The Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust intends to organize a meeting of all concerned to ensure that all internal heritage artifacts are preserved elsewhere for posterity.

ROTHERHAM VOLUNTEER OF

THE YEAR :ARTHUR

WHITEWAYOnce again Kiveton Park & Wales has reason to be proud as we are delighted to announce that Arthur Whiteway of Queens Avenue Wales, ( pictured far right) has been voted Rotherham Community Awards volunteer of the year. Receiving his award at a gala evening held at the Carlton Park hotel Rotherham in November.

Arthur attended the evening with his wife Peggy and daughter Ann along with Steph Hyrschko of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust. Steph said “We all had our fingers crossed and waited with baited breath for the result and when

Arthurs name was read out as the winner we were all over the moon” Arthur really deserves this award. He has been an active resident of Kiveton Park all his life. Over the last few years his volunteering has been focused mainly around the Old Colliery Offices. But what is most remarkable about Arthur is that he is 84 years old and is a true example and inspiration to us all.Arthur was unaware that he had been nominated until he recieved a letter from Voluntary Action Rotherham saying that he had made the final three. Arthur said it was a real

surprise to find someone had nominated me and even more of a surprise to go on and win it.

SAVE A LIFE AT NEW KIVETON PARK BLOOD DONOR SESSIONSResidents of Kiveton Park and surrounding areas are being urged to show some festive spirit by giving blood this December at the new blood donor session to be held at the Village Hall in Kiveton Park. As the Christmas holidays approach and many people are busy preparing for the festive break by shopping and celebrating with family and friends, it’s easy to forget that appointment in the diary to donate blood. In addition to the challenges that Christmas can bring, if last year’s wintry weather repeats itself, blood donations could fall by as much as 20% over the festive season and into the New Year.NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think of hospital patients who rely on vital blood transfusions during December – those receiving life-saving cancer treatments, surgery and emergency care which continues in hospitals every day of the year. Holly Mason, NHSBT’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for South Yorkshire, said: “The arctic conditions across South Yorkshire last winter presented severe challenges for the blood supply, yet blood donors made heroic efforts to reach donation sessions. We are now calling on our regular donors and asking new donors to show warm hearts by helping to save lives and making a date to donate this winter.”Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

The Kivo Kid2011 saw Josh “The Kivo Kid” compete in the highly competitive very popular televised Thundersport Aprilia Superteen Challenge. With grids in excess of 35 riders from all over the country this was going to be Josh’s biggest challenge to date. The season got off to a fantastic start with Josh qualifying 6th, and taking a 4th and a podium 3rd at the opening round at Mallory park in Leicestershire in March. Team Hill then had to miss the next 3 rounds due to injury. Josh then came back fighting at a monsoon very wet weekend at Cadwell Park 12 weeks later bringing the Crossroads Aprilia RS125 home in 4, top 10 finishes. With Josh’s confidence building after his crash Josh rode fantastically for the remainder of the season taking 2x 4ths at Brands Hatch, and a 4th and a podium 3rd place at Oulton Park , and was constantly finishing in the top 10, finishing the season in 7th place overall out of 35 other riders. This is a fantastic achievement and I’m very proud of him, myself and Martin Bell have worked closely with Josh to bring the best out of him. Dec 2011

The Do’s & Dont’s of a happy family Christmas.DON’T expect it to be perfectLike it or not, your Christmas will not be perfect. You will over cook the turkey, under cook the Christmas pudd and end up sobbing into a huge glass of Pinot Grigio all because your mother in law has criticized your Yorkshire puddings. Start the festive period accepting you’re not Nigella it won’t be perfect and enjoy the bits that go well.

DO try and relaxBy the time Christmas Day arrives, most of us are exhausted. You probably spent the weeks prior to the big day panic shopping, baking everything that Delia suggested in her Christmas special and ferrying the family from one festive event to another. Put some time on one side for YOU. It is after all a holiday.

DO get out and aboutYou are not under house arrest over the Christmas period. Don’t be afraid of getting wrapped up and

taking a bracing walk. It will clear the house and let the kids run off some steam.

