Happy New Year! Have you made any resolutions? And if you have, have you thought about how you are going to keep them? That’s really the hardest part of resolutions, isn’t it? To be successful, a resolution has to be a commitment to changing your life forever. It’s that “simple.” Decide to change your life… And do it…

Review of the 2013 Budget:

The 2013 income and expenditures were reviewed and then projections for the remainder of the year were estimated. While there may be overspending in some spending line items, we estimated the 2013 expenses

will be ~$10k less than budgeted—due mainly to under-spending in several line items . Some 2013 income line items fell short of the budget but overall income is expected to be slightly higher than budgeted.

The 2014 Budget:

Based on the stewardship campaign, income (pledges and gifts) are down by

~$28K. Expenses for 2014 are budgeted based on projected 2013 spending levels resulting in reductions to several line items. At this point, we don’t have a balanced budget and are facing an estimated $30k shortfall. The vestry delayed the decision to approve the budget until it can be reviewed again in March 2014.

Around the Parish and the Diocese

Flower Guild

Thank you to everyone who purchased poinsettias . Your generosity made it possible to decorate our worship space for joyful Christmas celebrations as well as provide support to the ARC Gateway Folks in Pensacola from whom we purchased the truly beautiful poinsettias.

The poinsettias are available to be taken home, so please select yours.

The 2014 flower chart is located in the narthex, please sign up for sponsoring altar flowers on your special Sundays throughout the year. the cost is $25.00 and payment envelopes are available on the chart and can be placed in the offering plate.

A sincere Thank You to all for your support making it possible to have beautiful altar flowers the year round, and to those on the flower guild who give so generously of their time and talents. If you have interest in joining the guild, Carolyn Igo would love to talk to you, 939-9604.

January Birthdays

Lenten Meditations

Each year, the parish members write a daily meditation booklet as a ministry to one another for the season of Lent. This booklet is a way that we can keep Lent together, as a community, by sharing our reflections with each other.

Ash Wednesday is March 5, so we have to get busy! It would be great to have them available by Sunday March

2, so it would be a big help if you could take an assignment from the narthex and finish it by February 23.

Please remember when you take an assignment, to put your name on the chart on the date you chose. That way I know who has what!

PLEASE email your submission to [email protected], and THANK YOU!

Coffee Hour

Diane Klutz is chairing an effort to revive a fellowship and coffee hour

after the late service. If you are willing to help with ideas, logistics and so on please email her at [email protected].

Supper Club 2014!

Supper in New Settings, the parish supper club, will get started for the year on January 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the parish hall The monthly gatherings for food, fun, and Christian fellowship are a good way to become close friends with other members of the parish that you may not have met or known well before.

This get-organized meeting will be pot luck. Just bring whatever you want: salad, dessert, side dish, meat, or appetizer. If we have more than 16 people, we will form smaller supper club groups by drawing names out of a hat, or basket, or beer stein or something!

So sign up in the Narthex and come to the parish hall on January 18. Questions: Call Libbi Crowe at 582-7261or email [email protected]

Special Collections

January: White Sale

Let's start the new year with a white sale, not linens but paper towels and toilet paper. Those are vital commodities that are not covered by SNAP ( Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) formerly known

Page 4: January 2014 1 Canterbury Tales Canterbury Taless3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/3186113/2014-01.pdfSt. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church 7810 Navarre Parkway

as Food Stamps. For that matter, cleaning products, soap or personal hygiene products are not covered either but are greatly needed.

It is a good and wonderful thing to have frequent special collections for items not covered by SNAP or not stocked at the food bank but please do not forget food items either. Just one extra can every time you go to the grocery store might not adversely affect your budget but could make the difference between a child having something to eat or going to bed hungry.

Our local stores have BOGO ( buy one get one free) items every week. If it is something that you use often, you would be paying the regular price but have an extra one to share. If it is something that you do not use, you would be doubling your contribution to the food bank. Either way it is a bargain with the bonus of a blessing.

SML January 2014

It is hard to believe that we have a brand new calendar year but it is true. It is 2014!!! Our classes had an exciting December, preparing for our Lord's birth, welcoming the Holy Family into our homes and sharing the good news through Christingle. We did not complete our Jesse Tree but we did learn about God's careful planning through the ages in using ordinary folk to foster Jesus during his time on earth .

This month we will follow Jesus as he grows and prepares for his ministry.

We will talk about Mary and Joseph's bravery and obedience as they fled to Egypt to protect Jesus from Herod's wrath. We will learn about the Wise Men who traveled from afar to pay homage to the Christ child but who returned to their countries by a different route to confuse Herod.

We will talk about Jesus as he grew and was baptized and began his ministry. We will study Jesus but we will also talk about the everyday people with whom he lived and walked and laughed and learned. In the beginning of this new year, we will speculate how we too can make a difference everyday in the lives of those around us.

Annual Meeting Results

At the 2013 Annual Parish Meeting, Libbi Crowe and Eric Straight were elected to the Vestry. In addition, we elected convention delegates, who are Sid and Linda Gray and Eric Straight. Alternates to the convention are Diane Klutz and Sarah McCarren.

Below are show biographies of our new vestry members:

Eric W. Straight

I am a cradle Episcopalian. I attended church and school at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1985 I moved to Berstadt, Germany where my step-dad was stationed with the Army. After he left the military we moved to Christiansburg, Virginia where I attended St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church. I also earned my Eagle Scout rank with Boy Scout Troop 77 in Christiansburg. After graduating high school I enlisted in the

Air Force. My first duty assignment was Hurlburt Field, Florida in January, 1990. I have lived here since with a short tour to Korea in 1997-1998. I joined St. Augustine’s in 1999. I have worked with the Rite 13 youth group, served on Vestry as Junior Warden, attended Cursillo, serve as an Acolyte and Usher, and I am currently the Charter Organization Representative and Scout Executive for Boy Scout Troop 106 which is sponsored by St. Augustine’s. My wife, Alethea and I met at St. Augustine’s and were married in the Church on November 5, 2005. We have one child, Lucas.

Growing Up Special

By Ginny Brown

This little true story is written to honor one of our own young people. She has spent her Christmas holidays every year helping the needy in our community.

It all started when she was four years old. She’d just been in a Christmas pageant and still wore her precious little costume – a long burgundy velvet dress with white fur trim, and a white fur halo. Her parents had heard of the Caring and Sharing activities and, of

curiosity, had stopped by the school on the final day of preparation. They were immediately “hooked” and started filling toy bags. You’d think a four-year old would latch on to all these toys and start playing with them. But no! OUR four-year old spent the afternoon enthusiastically holding bags open while her parents filled them!

This year, she was there again, all grown up and filling toy bags with her sister. Her name: Jessica Thompson.

(I guess I ought to add – her parents are Tony and Ann Thompson. They stayed “hooked” and have over the years, become the prime movers and shakers of the Caring and Sharing movement. Ann has been President for the past nine years.)

Good on you, Jessica and Tony and Ann! Our whole community is enriched. You have blessed us all!

Caring and Sharing 2013

More than 280 families, including teens, children and infants received help to make their Christmas more full and fun. Once again the non-profit’s goal to provide help was met, a ray of optimism through their giving of food, gift certificates, clothing vouchers, all packaged with cheer and Christmas gifts for those in genuine need during the holidays. St. Augustine’s, with the true meaning of spirit, togetherness, and kindness participated to help make a difference in the lives of about 1100 clients, who found themselves in financial straits this year. You need to know you may

have touched a life, possibly changed a heart, and brought a smile to a child-the face of the future.
