A Recent LinkedIn InMail to Me

Hi Brad,

I'd like to thank you for the relevant information I have found in your webinar.

Also, I would like to suggest an idea that may challenge one of your points. I would welcome your feedback on it.

I recently made the decision to exclusively use LinkedIn as my resume. My goal is to concentrate my efforts on one single platform, instead of using all kind of different formats and languages as I used to be doing. Over the previous years, I have found LinkedIn to be in a league of its own, providing obviously a powerful platform to gather your professional contacts, communicate with your professional network regarding all your needs and opportunities; adding up recommendations, groups, etc. It is also possible to extract your profile in a pdf version and use it as your cv, as long as you make sure to synthesize your information on 2 pages, although I've found my industry to be very receptive if you simply send the link to your profile...If need be to highlight something specific to a job opportunity, I use an email as a cover letter.

As a significant investor in LinkedIn, my bet is that LinkedIn will become the international reference in terms of CV.

Any thoughts?

JF

The Video Resume

• If you are in an industry that will “get” it and your

video resume is professionally produced and on

topic and if the viewers have no technological

problems and you fit the “company mold” and you

don’t offend anyone in any possible way and you

have a really, really good reason to make a video

resume and a compelling script, then by all means

go for it.

• If you didn’t just say yes 8 times, skip it.

A Recent LinkedIn InMail to Me

Hi JF,

Thanks for attending my recent webinar.

I admire your evangelistic commitment to LinkedIn and you pose an interesting idea. My thoughts on this topic run in a different direction however. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on helping people achieve their goals. I’ve learned that in many cases, when one approach doesn’t deliver the desired results, that one should change the approach rather than the goal.

I often use an archery analogy when talking about job searches. I believe that one needs several different bows and a full quiver of arrows. Each type of bow serves a purpose as does each different type of arrow. The same is true here. LinkedIn doesn’t replace the resume, it augments it, as can a blog, personal website, other social media and maybe even a video resume. There are certainly organizations and people that are fine with a job seeker using a LinkedIn profile and there are those that will not be.

The resume is still the single most important document today in a job seeker’s quiver. It isn’t the only arrow but it’s the most trusted one.

Regards,

Brad

Some of my Thoughts

• If you can afford a professionally written resume

it will be the best investment you make in

yourself

• The opportunity cost of using a bad resume can

run in the tens of thousands of dollars

• More and more job seekers are getting

professional assistance making the job search

climate hyper-competitive

• Good enough doesn’t cut it anymore

Some of my Thoughts

• You can of course, get away with sending a bad

resume to a less desirable company but is that

really your objective?

• If you cannot afford to have your resume done

professionally seek help elsewhere. Oftentimes,

State Career Centers, local libraries, and some

job fairs have assistance available

• Remember that job search expenses are usually

tax deductible but check with your accountant
