The decision to partner with FHEG was made by the SXU Board of Directors because of the group’s potential to enhance the way the bookstore provides for students. “We’re confident that Follett, who has demonstrated a strong ability to drive new programs, will positively impact our classrooms and the communities they serve,” stated Christine M. Wiseman, Saint Xavier University President. Because of this, beginning on March 11, Follett will take over management of the bookstore. The partnership with FHEG is expected to bring in over 8,000 publishers’ resources to the use of students at Saint Xavier, as well as access to Follett’s online resources at www.efollett.com. Through this website, students will also be able to make purchases online. Students at SXU will also be able to rent textbooks through Follett’s Rent-A-Text program, a popular program that saves students an average of 50 percent on textbooks. According to a press release in SXNews, the program is reported to have saved students throughout the nation more than $300 million. Through Follett, students will also be able to access more textbooks digitally. Students are hopeful of the anticipated changes in terms of more affordable materials. As of current, many SXU students choose not to purchase their books from the bookstore due to cost, one of them being Alexis Medina, a sophomore nursing major. “I actually don’t buy my books from the bookstore because of the simple fact that they are expensive. I go to the library and scan my books or borrow books from others,” Medina said. Many of the students who do purchase their books are unhappy with high prices of their required texts. “I feel like people would buy more books from the store if prices were cheaper instead of going to Amazon, Chegg and eBay,” said Medina. Pat Stepp, a sophomore biology major, stated that, although he purchases his books from the bookstore, it does not sit well with his budget. “I think that [this change] would be better for students, because a lot of people complain about how much books cost,” said Stepp after being informed of the coming changes. Medina also showed excitement for the coming changes, as they would allow her new opportunities towards her major. “I’m pretty excited for the new changes because I can now buy my own nursing books and keep them,” Medina stated. The Xavierite Regina Hall Receives New ResCenter Joshua Humphry News Correspondent On January 15, Residence Life unveiled the new ResCenter in Regina Hall’s Lobby. The redesigned space replaced Figaro’s, a pizza shop that had occupied the space until the end of the fall 2011 semester. It had sat in a state of translation for two semesters while the university decided how to renovate the space. After the two semesters of inoccupation, the space was finally renovated. The end result: a place intended as a space where students can hang and chill after class. Where the ovens and serving counters of Figaro’s once stood, there is now a small, unraised stage, the Center Stage. This new Center Stage is capable of hosting a variety of student activities ranging from small scale improv shows, musical performances, open mic nights, or speakers. Slightly to the rear of the Center stage, where students used to line in droves for pasta twice a week, is a multipurpose area. This an area where students can do anything from eat their lunch to study or play a board or card game with their other SXU students. The space is equipped with improved lighting, a printer, a scanner, and a bunch of circular The new Center Stage (left) and and a pool table (right) in the new ResCenter in Regina Hall. The Xavierite tables and chairs. The main area of the space (right in front of Center Space) is also occupied by tables and chairs. However, there is also both an air hockey and a pool table for students to enjoy during their down time. A 62” TV also dominates the room and is fully equipped with a Nintendo Wii, complete with several new games that can be checked out. Another new feature is a new sound system to which a variety of electronic devices can be hooked up to including iPods, laptops, and DVD players. The space also saw upgrades to the vending area which became the Snack Center, a small side room equipped with microwaves and vending machines carrying a variety of snacks and microwavable foods. All resident students are able to visit and enjoy the ResCenter. In a press release, Thomas Christopher, president of Follett Higher Education Group stated that FHEG looks forward to working with the university. “We’re excited to be serving Saint Xavier University,” Christopher stated. He continued, “At Follett, we’re committed to driving student success and we look forward to working with Saint Xavier University to identify solutions that make course materials affordable and accessible for students.” Changes to SXU Intranet Colonizing Mars?

