Principals CornerHAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank you foryour holidays wishes before the break.I hope you enjoyed time with loved

ones. As we begin 2015 I wish youlots of health and happiness.

There is much still in front of us thisschool year so please be sure to readthe Columbus News each month.

Now that January has arrived, we askthat ALL students (Grades K through 5)enter the building in the morningthrough the one main entrance off theplayground. We will no longer have K

students enter through individual class-rooms. Anyone arriving after 8:40ammust be signed in as tardy in the mainoffice. We thank you for helping usstart the school day on time.

The evening of January 12th bringsexcitement to all the Medford Elemen-

tary Schools. That is the night we willwatch the Celtics play. It is even moreexciting for five lucky Columbus stu-

dents who are invited onto the court tohigh five the Celtics. Our winners

are: (Back Row) Rudolph Ross, Timo-thy Connolly, Jayden Wright. (FrontRow) Maria Sacchetti and Quinn

Dufour. Congratulations to these luckystudents. GO CELTICS! Special thanksalso to the PTO for organizing this spe-

    cial event.

Congratulations to ALL our fifth gradestudents for writing wonderful D.A.R.E.essays in December. The photo-graphed winners were asked to sharetheir essays with our families: KachieEzeani, Lynn Georges, Oscar Ruan, and Katharine Schmidt, photographedwith Officer Iozza, Officer OKeefe, and Chief Sacco.

May their ideas long serve as remind-ers to make the right choices as we

step into 2015. Wishing you a happy, healthy year!

    ~Ms. Kathleen Kay

AssistantPrincipals CornerI hope your December break was restful. Iknow New Years is a time for making reso-

lutions. I cannot begin to count how many

resolutions I have broken. It always beginswith good intentions, but seems to easilyslide by the wayside. I am sure many ofyou can relate to this problem. Daily stress-es add up and we are soon back to our oldhabits. This year I decided to skip making aNew Years resolution and instead make adaily one. In this world of instant gratifica-tion I thought this strategy might be morebeneficial for success. Daily goal meeting

will help to encourage me to continue thenew behavior, which may lead to anotherday and so on. Maybe a daily resolution

could be something you try with your fami-ly. Ideas: Talk about your childs day on

the way to school; Turn off the cell phonewhile in the car with your child(ren); Eatdinner meals as a family and share a high-

light from your day; etc. Your full attentiontowards your child makes a positive differ-ence. Lets give it a try and good luck.

    Have a healthy New Year.

    ~ Mrs. Sherman Hudson

    Roots Music Collective

Through the generosity of the Columbus

PTO and the Medford Arts Council all the

children at the Columbus Elementary School

participated in a special music program on

    December 11

    th

titled Roots Music Collective. The students were

led on an adventure which explored global influences and social forces that shaped American

popular music. This interactive performance kept the students interested and

dancin in their seats as the visiting musicians illustrated how the music of

early African-Americans evolved from work songs and spirituals that led to

blues jazz country and eventually rock n roll.

Here are a few photos from the performance.

Thank you PTO and Medford Arts Council .

Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. byDoreen Rap-paport.Ages 5-9.In this elegant pictorial biography of Martin Luther King Jr., author Doreen

Rappaport combines her spare, lyrical text with King's own words for an effec-tive, age-appropriate portrayal of one of the world's greatest civil rights lead-ers. From King's youth, when he looked up to his preacher father and vowedone day to "get big words, too," to his death at a garbage workers' strike ("Onhis second day there, he was shot. He died."), Rappaport imbues the story withreverence.Acclaimed artist Bryan Collier depicts his subject with stunning watercolorand collage illustrations, balancing glorious recreations of stained glass win-dows with some of the more somber images of peace marchers and the famous

bus that pitched Rosa Parks into the civil rights movement. A brief chronology and bibliography provideadditional resources for readers. Here is an exquisite tribute to a world hero. ~ Emilie Coulter

    OOK REVIEWS

Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boyby Gary D. Schmidt Ages 9-12."Both beautiful and emotionally honest, bothfunny and piercingly sad."Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Turner Buckminster hates Phippsburg, Maine. Then he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, a smart, sas-sy girl from a poor nearby island communi-ty. Lizzie introduces Turner to the wonders ofMaine's coast. But the two soon discover that the

town elders, along with Turner's father, want toforce the people to leave Liz-zie's island to start a touristtrade there. Based on the truestory of a community's de-struction, this sensitivelywritten novel highlights aunique friendship during a

time of change, and wasawarded both a NewberyHonor and Printz Honor.

    Ring Around the World
