As part of our professional development program for this year, we have worked to- gether as a faculty on arculang and im- plemenng a shared grading philosophy. Integral to this philosophy is the under- standing that grades and teacher comments on a report card or at conferences should reflect objecve feedback about student learning compared to agreed upon stand- ards. Grades should not be used as tools to movate or punish. They represent a stu- dent's learning status at a parcular mo- ment in me. When there is clarity about what a grade stands for, the conversaon shiſts away from rewards/punishment to acknowledgement of mastery of new skills and goal seng for areas that need im- provement. This approach also aligns with a “growth mindset” - an outlook on life and learning arculated by Carol Dweck in her book, “Mindset” which I shared with par- ents at our Back to School Night back in September. How does a growth mindset change the conversaon you have with your son/ daughter at report card me? I suggest that in lieu of praising intelligence with comments like: “You are so smart!” you acknowledge and praise the effort or strategies that went into aaining a good grade - Discuss what it took to get that grade - whether it was studying, making sure to bring home all of the appropriate materials for nightly review, persevering when some the of learning was challenging to master, asking for help when needed, etc. This type of feedback encourages fu- ture growth. In the scenario that a student does not do well, perhaps the conversaon could focus on possible reasons for the dis- appoinng performance (didn’t study or tried to ‘cram” the night before; gave up when the work became more difficult, did- n’t bring home materials, didn’t seek help when needed, etc). The focus again should be on next steps, i.e. What can the student do differently to achieve more success in the future? A parent should be the child’s home “coach” to help arculate goals and strategies and facilitate their implementa- on. We, at school, are ready to be your partners in this endeavor. I think you will find the feedback shared both at our recent parent teacher confer- ences, as well as on the upcoming report cards construcve. We recognize that eve- ry child is a work in progress and deserves our encouragement and support. When students perceive themselves as enes capable of learning, growth and change, they judge themselves less harshly and gen- uinely feel proud of even the “baby steps” in their learning journey. Those goals reached with a bit of “sweat” and effort are the sweetest! Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your Chanukah giſt and wishes. I hope you connue to enjoy the light and nachas every child brings to our yeshiva. All the best, Natalie Lichtman MESSAGE FROM MRS. LICHTMAN MESSAGE FROM MRS. LICHTMAN LAST CHANCE TO WIN $10,000.00! Hadlakas Neiros : 4 :16 PM

Shabbos ends: 5:35 PM 10 December 25, 2015

Dear Parents, Our first marking period has just concluded and teachers are busy reviewing student progress and setting goals for each learner. As part of our professional development program for this year, we have worked to-gether as a faculty on articulating and im-plementing a shared grading philosophy. Integral to this philosophy is the under-standing that grades and teacher comments on a report card or at conferences should reflect objective feedback about student learning compared to agreed upon stand-ards. Grades should not be used as tools to motivate or punish. They represent a stu-dent's learning status at a particular mo-ment in time. When there is clarity about what a grade stands for, the conversation shifts away from rewards/punishment to acknowledgement of mastery of new skills and goal setting for areas that need im-provement. This approach also aligns with a “growth mindset” - an outlook on life and learning articulated by Carol Dweck in her book, “Mindset” which I shared with par-ents at our Back to School Night back in September. How does a growth mindset change the conversation you have with your son/daughter at report card time? I suggest that in lieu of praising intelligence with comments like: “You are so smart!” you acknowledge and praise the effort or strategies that went into attaining a good grade - Discuss what it took to get that grade - whether it was studying, making sure to bring home all of the appropriate materials for nightly review, persevering when some the of learning was challenging to master, asking for help when needed, etc. This type of feedback encourages fu-ture growth. In the scenario that a student does not do well, perhaps the conversation could focus on possible reasons for the dis-appointing performance (didn’t study or tried to ‘cram” the night before; gave up

when the work became more difficult, did-n’t bring home materials, didn’t seek help when needed, etc). The focus again should be on next steps, i.e. What can the student do differently to achieve more success in the future? A parent should be the child’s home “coach” to help articulate goals and strategies and facilitate their implementa-tion. We, at school, are ready to be your partners in this endeavor. I think you will find the feedback shared both at our recent parent teacher confer-ences, as well as on the upcoming report cards constructive. We recognize that eve-ry child is a work in progress and deserves our encouragement and support. When students perceive themselves as entities capable of learning, growth and change, they judge themselves less harshly and gen-uinely feel proud of even the “baby steps” in their learning journey. Those goals reached with a bit of “sweat” and effort are the sweetest! Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your Chanukah gift and wishes. I hope you continue to enjoy the light and nachas every child brings to our yeshiva. All the best, Natalie Lichtman

