He was lucky enough to be part of a local community where neighbours and friends support and have continued to help one another through generations. The Professor’s family have been in Thorney since 1770 where Job Bradford (his grandfather) started the company – Bradford’s Building Supplies from Thorney House. Professor Temperley was born in Cambridge of March 4 th 1915, son of Harold Temperley a distinguished Historian, Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge and Master of Peterhouse. His mother was Gladys Bradford, one of the first female fellows at Cambridge University. He was educated at St. Faith’s School Cambridge, followed by Eton College. In 1934 he went to Kings College Cambridge and was awarded a Doctorate of Science for his work on modelling underwater explosions, later becoming a fellow of Kings College Cambridge. SOUTH WEST FILM & TELEVISION ARCHIVE -

16mm Film - The Willow Story & Others from

The Male Family Archived.

“I’d like you to find the proper home for these and their preservation.” were Les’s words as he handed them over to us. Read on ...... A year or so ago Leslie Male handed over to the Kingsbury Time Travellers three reels of 16mm film which are now being stored under the correct conditions for their conservation in the South West Film & Television Archive. These reels of film were shot by Mona Chedzoy, sister of Gay, who is married to Les. Mona was born in 1914, the eldest of 8 children. The family’s mother died young in her 30’s, leaving Mona, as the eldest, to bring up the rest by leaving school at the age of 13 years. She went to Bower Hinton School and Bower Hinton was the place where the Chedzoy family had their business. After the Second World War in the early 1950’s, Mona became a member of the Chard Twinning Association, Chard being twinned with Helmstedt, Germany. It was through this involvement she became interested in recording, through film, her surroundings and its activities. She developed a life-long commitment to the spirit and purpose behind the twinning principles of cultural understanding and conciliation. She went on to obtain a degree in German and worked as a support teacher in schools. The Willow Story is an exceptional colour, silent, film which captures the Male family’s work of withy growing on Westmoor. Over a period of two years, Mona captured the whole process from planting out, to bringing in the harvest in boats, through to their boiling. She uses a gothic script for sub-titles. This is really a national asset, which captures the process together with such local people as Herbie Lock, Earle Male, Sam Talbot, Ewart Rogers, Audrey Male, Eileen Male, Janet Male and Les & Hugh Male. In its new home it will be available for generations to come and kept in appropriate conditions. The family has given the history group permission to make copies of The Willow Story available at a small charge. In due

St Martin’s Bell-Ringers On All Fools' Day (!) St Martin's team of church bell-ringers took part in the annual striking competition held by the Ilchester branch of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers, at another St Martin's Church - the one in North Perrott. In a striking competition, a bell-ringing team is judged on their ability to ring the bells with a precisely even gap between each "dong". It's not easy to describe in words but the sound of the bells should be "ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-dong". If the ringers' control of their bells is less than perfect, it can instead sound

something like "ding-ding .. dong .. ding-di-dong"! The Kingsbury band is not the most experienced band. They have been ringing together for less than a year, and half of the competition band are still in their learning phase - one has been ringing for less than a year. Given that there is usually only one practice opportunity each week, very few people develop to be really good ringers in much less than five years. Consequently, the team realised that a win was probably beyond their reach

this year, but they entered for the experience and for the fun of it and indeed, much laughter was had. They were delighted to be awarded third place over-all, and to be scored as the second-best novice team! The team is always delighted to welcome new ringers. Come along to any of their practices (7:30pm on Wednesdays) to get a taster - this could be your chance to play one of the world's loudest and most expensive musical instruments! Or call the Tower Captain, Nick Frost, on 01458 250994. Suitable for just about any age - from 10 to 80!

course we should be in a position to do so and perhaps they might be sold from the new Community Shop. Please keep your ears and eyes open for this opportunity. The second film, also from the 1950’s, shows, in exceptional colour, places Mona visited in Somerset to use in her visits to Germany. These places include Wells from the Cathedral roof, Shepton Mallet, the Bath & West Show, and Montacute House. Mona’s third film is titled “Helmstedt Exchange with Chard, South Somerset”. Easter Sunrise Service on Burrow Hill

Easter morning saw nearly fifty adults and children from the Methodist Church, URC, and parish churches in Kingsbury, Martock, and the Lambrooks, with a fine assortment of dogs atop Burrow Hill celebrating the resurrection of Jesus with a short time of worship, led this year by Philip Wagstaff, the Methodist minister. Those attending were in good voice with Bill Elliott reporting that the singing could be heard at Stembridge! It was a sunny, dry morning with a gentle freshness in the air so the chance to warm up with a hot drink or two and breakfast rolls at The Rusty Axe afterwards was very welcome for the nearly thirty who went back there. Thanks to Dave, Carol, and Nikki for being up early to serve our breakfasts! Please join us next Easter morning at 7am - the more the merrier!