DON’T expect the kids to be angelsThey’ve broken up from school bursting with excitement. You’ve been using the, “if you’re not good, Father Christmas won’t come” routine since the middle of summer, then the presents are opened and your little angels turn into monsters. Combine that with too much chocolate, treats and attention form well meaning visitors and the magic of Christmas can soon disappear.

DO give out jobsWrite a list of jobs you need doing on the big day. If your mother in law thinks she makes the best gravy set her to work and get her to prove it. Remember a busy cook is often a quiet cook.

DON’T waste moneyIt’s going to be a tough year for us all. We want to give our kids the best. Most of us will celebrate making it to Christmas with a job and a roof over our head. Set a spending limit and stick to it. Keep reminding yourself that it’s not what you spend

on each other it’s more about the time you spend together.

DO enjoy the preparation and run up to ChristmasDon’t let it be hard work, enjoy it, The cake may not have turned out exactly like the one on TV and decorating the tree might be taking three times longer than you’d expected because the kids are helping. But remember Christmas memories are made up of the kids helping to decorate the tree. The tree may not be exactly as you’d want it, but you’ll have happy children and great memories.

DON’T stress laugh instead.Forget all about the stress and trying to prepare a meal fit for royalty, okay so you didn’t find the latest toy. chill! Remember when you strip away all the tinsel it’s about preparing one meal on one day with a few decorations and one or two gifts. Think about your friends and family, listen to the laughter of your kids and remember the smiles on their faces and have a happy Christmas.

Wales Chapel is starting to look good - the pews were mentioned in the last newsletter and I am delighted to say that all have now been sold on. We had a ‘phone call the first week in November from none other than Dave Berry the famous vocalist who a lot of us remember with songs like ‘The Crying Game’ and ‘Little Things’ to name just two of his hits. Dave actually bought the last pew from Wales chapel and knowing he was coming to pick up we just happened to have a camera with us hence the photograph which I am delighted with, having been a fan from the off. We are practicing in the chapel for the forthcoming pantomime to be held at the Montgomery theatre, Surrey Street, Sheffield. It’s ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and sounds like this is definitely Roy’s last one! Only this morning a friend told me that a mum with two young children who are now old enough to appreciate would like to purchase tickets - a whole new generation beginning to take interest. The dates are : Saturday 7th January matinee 2:00pm and 6:30pm evening, Friday 13th January 7:15pm Saturday 14th January matinee 2:00pm and 6:30pm evening performance. The ticket prices are £8 full, seniors £7, children and students £5. So in these times of rising costs

we have kept our prices down! Wales Musical Theatre Company held their Christmas Fayre in the chapel this year which was held on Wednesday 23rd November. The event was well attended, everyone joined in the festivities, enjoying a home-made mince pie and the new refurbishment, which is on-going, but people who have seen it are amazed. For the first time in a long time Worksop Circuit Choristers presented their Christmas concert at Wales on Saturday the 3rd December and sang amongst other pieces, ‘Love Transcending’ by John Peterson, beautiful to listen to and easy on the ear. At the Christmas carol service the cast from WMTC will be singing two carol arrangements conducted by David Burgess, to be held on the 18th December at 3:00pm led by our Minister Colin Barrick. an ‘unmissable’ event. Please check it out. As always, thank you for everyone’s interest and kindness A very happy Christmas to everybody.

MissionFish is the Charity which oversees all the 500 + charities selling on E-bay. They check that they are bona fida charities, that they are trading ethically and give them support when needed. If you see a blue and yellow ribbon next to an item for sale on E-bay it means that it is being sold by a genuine charity registered with MissionFish. In October this year MissionFish gave all the Charities on E-bay the opportunity to apply for one of two £10,000 business support grants. We are thrilled that our very own Kivo-ebiz was one of the two charities selected and they have received £10,000 to employ a sales assistant for 20 hours per week from January on a 12 month contractWhilst Kivo-ebiz continues to sell your individual items they are also linking up with local businesses to sell their new lines or old stock to clear their shelf space

They have recently teamed up with “Copper Gecko” a company set up by local Kiveton craftsman, Abe Pepler, to make bespoke items of small furniture from reclaimed timber. He can make all sorts of items to your own specifications of size, colour or wood stain finish. Below are some of the items (Trunk/toy box, tea tray, Coat hooks and Foldable table) that we have recently sold for him on E-bay.Please contact us on 01909 770 007 if you would like to order something direct without paying the postage costs or if you are a local business looking for a charitable way to sell your stock on the internet.