A Peek Into Our Week A Peek Into Our Week:

MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS: Mrs. Sommer's Seventh Grade Math Class:

The boys were challenged to figure out how much oil was needed to fill the menorah in the Bais Hamikdash. They contemplated where to begin, then consulted a Chumash and ultimately used Rambam's Hilchos Beis Habechira to locate the dimensions necessary for the computations. Using Torah as a resource for mathematical equations highlights the rele-vance of Torah to modern math.

Rabbi Abraham’s Kitah Zayin: The 7th grade boys were treat-ed to a demonstration on how to check for shatnes by Rabbi Abraham. They learned how to differentiate between linen and wool fibers under a micro-scope. It was a lesson enjoyed by all on an optional Thanksgiv-ing school day.

Rabbi Wieder’s Science Class: The seventh grade is currently learning about motion and ener-gy. The boys built hovercrafts out of CD's and balloons, and learnt the principles of reducing friction. The advanced STEM program and all the materials were provided to YBH by CIJE.

Mrs. Markinson Sixth Grade Social Studies Class: The sixth grade boys did a terrific job on their individual country reports. We learned many interesting facts such as Ice-land ties with Israel on having the ninth longest life expectancy in the world. Jordan has Mt. Nebo, where we believe that Moshe Rabbeinu is buried and China has the largest population in the world! We can thank Madagascar for its vanilla production and Belgium for its chocolate. After completing a unit on Mesopota-mia, we are now in the midst of learning all about Egypt. We look forward to a hieroglyphics expert coming to educate us on the topic and a class newspaper assignment on Egypt will follow. By year’s end, our sixth grade students will be authorities on interna-tional facts. Mrs. Rosen’s Sixth Grade Science Class: The sixth grade students are rolling along like a rock down a mountain in their investigations and discoveries of what makes up the earth’s surface. They have been learning how to classify minerals, what their chemical compositions are, how to recognize minerals as well as their atomic structure and how it influences their appearance, beauty and strength. The students have also explored this information through a science lab using unknown rocks and discovering the rigidity and density of a specific rock. The girls’ class even named their own pet rock. All this is only a small part of the continuing journey about our earth. We look forward to learning much more about the earth by the end of the school year.

ECD HIGHLIGHTS

During Chodesh Teves, the kindergarten children will be trying to help rebuild the Bais Hamikdash by doing

lots of mitzvos and being kind to their friends. The class created a "Chaver Tov" chain, where acts of

kindness were recorded on strips of paper which we linked together to form a chain. Look at our mitzvah

children!

Rabbi Bacharach’s Kitah Daled: What an exciting Chanukah we had in fourth grade. Every day brought new excitement! We enjoyed learning the halachos of Chanukah on the first day of Chanukah. We loved being challenged on worksheets. We had to use a calculator to break the secret code. The next day we learned great lessons of Chanukah while watching a video of Chanukah stories by Rabbi Pesach Krohn. Wednesday was a blast at the YBH chagigah. The highlights were the Left to Right game and the animated dancing! Thursday's excitement was our own Dreidel Olympic game. We were challenged with games like Dreidel Marathon, Dreidel Ar-chery and Dreidel Ping-Pong. What a simchadik and memo-rable Chanukah we had! Rabbi Rothberger’s Kitah Gimmel: Like Yaakov, the third grade boys are on their way. Yaakov is travelling back to see Yitzchok and 3B-R is on their way to finishing Parshas Vayeitzei. Along the way, we learned about Yaakov’s escape plan, how he dealt with Lavan’s insults and how careful we must be when we use our words. In the process, we are mastering tense recognition, noun suffixes and translating pesukim independently. With the end of the parsha coming closer, a siyum and skit are sure to follow. There’s always something new coming down the road in third grade!

PTA CORNER A special thank you to Amanda Lyman for an amazing job

coordinating our fantastic ECD Pajama Party and to all the parents and children who joined us in our fun night.

A special thanks to Mr. Friedman for helping make it happen and to Sherry Schwartz, Dina Snitow, Morah Sara

Ringer and Morah Yocheved Klein for all their help and Morah Tamar Schock for reading the bedtime story.