Kingsbury Episcopi Parish Website Have you looked at the website yet? (www.kingsburyepiscopi.com) It has lots of interesting and useful information about our parish and its activities including local groups and clubs and a calendar of events in the parish. Unfortunately, if we are not kept informed as to what groups/clubs are running or what events are being held in the parish, the information is not always on the website. We rely on you the parishioners to keep us informed, so if you have an event to advertise or information on a group/club you run, please send your details to the clerk, Sarah Potepa on 01460 242369 or email [email protected]

Speedwatch—Volunteers needed It had been hoped to restart the Community Speedwatch group earlier this year. Unfortunately, because we have not been active for a few years we now need to retrain. This seems to be the ideal opportunity for volunteers to come forward to help with the scheme. At present, we only have a few volunteers and ideally we ought to have at least twenty names on the list. The more volunteers we have the better. If you feel that speeding in the parish is a huge problem please volunteer to help. Once trained you would probably only need to attend a session once or twice a month for an hour at a time. Initially I would like names of all interested parties. Please email the clerk Sarah Potepa, [email protected] If we have a good response I can organise for the chairman of the Community Speedwatch for this area to attend locally and give us a talk on how it all works.

Kingsbury Episcopi Community Centre

Kingsbury Episcopi Community Centre and Community Shop is well and truly open for business after an opening week that included a big breakfast followed by a family fun day, disco and fireworks, “past versus present” football match, a village history presentation by the Kingsbury Time Travellers, a tea dance, a food demonstration by Lynda Hollis, brilliant nights of music with Folk Americana from The Black Feathers and a

party night with covers from the Renegades. There were also taster sessions for the regular classes already booked to use the hall including everything from Pilates, HIIT and Insanity fitness classes to Jive, Latin and Ballroom dance classes. Kingsbury Community Centre is the culmination of 30 years of fundraising by YOU which meant we could put around

£250,000 of funds into the project. You have supported race nights, ate countless burgers and more recently supported the ever popular Party By The Parrett which takes place this year on the 1st of July. On top of your fundraising a lottery grant of £800,000 was also secured meaning we could realise our dreams of a community centre in the parish. The building itself comprises of a hall with a capacity of 120 for a seated wedding, meeting room, bar, kitchen which can cater for 120, 5:1 surround sound and theatre style lighting, projector and large screen, disabled facilities including toilets and shower room, changing rooms built to sport England standard and of course the community shop and cafe.

I would like to thank everyone who came along to my coffee morning on Easter Saturday. It was a huge success this year. With all your support, cakes and donations, you helped me raise £724.56 for the MS Society. Well done. Thanks

also to Adrian for entertaining everyone with his films of the village. It was enjoyed by all. Thanks and Best Wishes - Fiona Chick.

Award winning outside facilities include a playground, fitness machines, Multi Use Games Area and well maintained sports pitches that benefit from a drainage system making them useable all year round. The community centre is now open and we will be holding regular events such as cinema, music and dance nights and we are now taking bookings for regular classes, weddings, parties, business meetings/conferences and general hall hire with special rates for parishioners. Green Scythe Fair at Thorney Lakes Sunday June 11th (11am -11pm)

For those many of us who will be missing the Kingsbury May Festival this year, here is another event to look forward to – the organisers describe the day at Thorney Lakes as follows: “This is a magical one day environmental fair in a beautiful setting on the Somerset Levels run entirely by volunteers on wind, sun and muscle power. Excellent live music, over 70 stalls displaying traditional skills, crafts and produce, lively environmental debates, delicious organic local food, a variety of the best ales and ciders and a large kids area with activities throughout the day. The Green Scythe Fair includes the celebrated West Country Scythe Championship, known far and wide for

the stupendous and often hilarious feats of haymaking by international scythesmen and women, who mow a

swathe through the summer festival scene. It is probably the most authentic, and enjoyable, country fair in all England!”

Parish Litter Pick - Over the weekend of the 11th and 12th March a small group of volunteers met at Kingsbury Episcopi and East Lambrook to help clear the parish of litter. The whole length of Broadmead to Gawbridge, Stockditch, Hawthorn Hill to Gawbridge and Owl Street to New Cross were cleared. The majority of the litter collected was from takeaway food outlets as well as drink cans, bottles (glass and plastic) obviously thrown out of vehicles on the way home to either Kingsbury or Lambrook. In all we collected about 16 bags of litter which were left on Dudmoor Corner for collection by the District Council. It was extremely disappointing that only a few volunteers turned out to help. It only took a couple of hours on each morning to cover the area that we did, with more volunteers the whole of the parish could have been cleared. I would therefore like to personally thank the following who did help. Roy and Annie White, Corinne Short, Helen, Rebecca and Emily Woodfield, Rachel Knight and Sally Brooks (who attended both days). It is hoped that the next Litter Pick will be better attended, so please look out for the notice in the Parrett Talk and on the notice boards.