Waleswood S.C.C is 107 years old and has just completed a successful 2011 both on and off the field. On the playing side the 1st team have gained back to back promotions by becoming Bassetlaw Div 4 winners and the 2nd team just missed out on promotion by 2 points from Div 7.The Mansfield Sunday team missed out by just 1 point on promotion from Div 6 so all in all an extremely good season so well done to the captains and players of all three teams. The junior section consisting of 7-14 years of age is continuing to produce good results and congratulations to two of the U14 who made their debut in senior cricket. Due to the kind sponsorship of www.worldofsuperheros.co.uk and Stirling Commodities the facilities have again been improved with the construction of a new patio with picnic tables and floodlighting. Adding to this, the new furniture in the lounge has made the club a welcoming place for anyone wanting to play cricket, visit or hold a function. As a registered charity fund raising is vital and many events have been held and well attended by members their families and friends

so many thanks to all who supported the club.On a more disappointing note, during September the junior practice nets were stolen and the playing area severely vandalised by a motor cycle, this was described by the police as criminal damage so if anyone has any information please get in touch with either the club or police. The final fund raising event of the year is the Xmas Draw on Friday 17th December hopefully at the Duke of Leeds or if not, at the club house.Winter senior nets have commenced at Sheffield United indoor cricket school on Bawtry road, Brinsworth on Saturdays from 1pm-2-30 pm.Junior nets commence on Sunday 27th November at Killamarsh leisure centre at 5-00pm with club coaches in attendance. In 2012 the club has withdrawn its Sunday team in the Mansfield league to concentrate on playing friendly fixtures at Waleswood. This will provide the opportunity for more of the juniors to play and therefore we will have the following teams for the 2012 Season.1st team –div 3 Bassetlaw league2nd team –div 7 “ “U11 hardball/soft ball Bassetlaw/Sheffield leagueU13 hardball “ “ “ Anyone interested in playing senior or junior cricket please contact our coaches Simon Cope 07875579114 or Gary Lomas 07851216361 If you require any information re the club or are interested in any form of sponsorship please contact Keith Board (Club Secretary) on 01909770787 or Tony Cope(Chairman) on 01909773417 or visit our web site www.waleswoodcricketclub.org.uk

St John the Baptist, Finningley Lodge & Kiveton Meadows Junior School

enjoy Boxing day.

Finningley Lodge was recently host to the Opera-tion Christmas Child shoebox appeal. Residents have been busy collecting shoeboxes. They wrapped the lids separately in seasonal paper be-fore deciding if the gift was for a boy or a girl. The boxes were then filled with presents such as a soft toy bear, a packet of crayons, a colouring book, toothbrush and toothpaste, tennis ball, gloves and scarf. The gifts where donated by residents and the school children of Kiveton Meadows Junior School. 100 shoeboxes were delivered to St John the Baptist parish church where they were blessed at the special shoebox service before being sent over-seas to children who will not otherwise receive a

Christmas present. The idea was the brain child of Rebecca Schofield, Linda Neenan (warden at Finnin-gley) and Judy Elstone (Head of Kiveton Meadows) who wanted to encourage different groups within the community to collaborate and help others less fortunate than themselves.Linda described the finished articles as ‘love in a box’ whilst Rebecca said it was so good to involve the children as well as residents in packing the boxes because they really wanted each box to be special.’ Any items or shoe-boxes for next year can be passed on to Rebecca at The Vicarage, Manor Road, Wales. The photo’s show children helping residents to make up the shoeboxes and The Reverend Gary Schofield being presented with a box from the residents.

