Jab tackle and block tackle
Why:
To assist players with their body positioning and tackling technique, and to promote the basic principles of defensive.
How :
Tackle boxes set up towards the left and right side of the head of the circle. After completing each tackle box, attackers join the queue of the alternate tackle box. Jab and block tackle boxes to be switched to the alternate side mid-‐way through the drill so that each technique is practised on both sides of the pitch. 1. Jab tackle box • Attackers start at the blue cone and carry the ball towards the defender with
the aim of getting through the green gate. • If the attacker is successful, they are allowed to go on and shoot at goal. • Whether successful or not, the attacker then joins the queue awaiting their
turn at approaching the block tackle exercise. • Defenders are alternated every 6 to 8 turns.
2. Block tackle box • Attackers start at the yellow cone and carry the ball towards the defender
with the aim of getting through the red gate. • If the attacker is successful, they are allowed to go on and shoot at goal. • Whether successful or not, the attacker then joins the queue awaiting their
turn at approaching the jab tackle exercise. • Defenders are alternated every 6 to 8 turns.
3. Back to Basics • Remove the shooting element of the drill and get players to work in pairs
with a basic tackle box. Attackers and defenders to swap every 6 turns.
4. Progression • Increase the percentage of the attackers work/speed to the appropriate level.
Coaching Points:
1. Jab Tackle • Jab tackler must stay on the balls of their feet, balanced and keep their
distance. • Jab in and out quickly back to start position (think of a lizard’s tongue flicking
in and out). • Two hands on stick apart from actual ‘jab.’
2. One-‐handed Block Tackle • Basic grip. • Do not get the stick down early (immobile in this position), but tackle at the
last moment. • Stick at right angles to the line of the ball. • Use the shaft of the stick. • Scan for passes.
3. Two-‐handed Block Tackle • One-‐handed grip. • Can use right or left hand, depending on the distance needed to reach.
• Jab first, then lay the stick flat on the floor, tackle at the last moment.
