This is my final edition of the Bugle as editor and I am delighted to be able to hand it over to Susanne Nichols, who will be taking over as editor from February.

I have immensely enjoyed my time running the Bugle over the past five years, and as the Bugle celebrates its tenth birthday in September am sure it will enjoy continued success under Susanne’s editorship.

This is the thirtieth edition of the Bugle I have compiled; there have been some fantastic articles contributed by the various community groups over the past years and I would like to thank everyone who has submitted an article, story or photograph.

There has, admittedly, been fewer submissions in the past year and I would encourage all readers, especially those involved in community groups, to submit more.

Thank you all. •

The March edition of the Benwick Bugle will be produced by your new editor, Doddington Road resident Susanne Nichols.

Susanne was born in Munich, lived in Berlin for 10 years before moving to Benwick in 2012. Susanne studied IT and ran her own marketing agency before moving to the UK.

She lives with husband Phil and their three year old Weimaraner, who seems to be well-known in the village! You may know Susanne and her husband from their regular dog walks in the village. Apart from walking her dog, Susanne is into good food, loves books and loves village life.

“I can’t wait to get to know more people in Benwick and keep you informed about all the big and little things happening around us” Susanne said. •

Benwick Ladies Club have enjoyed another successful year with a variety of speakers and outings.

We finished off the year with our Christmas party when the drink was provided from club funds and the nibbles brought in by members.

During the evening the Christmas quizzes were organised by Sheila and Penny reigned supreme with the most correct answers. (We will all be fighting to be on her team in the future)

The letters competition came to the end for this year and Pauline S was the winner with the most points. These were awarded by members voting by putting a coin next to their three choices. The money collected will be donated to FACET in March.

The programme for 2016 is not yet complete but we already have a good mix of activities. Our main news is that we are moving our meetings to the third Thursday in the month but we will still meet from 7.00-9.00.

BENWICK LADIES CLUB

by Brenda Richards

So far our programme is January 21st collection of fees and social time ie catching up on gossip.

February 18th is earmarked for our annual dinner. The first speaker for the year on March 24th will be coming from Skylark Garden Centre when the topic will be Spring Flowering plants for Gardens and Containers.

Already booked for later in the year we have a speaker relating some of the customs of Fenland from years gone by. There is also an artist visiting when we will have a chance at some printing.

Finally I would like to invite any new members wishing to join us to just come along. Fees are £25 annually, visitors £3 or visitors £3.50 for catered evenings.•

Our annual bingo was held on Thursday. 5th November which was well supported. Prizes, all of a Christmas theme, were donated by members. The caller was Dennis Clarke.

On 13th November some members went to Soham for a variety show which included Dana, an Irish singing star and a cream tea was served during the interval. Another outing in November was on the 25th when members and friends had a trip to Norwich.

Some people went to the Van Dal shoe factory shop where many bargains were purchased. If two pairs of shoes were bought a third pair were free. Then everyone spent the afternoon in the city Christmas shopping.

The Christmas dinner was on Thursday, 3rd December which was attended by 55 members and friends. We were again fortunate in obtaining a grant - £750 this year from the Burnthouse Farm Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund towards this event.

FORGET-ME-NOTSThis is really appreciated as it helps tremendously towards the cost. The four course meal was provided by A & M Catering of Whittlesey and the entertainment by Mike Gee, a singer and comedian.

Anne Wall, chairperson presented gifts to Marie Andrew, Tarina Louch, Kathleen Green, Yvonne Baker, Dennis Clarke and Ernie Foiuntain for their help during the year and in return members gave Anne, Janet and Olive, the officers, flowers and chocolates.

There is no meeting in January therefore the first meeting in the New Year will be on Thursday, 4th February when the annual business will be conducted and subscriptions due.

This will be followed by a speaker, a solicitor from Huntingdon who will tell us about wills, lasting powers of attorney, inheritance tax and care home fees and other legal affairs. The competitiion is any item beginning with the letter J.

If you are 55 and over, male or female you are very welcome – come and join us. The annual membership is just £6.

Interested? Please call Janet on 01354 677228.•

Children in classes one and two told the story of Manger Mouse; who lived in a stable in Bethlehem at their nativity performance.

The children sang brilliantly and danced with enthusiasm, delighting the audience. Thanks were expressed to all the Children and Mrs Wood, Miss Garner, Miss Whitehand, Mrs Few, Mrs Fiore and Mrs Thompson who put the whole production together. •

Janet Fountain, Kath Green, Tony Green and Barry Marshall have been reminiscing. Back in the 1950s-1970s almost all of the men, boys and some women had nicknames. Here are some of those they remember or were told of by their parents.

Despite freezing weather people still turned out to enjoy a range of craft stalls, a visit with Santa, Uncle Mick’s Punch and Judy and a hog roast.

At the event were the Pig Dyke Molly’s and Midwinter Mummas, along with stalls including specialist cheeses, fudge and preserves.

The day was organised by the Benwick Residents Association.

Lyn Keppel-Spoor said: “The weather was terrible but it didn’t’ dampen people’s spirits. Everybody who came along had a good time.” •

DICKENSIAN MARKET

Lots of opinions were shared at the Parish Council meeting in January about the lack of a Christmas tree in the village. An update from the police highlighted a problem of number plate thefts and hare coursing outside of the village.

County Councillor John Clark reported to the Council that services to the village are likely to be reduced following the latest budget cuts, with Fenland Councillor Butcher reporting that cut backs will be looked into at the District too.

The precept (Parish Council Tax) has been set with a 1% increase for 2016/17. The Council is still investigating options for improvements at the park, with two funding bids having been applied for.

A £100 donation was made to Benwick in Bloom; if your organisation wishes to apply for a small grant, contact the Parish Clerk.

The Parish Council meets on the first Monday of each month in the Village Hall with time set aside each month for residents to any issues. •