MOTHERS UNIONArticle by Wendy Wallace

During November, the Mothers Union from Wales and Kiveton Park were privileged to have a very informative speaker, Sister Jill Hancock A.K.A ‘Just Jill’ from the Church Army. Jill works with a project called ‘Chocolate Box’ who befriend and care for the women (and men) who work within the sex industry in Sheffield. She is part of a team of 12 volunteers whose aim is to let them know of God’s love and that with Him they can make choices and positive changes within their lives. They always refer the women for professional/medical help in specific areas. Here are some of the things she talked to us about. The average life expectancy of a woman who works within the sex industry is 40 years old. 95% of them are addicted to drugs or alcohol, cocaine or heroin being the drug of choice. A lot of them have come from the care system and many have children who are now within the care system. Young women, some as young as 13, are often groomed by

‘charming’ men into the industry and when they get too old or are unable to continue, the younger ones merely take their place. ‘Chocolate box’ work in two teams. One team runs drop in sessions where the woman can come for safe company, a hot meal perhaps or maybe even do some crafts. The other street team go out on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night offering the women they meet a chat, some food and even a prayer. The key is to build relationships and trust with those they meet. The volunteers might accompany them on prison visits; appointments or visit them in hospital. They sometimes go with them to visit their children who may only be allowed supervised visits under a care order. Sadly they occasionally attend the funeral of a woman or even take the service.‘Chocolate Box’ provides opportunities for the women to experience ‘normal’ activities for their age e.g. the cinema, bowling or even going for a fast meal out because the little money they earn is usually spent on feeding their addiction or that of their partners. The project is making a positive difference in people’s lives. One woman they came into contact

with was introduced to drugs at the age of 8 and then to prostitution at the age of 13. She became pregnant and although the child was taken into care straight away, she knew she wanted to make changes in her life for her and the child. She became clean, proved responsible enough to care for the child and she and the child have recently been baptised.‘Chocolate box’ have been donated a house so that they may offer the women the support of God’s family. Although it will not be a residential house, the women can pop in for a cup of tea, have a meal sat round a family table, watch a DVD or just take a hot shower or bath. Most importantly they will be offered friendship. Our branch of the MU have decided to put together a ‘hamper’ of toiletries for the Cornerstone House so if anyone would like to donate anything please give it to someone at the St John the Baptist Church and we will pass them on.Our branch look forward to the Christmas Crafts evening in December and then our New Years Meal in January. If you would like to know more about the M.U and what we do then please call Marilyn 779851

WALES HIGH SCHOOLSchool Partnership

Art Exhibition Wales High School celebrated their International Partnership with College IbnSina, based in Casablanca, Morocco with an Art Exhibition.

The Exhibition was held in the school’s Art Gallery and event was attended by Cultural and Press Counsellor, Mrs.Naima Senna from the Moroccan Embassy and marks the school’s 4thpartnership since gaining International School status in 2003. The partnership is also the first International partnership between a UK school and one in Morocco.Headteacher, John Day, started by emphasising the school’s commitment to the international community: “If International Relations had started earlier within schools, the world would be a better and safer place”. When approached after, he described the event as “pioneering, inspirational, and individual” and went on to explain what the new partnership meant to the school. “It is now the joint responsibility of both of our schools to continue growth and development between our two countries. This event marks the expansion of our International Partnership program to the African continent and the Embassy tells us that no other school has a direct relationship with other

Pictured here are the seven Y11 students responsible for the plaque. The pupils used the techniques and processes that they have developed during their City & Guilds course in construction, based at Vector 31.They were congratulated by Wales High School Headteacher, Mr.Day on Friday 14th October along with their trainers, Terry Orwin, Brian Higham and the director of Work Related Learning, Kevin Shore.

Moroccan schools”“I am honoured and privileged to represent His Majesty King Mohammed VI here today. I take pride in the partnership between Wales High School and College IbnSina, and hope that this will be reinforced and I would like to offer the full support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to the partnership” said Mrs.Senna, the Moroccan Cultural and Press Councillor. Also present at the event was Abdallah El Mouden; a teacher at College IbnSina. He expressed his gratitude at the exhibition stating “I am very proud to have Wales High School as the 1st ever international school and I am looking forward to the expansion of

the partnership in the future.”The exhibition, displayed various pieces of artwork from Wales High School, College IbnSina and Harthill Primary School, who’s International Events Coordinator, Jan Skepper, talked about her involvement with the school and its International Partnerships. “Wales High School is invaluable for links between the UK and other schools around

the world. We are currently working towards receiving our Advanced International Award and we have 3 projects running to help our pupils understand other cultures including a ‘Day in the Life’ photostory project between our school and Bangladesh.”The exhibition will be seen at College IbnSina in April 2012 to promote the partnership further. After receiving the International School’s Award in 2003, Wales High School currently has 4 International Partnerships with schools located in France, Romania, Paraguay and Morocco.

