COMPUNAGE....AIKIDO FOR THE 21st CENTURY

Here’s something to consider......how do you ex-tendKi electronically?A ridiculous question youmay ask,and yet nowadays it is becoming increasingly rare to actu-ally communicate person-to-person.All those negotiations, discussions, transactions and dissertations that theAikidokacouldfeelsmugabouthandlingsowellwiththeirmind-blowinginterpersonal skills are nowconducted to the humof theCPUratherthanthemurmerofvoices. . Taking pride in fame is not as interesting as avoiding it. Cultivating hobbies is not as peaceful as minimising interests.

from Reflections of the Tao

Aiki - PoetryWhen I started Aikido it was in the kid’s classes,

But now I’m learning from great teachers and masters. In the children’s classes it was really fun,

When we could always play around and run.But the senior class needs discipline and Ki,

And when I started I really began to see.You can go to many arts with punches and kicks,

But I don’t think any other art can cover all these tricks. You learn from zenpo and kotegaeshi

And from kirikaeshi to udefuri. My sixteen year cousin fell down some stairs so straight,She did an aikido roll, she learned when she was eight.

You probably won’t be attacked in all of your life,But you can always practice with your wife.

Hayley McGlone Age 12 - Byron Bay Dojo

Aikido is not just a martial art,It makes you think from the heart. So, it’s not just about self defence,The principles make a lot of sense.

It has helped me in many ways,In my schoolwork throughout the days.

It has made me concentrate,And be more focussed in all I create.

When you walk into the training place,You meet many interesting people face to face.

Learning aikido is great,And if you are destined in your fate,

To practice aikido.Remember one thing, Ki, and you will see,

It’s not just a martial art.

THE THREE BROTHERSA rich man was dying so he called his

three sons and said to them.

‘I wish to leave my fortune intact so I will set each of you the same task to see which one is the

most capable at managing money.’

‘In my warehouse there are three large storerooms, all the same size. Here is a bag of silver each. Your

task is to each fill one storeroom with as much as your silver will buy.’

The first son bought sand with all his money

and filled a third of his room.

The second son bought soil with all his money and filled half his room.

The third son spent only a small portion of his money & bought some candles and matches

to fill his room with light.

Zen Story

The Gift of Insults There once lived a great warrior. Though quite old, he still was able to defeat any challenger. His reputation extended far and wide throughout the land and many students gathered to study under him. One day an infamous young warrior arrived at the vil-lage. He was determined to be the first man to defeat the great master. Along with his strength, he had an uncanny ability to spot and exploit any weakness in an opponent. He would wait for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing a weak-ness, and then would strike with merciless force and lightning speed. No one had ever lasted with him in a match beyond the first move. Much against the advice of his concerned students, the old master gladly accepted the young warrior’s challenge. As the two squared off for battle, the young warrior began to hurl insults at the old master. He threw dirt and spit in his face. For hours he verbally assaulted him with every curse and insult known to mankind. But the old warrior merely stood there motionless and calm. Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself. Knowing he was defeated, he left feeling shamed. Somewhat disappointed that he did not fight the in-solent youth, the students gathered around the old master and questioned him. “How could you endure such an indignity? How did you drive him away?”

“If someone comes to give you a gift and you do not receive it,” the master replied, “to whom does the gift belong?”
