Information Assurance •  IA education is supported across the college of

IS&T and the Graduate college –  Designated by NSA as a National Center of

Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAE IAE) since 2002

–  Degrees include •  BS in IA •  MS in IA with 5-year combined BS/MS option •  IA concentrations with CS and MIS

–  Non-degree programs and activities include •  MIS IA certificate

IA Education •  Program Started Fall 2000

–  Currently have about 100 UG students –  Currently 21 MS students –  Some students choose an IA degree

•  BS and/or MS in Information Assurance

–  Some students choose double majors •  IA and CS; IA and Math; IA and others

–  Some students choose an IA concentration in their major study

•  BS and/or MS in Computer Science with IA concentration •  BS and/or MS in Management Information Systems with IA

concentration

•  Course delivery includes lectures, labs, on-line, etc.

•  IA students work in special "STEAL" rooms (Security Technology Education and Analysis Laboratories) –  Generally self-contained, no Internet –  Includes workstations, servers, virtual machines, just

about any/all operating systems, cameras –  All users have Administrator/Root access –  General rule: What happens in STEAL stays in STEAL

Students

•  We participate in the NSF Scholarship for Service (SfS) program –  Have graduated 37 students through this program –  SfS students receive a two or three year stipend +

tuition from NSF (three years for an integrated UG/Grad degree or a PhD)

–  The students are required to do an internship with a federal, state, or tribal agency over the summers

–  They then do a “payback” by working for an agency on a year-for-year basis (e.g. two year scholarship = two years of work)

•  Our SfS students have gone on to: –  NSA (10) –  DOT Office of the Inspector General –  Army: Global Net, several others –  US-STRATCOM (4) –  Treasury Department –  Commerce Department (2) –  Air Force –  Sandia National Labs –  Lots of others