The Royal Shakespeare Company successfully captivated an audience ranging from primary school children, to our very own upper sixth formers and teachers at Wales High School on Wednesday 5th October. With actor Dharmesh Patel leading the way as Hamlet, a dynamic and diverse cast used their accomplished acting skills to make the complex language of Shakespeare and the dark plot of Hamlet accessible and enjoyable for all.Despite large parts of the play being cut, the plot was still maintained and conveyed in an understandable and enjoyable fashion. The Shakespearean play was performed in such a way that it appealed to a wide age range and included little quirks that made it different yet still not far away from Shakespeare’s trademark style. Modern popular songs such as Sam Sparro’s ‘Black and Gold’ were sung by Ophelia in her stages of insanity, to relate

to a younger mind, and to still keep the concept of her madness in place. “I think your first experience of Shakespeare should be a beautiful one. If his language is appreciated from an early age then it is likely to continue to be popular, to grow and develop and to be enjoyed by them as they grow older.” Actor-Debbie Korley (Hamlet and Ophelia).

KIVETON PARK & WALES HISTORY SOCIETY Article By Eileen Clark ( Thunder )

“Mum, can I go? Can I be ‘vacuated?” I can remember going home from school and asking that question and the next thing I can remember is being on a crowded Kings Cross station with lots of other kids all looking like me,

lost, with a luggage label in my coat buttonhole and a brown paper package. We were heralded into crowded railway carriages. I was very lucky: in our carriage a young man (who was probably in

charge), told us stories and jokes, making it a happy journey. I can then only remember, having arrived at Kiveton, being one of the last to be collected, but yet being oh so fortunate.I was placed with Mr. and Mrs. Bilham and sons Norman and Tony. At their house I was given something to eat- a boiled egg. Unfortunately, on it’s arrival, I burst into tears and wouldn’t eat it. Without further ado, Norman exclaimed “We’re not going to waste that, I’ll eat it!- we only get one a month.”

I must have been very tired and was soon taken to bed. Mrs Bilham had been issued with a canvas camp bed for me, but I awoke them in the night, cold and wet. With no more bother, I was taken into

their bed to sleep in the middle.

One of Mrs Bilham’s favourite reminiscences of that time was of me saying “Ain’t you fat, but ain’t you warm.” Next day was school

– Wales School, which was very different from Moulsecoomb Infants Brighton, which was a big, modern build school.I believe Miss Jones was the Headmistress. There I met some of the other evacuees. I think there were about half a dozen of us at Wales. Audrey Waller, Betty Crabb and there were two girl twins, called Tindell, I think. Two other evacuees I remember were Doreen Redshaw, who lived next door to me in Brighton and who lived with Mrs Emmerson, who had the shop which is now “JADE” and Alma Waller, Audrey’s sister. I hadn’t known any of them before, however, when we were sent back home, I found that some were from my school, but our school was quite large and covered quite a large area.I quickly made friends with others at Wales School. At that time we used to have to go home at lunchtime and I was lucky – Tony Bilham, who was working for the Co-op Milk, would meet me with his milk bike and ride me home in the front where the crates went.

I was very happy with Mr. and Mrs. Bilham, who I called “Pop and Mama.” They treated me as their own and it always remained so. Halfway through the

war we were sent home as they thought the war was ending, however we came back again and stayed another two years. The war brought many changes to our families. My father who had been sent

away from home making weapons, met another woman and after the war couldn’t settle at home. So my parents divorced. I had always kept in touch with the Bilhams and spent all but Christmas holidays with them, even when I finished school and went to work in London. At cup finals they always came by coach to London but took me out instead of going to the match. Later, I asked if I could come back to them as I had gone to live with my mother and stepfather who were for ever moving around, so here I was, back in Kiveton once more.I quickly found a job at Rothervale Manufacturing Company as a Telephone Receptionist, met Wilf, my husband and have lived here ever since.

it should read Kiveton Wireworks Football team.
