From the Rabbi
As I write this article, we are in the midst of counting the Omer. Each night between Passover and Shavuot, we recite a blessing and count. I like to think of it as a giant count-down, or actually a ‘count-up’ (since we add a number for each day) to experiencing Divine revelation and to receiving the Torah at Sinai. Originally, the Omer was a harvest-offering brought to the Temple on the second day of Passover. From the day when the Omer was brought, seven weeks were to be counted, and on the 50th day a festival was to be celebrated (Leviticus 23: 15-21). This festival was later called Shavuot, “the Feast of Weeks” (because it falls on the day after the seven weeks have been counted). While traditionally, the Omer was a period fraught with anxiety and diminished joy, I think of it in a different light. Counting the Omer from Passover, which celebrates the exodus from Egypt, until Shavuot, which celebrates the giving of the Torah, establishes an important link between these two holidays. As free people, we remind ourselves of the bondage in Egypt, and count each day toward the even greater freedom enjoyed by those who live by the Torah. The idea of counting each of these days represents spiritual preparation and anticipation for the giving of Torah at Sinai, and for the continual receiving of Torah. When viewed through this lens, the Omer period offers us the opportunity to contemplate the role of Torah, Jewish tradition, and Jewish values in our lives. How can we continually make Torah in the broadest possible sense the core to our lives? How will we deepen our connection to our beautiful tradition? What Jewish subject do we want to study? What Jewish ritual do we want to try? These are similar to the questions we often ask ourselves as we prepare for the High Holidays, but rather than wait until the end of the summer for this type of introspection, I encourage you to ask yourself these questions and to begin to answer them during the Omer. This year, Shavuot begins on Tuesday evening, May 14. We will begin our celebration with a Tikkun Leil Shavuot – an opportunity to study and learn together. Please join us for about an hour of study and snacks beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the social hall. Our Shavuot celebration continues with services on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 a.m. in the downstairs Daily Prayer Room, when we will read the Ten Commandments from the Torah, and again on Thursday, May 16 at 9:30 a.m. in the upstairs sanctuary. During this service, we will recite Yizkor. I hope you will be able to join us as we celebrate Shavuot. Rabbi Jaymee M. Alpert

On May 9 Leo Frank will be one hundred years old. I've known him for nearly 30 of those years. We first met at a minyan one morning at KTI. In those days, KTI had a minyan every morning and every evening. He would come in the morning, pray, then get in his car and go to work. Working in Man-hattan, it was difficult for me to attend the evening minyan, but when I did, Leo was there. He was one of the “Minyanaires”. Simple arithmetic tells us that at that point he was already over 70. Leo was an active participant in the services; his voice was heard leading prayer, responding to Kaddish, having aliyoth. He was always friendly and outgoing and had a bright, welcoming smile on his face. He made KTI feel like home and reminded me of the shul I grew up in. Leo is still showing up, still participating in the service, as gabbai, or leading morning prayers, still making me feel at home. On May 4 we will honor him with an aliyah and do our best to convey to him the warmth, gratitude and joy we feel in having him there, as usual, joining us in prayer. B'Shalom. Bill Alper President

When I was a little girl, one of my fondest memories was of running around the synagogue. I would crawl up onto the side of the bimah and run around, but also I would listen to the cantor and try to imitate his beautiful davening. When I was a little bit older, that cantor invited me to join in his children’s choir. The experience of taking a special role in services was thrilling for a young girl who loved to sing. I took my role very seriously, and I loved the responsibility and recognition involved in enhancing the prayer service. Though this was a choir, it was also a lot more than that. It cemented my personal connection to the synagogue, to prayer, to meaningful song, and to my broader Jewish identity. It was the first stepping stone, I believe, in making me the cantor I am today. Back in February I had the privilege of returning to my home town, to the synagogue where I grew up and sang in that choir, and singing alongside that same cantor who inspired me so many years ago. I was the guest performer in a concert that featured music of all kinds – show tunes, opera, Hazzanut, Israeli, and more. What a joyful experience it was to return to where my calling first began for me. I was even lucky enough to have a few of our KTI snowbirds come to hear me there. This magnificent event truly came full circle for me and helped me to realize what a vital role my childhood foundation made in my spiritual life. As a Cantor, I only hope I can translate that same inspiration to the next generation. To begin this process, I am starting a youth choir here at KTI. Look out for bright, young singers at the High Holidays and beyond, and prepare to be inspired by their enthusiasm for Jewish expression!

