Dear Parents: In this week’s parsha, the Torah discusses the importance of Shabbos and its relation-ship to the מלאכת המשכן. As we know, the 39 prohibitions of Shabbos ( ט מלאכות‘‘ל ) originate from the Shabbos is the .מלאכת המשכןday of the week when the importance of קדושת הזמן (holiness of time) is highlighted. The משכן represents קדושת holiness of a particular) מקוםplace, as ארץ ישראל is to כלל As a nation referred to .(ישראלas גוי קדוש, we are given the opportunity to keep Shabbos and elevate ourselves through it. I had the opportunity to discuss this concept with our 7G students this week. I explained that Shabbos is not a weekly “snow day” but rather, as ל‘‘חז coined it, the מקור ברכה (the source of all blessings for the coming week). The Torah mentions the word ”וינפש“ (“and He rested”) when describing that Hashem rested on Shabbos at the time of creation. The Gemara says in is a וינפש that the word מסכת ביצהcompound word (וי נפש) or וי אבדה נפש, which means “woe to us that when Shabbos leaves us, our נשמה יתירה (literally: “our added soul”, which we receive on Shabbos) leaves us. We smell the בשמים during הבדלה to calm our souls for the departure of our נשמה יתירה.
The question is, why do we say the פסוק
“ושמרו...” , which ends with וינפש, at the onset of Shabbos (during our Friday night tefillah) and not at the conclusion of
Shabbos, when we bemoan the fact that Shabbos is over? The answer is very simple. It is important for every Jew to be aware at the onset of Shabbos that he will be losing his נשמה when it is over. If we lose יתירהa family member or friend, we often only realize what a great loss has occurred when it is already too late to appreciate them. With Shabbos, we emphasize the concept of וי אבדה ,וינפש ,when Shabbos begins , נפשso that we will utilize and appreciate the beauty and סעודת of Shabbos. The קדושה
is a time when the greatness of שבתShabbos is expressed. The דברי תורה, and appreciation of family is at its זמירותheight during that time. The next time we wish someone a “Good Shabbos”, let us think about what we pray it should be, for them and for ourselves as well. Good Shabbos to all! Rabbi Berel Leiner Menahel

LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE—GIRLS
Dear Parents, The morahs and talmidos of YBH returned to school from their mid -winter break refreshed and eager to resume their limudim. It was wonderful to once again hear the sound of learning emanating from the classrooms. I recently ob-served effective instruction as I enjoyed watching the second grade girls learning chumash. Morah Taub put the finishing touches to a lesson with the pasuk displayed on the Smart Board with color coded prefixes, suffixes and shor-ashim. Vivid pic-tures illustrated words of the pasuk. The girls acted out the phrases of the pasuk of the bris bein habisarim. As the girls pretended to be goats, rams etc. the pasuk came to life! Putting closure to a lesson is one of the key elements in effective instruction as it clarifies the lesson and aids the students in recalling in-formation. I also observed Morah Rabinowitz’s second grade class as they were introduced to a new pasuk in Chumash. They identified the shorashim, prefixes and suffixes of the pasuk utilizing previous lessons. It was a nachas to watch them as they decoded the transla-tion of the pasuk even be-fore their morah began teaching it! It was hard for me to differentiate between morah and talmidah during that exchange.
Another highlight of the week was a fantastic Brachos Bee, in which the first through eighth grade girls participated. It created a heightened awareness of the importance of reciting brachos and allowed for a solid review of hilchos brachos. Each girl received a booklet on hilchos brachos, which they reviewed with their morahs in school and at home over the last sever-al weeks. Many girls used the opportunity to review during the mid winter break.
Grades five through eight were given a test on the brachos learned and those who achieved the highest grades participated in a Grand Bee. Grades one through four also had a grade-wide Brachos Bee. As I told the girls, I had to go back to the store more than once to pick up addi-tional prizes, as there were many more winners than I had expected!! The morahs had a difficult time challeng-ing the girls. On Friday, Rosh Chodesh Adar I, the first through eighth grade girls were rewarded for their efforts with a sumptu-ous brachos breakfast. It was moving to watch the girls singing Hallel in harmony.
