Smyth announced Tuesday that she will not seek reelection next fall, after a 15-year career in which she played an instrumental role in the redevelopment of Tysons Corner. "It's truly been a pleasure to work with all of you, but this will be my last term in office," Smyth (D- Providence) told her fellow board members during a portion of the meeting allotted to issues that are not on the agenda. "I suspect this will be a busy year in Providence," she said. "We may have a lot of land use [cases] to finish up. So, I am apologizing in advance for all the work that may need to get done next year." County Board of Supervisors Approves Several Developments RestonNOW, Catherine Douglas Moran 12/05/2018 Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors approved changes to several developments at its Tuesday (Dec. 4) meeting. The board approved modifications to the Tall Oaks Village Center redevelopment. Stanley Martin's redevelopment plans to transform the Tall Oaks Village Center (12022 North Shore Drive) into a mostly residential neighborhood. The redevelopment is set to create 156 residential units, which include 42 two-over-two multi-family units, 44 single units and 70 multi-family units in two residential buildings. Harden12/08/2018When the 66 Express Lanes opened ayear ago, officials promised the tolls wouldmean a smoother ride on the interstate, amajor east-west thoroughfare fromNorthern Virginia into the District that isinfamous for its headache-inducingcongestion. The state's promise - lesscongestion and faster travel times duringrush hour - has been fulfilled for manycommuters able to pay or carpool, but the new toll system has had an adverseeffect for many of the remaining road users. For some commuters, the rush-hourperiod has simply shifted later - outside the toll hours - and dumped them onto aninterstate just as gridlocked as before. Some alternative routes have experiencedmore congestion from bailout traffic from motorists seeking to avoid the toll, andother commuters have longer trips into the city on Metro or have abandonedefforts to use transit because of inadequate facilities, according to a WashingtonPost analysis of data from state and local governments and transit agencies andinterviews with commuters.

Still, local and state lawmakersare celebrating the potential deal, which could include $1 per mile during off-peak hours. "We are heartened by the progress that has been made, and a dealis within reach," said state Del. John Bell (D). "This new agreement on the DullesGreenway will introduce distance-based pricing for 90 percent of the annualoperating hours. We appreciate the Greenway ownership working with allstakeholders to find a solution."
