Jakarta as The King of Flood

Jakarta as the King of Flood
Most of tropical country always suffer from flood in rainy
season. That horrible disaster can happen with only some hours of
heavy rain. The flood is worse if the water from rain couldnt flow
through the waterways. Usually that condition happen in a big
cities like Jakarta where garbage are everywhere and building
constructed carelessly. Those condition make Jakarta become the
King of Flood. This essay will analyze the cause for this and
analyze the effects of it.
There are many causes why Jakarta always suffering from flood
and became the King of flood. The first cause is Jakarta has poor
urban planning. We can look at the rapid development in the city.
Many tall building constructed in every area in Jakarta, as long as
there is an empty land the building will be constructed. The poor
city planning of Jakarta could lead the next causes why Jakarta
always suffering from flood. The next causes is Jakarta has really
bad and small drainage. Rifig, Head of Water Resource Maintenance
Affairs of DKI Jakarta said that flood in Jakarta usually happen
because of the small capacity of drainage. The drainage could not
cover water from land area in Jakarta (Garbage Worsens Jakartas
Drainage, 2012). An urban planning expert, Yayat Supriatna also
said that there was no improvement in drainage system since the
Dutch colonial era (Indonesian capital Jakarta hit by deadly
flooding, 2013). The situation is getting worse when in the
drainage is blocked by garbage. Many garbage are dumped into the
river by the citizen. This problem caused by poor waste management
and lack of peoples awareness about environmental cleanliness.
From all of those reason, the main problem is water could not
flow through the waterways. Rapid development of city building make
the government has difficulties in building proper waterways or
canal to reduce the water that trapped in land. Few and small
waterways make the water from rain trapped in land. The situation
is getting worse because water in the waterways is blocked by
garbage. Thats why only few hours of rain Jakarta can be
flooded.
In conclusion, the main reason of flood in Jakarta is because
the water cant flow to the right place. The terrible condition of
Jakarta flood make it become the King of Flood in Indonesia.
Government should make a good regulation of city development and
build good drainage system. Besides that, Jakarta people should
have awareness in environment cleanliness.