As the girls enjoyed their breakfast, we spoke about how important reciting brachos is, as it allows us to thank Hashem and recognize all the good He bestows upon us. On this note, the girls viewed a beautiful clip exploring the words from Nishmas: אין‘אנחנו מספיקים להודות לך ה We can’t thank Hashem enough. The breakfast cul-minated in a Grand Bee which involved grades five through eight. Their broad knowledge of brachos and
halachos made it difficult to eliminate contestants. Congratulations to our finalists: Chavi Sommer, Shayna Brenner, Zahava Giloni, Temima Bacon and Adina Schmidt.
Prizes were awarded to the girls who won the Grand Bee as well as the class wide Bees. As one morah so beautifully described the morning: “It was a nice and chashuv uplifting program that was both educational and enjoyable!” Have a wonderful Shabbos, Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern

ECD HIGHLIGHTS
Rosh Chodesh Adar Aleph:
As we looked out the window at our snow covered playground, it
became clear to us that it was the perfect day for some wintery,
snowy music and movement activities. Morah Kelly Teichman
entertained all the preschool classes as she reviewed
hibernation, penguins, winter clothing and more.
We enjoyed slipping and sliding on the ice, polar bear hugs,
penguin dancing and a hot cocoa song. We are now enthusiastic
about winter and snow. We do, however, apologize if our
enthusiasm is bringing on more snow!
Thank you PTA, for sponsoring this wonderful day.
A Peek Into Our Week:
Mrs. Buckweitz’s Second Grade Class: The girls wrote short stories about a great time they experi-enced during vacation and drew an illustration to accompany their writing. It is a pleasure to read their wonderful stories and see how much fun they had during their winter break. The children’s stories now hang outside our classroom. The class also enjoyed seeing a “Henry and Mudge” play at Montclair State College and the children wrote about their favorite part of the play which was shared with the class. In math, the girls are now subtracting two-digit numbers with and without regrouping. At the end of the month, they are looking forward to presenting their biography book reports in costume and to have their presentations video-taped.
The girls of Morah Koenigsberg’s Kitah Alef celebrated completion of learning writing script letters of the Alef Beis.
Mrs. Sommer's Fourth & Fifth Grade Math Classes: The girls enjoyed using their knowledge of fraction addi-tion to double and triple recipes to bake cookie bars. What a tasty application to the studied topic.
Mrs. Shinbein’s Second Grade Class: We have been very busy learning about the various forms of precipitation and the stages of the water cycle . We learned that water is one of the only materials that is a solid, liquid and a gas. We had such fun seeing our les-sons come to life in the science lab. In reading, our theme for this unit is changes: changes in our communi-ty, ourselves and our environment. Our students brain-stormed and provided many examples of changes in their everyday lives. At this point of the year, I am truly thrilled at all the awesome progress our Super Star Second Grad-ers are making.
Morah Rosenberg’s Kitah Daled: The girls of 'כתה ד sit at the edge of their seats as they learn about how יוסף is acting towards the שבטים. In
to מפורשים and learning רש"י they enjoy reading ,חומשanswer their thought provoking questions and unquench-able thirst for true knowledge. The excitement in the class is palpable. They have learned to translate many areas of נביא ,חומש and in באור תפילה on their own by figuring out the שרש and connecting it to its ראש and .מסיבה on a חבור they’re writing a ,עברית In .סוף מילהThey can write long sentences using a שם פעל ,שם עצם They are careful to make sure .שם תואר & פועלי עזרtheir שם עצם matches its תואר in זכר or נקבה. They’re also looking forward to our next באור תפילה חדון and are reviewing the translation of the next few ברכות in שמונה
.The girls have really come a long way .עשרה
Morah Goldberg’s Kitah Ches: Purim fever is in the air in 8G! We researched the Megillah in depth and the events that led up to the Purim story that we all know so well. We enjoyed discovering new events and information.