KTI Religious School
This was a very fast school year! A year that was filled with amazing learning opportunities. Looking back on this year our school had many wonderful programs and events which included Class Shabbat morning services, Got Shabbat!, J-Time, the Purim carnival, the Chanukiyadah, Rosh Hodesh It’s a Girl Thing, The Brotherhood, Bet/Gimel Friday Night Dinner, Nosh and Drosh with the Rabbi, Music with the Cantor, Kol Habama dance troupe, the Gadna program and our Bechira! I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful faculty; Jeff Siegel, Ayala Rybak, Talia Marcus, Yona Ashany, Karen Stamatis, Ruchama Schechter, Helene Wurtzel, Rabbi Alpert and Cantor Sklar for their tireless devotion in educating our children. I would also like to thank our Religious School Board; Len Blum, Bethany Engle, Bruce Greenbaum, Sandi Kornblum, Alyce Mariam, Susan Naveran, Joanie Rosenbaum, Missy Sternthal, Shari Savitt and our Religious School co-Chairs, Nancy Kansler and Andrea Neuman for their guidance and sense of responsibility to ensure that our children receive the best education possible. I would like to take a moment to personally thank Nancy Kansler and Andrea Neuman who have stepped down from their positions as co-chairs. Nancy, Andrea thank you for your hard work, leadership and dedication. I would also like to take this time to welcome Shari Savitt into her new role as Religious School Chair! I would like to thank Missy Sternthal and Sandi Kornblum, our PTO co-chairs; for their support and work whenever we needed them. Thank you for being behind-the-scenes and making events and programs run smoothly. And of course I need to thank Rita, Brian and Kevin for all of the unseen work that goes into the events and special services and programs! Without their help nothing would get done! Enjoy your summer vacation. Recharge your “batteries,” have fun either away at camp, on vacation, or simply in the backyard! I look forward to next school year, to the many special events we have planned and those yet to be planned. Rabbi Sandy Zisser Director of Education

K.T.I. Early Childhood Program
The ECP has had a busy three months. In February we celebrated Purim with our journey to Shushan. The children dressed up in costumes and had fun pretending to be Queen Esther, King Ahashuerus and even evil Haman…Boooo! They also enjoyed making and eating delicious hamantashen!
Passover came early this year and in March teachers began to retell the story of when Jews were slaves in Egypt. Through songs and art projects, children learned all about this important time. They enjoyed stories with Rabbi Alpert and songs with Cantor Sklar. Our two’s classes began to learn about all the rituals of Passover. The three year old classes entertained their parents and grandparents with the ECP favorite performance of “PASSOVER… The MUSICAL”! The four year old classes held their Seders in the classrooms. They cooked and prepared everything by themselves…they were so proud! They made Haggadahs, Seder plates, and matzos covers. Parents and grandparents were invited to visit their classrooms and share this special time with them.
Even though the children were busy with holidays, they still enjoyed visits from our friends at Animal Embassy, Yoga and Mad Science. They also got to run, jump and play with visits from Steve Stone. Spring is finally here and our new, much bigger vegetable and fruit garden is being prepared. Look in back of our playground area! Soon children will be planting fruits and vegetables with master gardener and 2’s teacher Fern Kaplan… we will be watching all the sprouts appear!
Next week we will be celebrating a trip to Israel for Israeli Independence Day. The ECP children will board an airplane and take a “flight” to Israel to “visit” a few cities there. In an artist’s colony at Safed, they will make beaded bracelets; in Eilat they will enjoy the sun and fun of the beach; in Jaffa, they will taste the juicy oranges from the famous orange groves there and plant flowers at a kibbutz. They also will visit the western wall and tuck a prayer between the stones. Then, they will “return” home to KTI!
We have a lot more special days planned before the end of the year. We are looking forward to our school art show and a special Friday night Tot Shabbat service in May.
Enjoy the good weather and tune in for our end of the year news. Robin Goldberg ECP Director