Parish Council minutes February A response had been received from the traffic engineer regarding our request for two additional sites for the 'Speed Indicator device' to be placed to monitor the speed of traffic. The sites being Bladon Hill, Kingsbury Episcopi and Owl Street in East Lambrook. The engineers have stated that there is not a suitable post within the 30mph limit on Owl Street to site it and the Kingsbury Episcopi sign post on Bladon Hill is too low. The Clerk is to respond as it is felt that if a SID can be placed low down on a similar post at Highway, Ash why can't it be placed on ours. Avon and Somerset Police have launched a new initiative on Rural Crime. There is a number to text if you see anything suspicious or any potential criminal activity, the number is 81819. Of course, if a crime is in in progress dial 999. A response has been received from the Rights of Way department at the County Council regarding our request for a Bristol gate to be placed on Pulpittsway to Stembridge footpath, in order to stop scrambler bikes and horses using the footpath to go down onto the moors. The response is that they do not feel there is a huge problem there so will not erect a gate but will put some signs up. It was reported that a new gate crossing had been made over the catchwater down over Hill Drove and that the catchwater was now blocked with stone/earth so water could not get through. The Clerk is to contact the Drainage Board. Cllrs were updated on proposed works at Deadlands. The work

will start at the beginning of March. The pipes that have already been put in by the Parish Council will remain but they will now concrete them in, reinstate the verge and finish the cross drains and storm drains. Some drains have been marked for work on Hill Drove, Stembridge, but as there are several drains that need attention first it is felt they need to be sorted out first before wasting money on the ones marked. The Clerk will contact Highways. March Concern was raised regarding the planning application at Thorney Mill. The dormer window had already been fitted, the height of the window is higher than what was approved and now means that bedroom and dining room at the Mill House can now be overlooked. Also a stainless flue has been installed in the roof which was not included in the original application, and as Thorney Mill is a listed building would assume that planning permission would be needed for it. Cllrs discussed the planning application for Thorney Mill and resolved that the size of the dormer window was not acceptable because of the impact on the neighbour and that the flue should have planning permission as well, they therefore objected to the application. The following grants were agreed. St Martin’s Churchyard for grass cutting £325. Portaloos for Party by the Parrett £600. Over 60's Christmas Party £200. St Martin’s Church Rooms for the upkeep of the car park £200. Cllr Brooks requested an increase in her fee for the grass cutting at the cemetery. She has not increased her fee for five years and as now servicing of the mower and fuel costs were on the increase she would be happy with an increase of £200 for the year. Cllrs were more than happy with the increase as she always does a sterling job of keeping the cemetery neat and tidy. Cllr Wakely confirmed that the Church would continue to maintain the actual churchyard. They were not looking for the Parish Council to take it on at this time. The new Community Centre is well under way and nearing completion. The shop container does have to be moved shortly, and as they had only received two low offers to buy the container it has been agreed that it would be given to the primary school for the children to use when carrying out outdoor pursuits. A request had been received for a public computer to be available at the building, this would be considered by the committee and Cllr Dowdeswell kindly said that he had a nearly new computer that he would be happy to donate to them. If the computer becomes a well used facility the Parish Council would consider donating a second computer. Steve Mason has kindly offered to refurbish the bench at the recreation ground as it is in need of rubbing down and revarnishing. Bob Warren and SCC have repaired a stile between Stockditch and Folly Road and the steps opposite the Old Vicarage had also been refurbished. A letter had been received from solicitors acting on behalf of SCC regarding the footpath between Pulpittsway and Stembridge as an application had been received from the Bridleways Association stating that the path had been wrongly classified as a footpath when in fact it should be a bridleway. The solicitor requests any information the Parish Council may hold from the 1950's when all Town and Parish Councils were given the task to mark a map of all footpaths that needed to be included on the definitive map. The Clerk has checked the old minutes and can see that the task was completed but we do not hold any copies of the map from that time, so cannot confirm which paths were included. The Clerk would send a copy of the minutes book to the solicitors and in the meantime would ask Bob Warren whether he has any other information regarding the 1950's map. The Clerk is to report a deep pothole half way down the hill towards Higher Burrow Farm and a broken storm drain cover outside of 2 Orchard Lane.