History on Celluloid

Ifyouarethekindofpersonthatgoestothemoviesalot(likeme), thenyouknow that it isnostrange occurrence to seemaybetwoor three trailers that containthewords:“Basedonatruestory”. For somepeople thismeansthat the film being advertisedis an almost documentary stylepresentationofthetruth. While I amnotdiscountingthe amount of people who arewell aware of the boundary thatliesbetweeninterpretationofthetruth and the truth itself, I havecomeacrossquiteafewpeoplethatseem tonotbe able tomake thedistinction. I had this experience lastNovemberwhenthefilm“Lincoln”cameintotheaters.Ihadnumerousdiscussionswithpeoplewhohadseenthefilmandquiteafewpeopleremarked, “You actually thinkthatDanielDay-LewisisAbrahamLincoln.Helooksandsoundslikehim!” Wait…huh? He looks andSOUNDSlikehim?Iwould lovetoknowhowthatparticularfriendknowswhatthe16thPresidentoftheUnited States sounded like, considering the fact thatLincolnlived in the age before recordedsound. I amwell aware thatDanielDay-Lewisheavilyinvestigatedthemannerisms andmechanics ofPresidentLincoln in preparationforwhatcouldbehisthirdOscar-

winning performance; includingtrying to replicateLincoln’svoicewhich is often referred to byhistoriansasbeing“reedy”and“ahightenor”. Butisn’tabitpresumptuoustosaythatDay-Lewisnailedexactlywhat Lincoln sounded like? Itis a great performance, which isprobablywhysomanyareeagertosay thatDay-Lewis nails Lincolnperfectly, despite the fact thatweknownothingofthephysicalandvocal characteristics of good ol’HonestAbe. But while Day-Lewis hadmuchhistoricalcontexttogooninordertoprepareforhisrole,Oscarwinning screenwriterMarkBoal(“TheHurtLocker”)hadverylittlehistorical record to go onwhilecrafting his screenplay for “ZeroDarkThirty” – a gritty depictionoftheeventsinbetweenthe9/11terroristattacksandtheraidonacompoundinPakistanthatwouldleadtotheeventualdeathofOsamabinLaden. ChicagoTribune film criticMichael Phillips hailed the filmas the best of 2012 and “a firstdraft of history”.While I willagreewithMr.Phillipspointthat“ZeroDarkThirty” is a rich andfulfillingmovie, complete withthrillsateveryturn,Idofinditabitpresumptuoustocallthisfilma“draftofhistory”. There are scenes in “ZeroDarkThirty”thatringwithtruth–especiallythewonderfully/brutallyexecuted films featuring torture– but there is somuch that wedon’t know about the binLadenmanhunt and raid carried outby the stillmostly nameless andfacelessSealTeamSix.

I wonder still how manypeoplewilltakethewordswrittenbyBoaltobegospeltruth.Iamnotdiscountingthehistoricalcontextthatfilmscangivetheiraudiences. Fo r e x amp l e , G eo r g eClooney’s brilliantlywritten anddirectedfilm“GoodNight&GoodLuck.”providesitsaudiencewithajarringpresentationoftheparanoiaandfearthatmanyUnitedStatescitizens probably felt during theyearsofMcCarthyism. WhileeverywordofClooney’sscript(co-writtenbyGrantHeslov)maynotbetrue,certainlythespiritoftheworkistrue;samegoesforTony Kushner’s “Lincoln” andBoal’s“ZeroDarkThirty”. That is ultimately what isimportantwhenafilmclaimsthatit isbasedona truestory. Not ifit records history as it happenedword-for-word,but if thespiritofthematerial rings truewith thetimeperioditisreflecting. Sometimeswhenafilmtriestorecordhistoryitendsuplosingsightoftheimportantaspectofthespiritoftheeventsitisrecording. Such is the case ofMichaelMann’s“Ali”–afilmthattriestotake its audience into every backroomconversationthatthefamedboxerMuhammadAlihadduringhisprime. The film becomes a stalerecitationofeventsasopposedtoa coherent narrative. While I’msureMichaelMann can claim alot of the things that happen inthe film “Ali”mirror that of thelife of the real Ali, he cannotboast a successful film (with thenotable exceptionof thebrilliantperformance ofWill Smith inthetitularroleandJonVoightas

HowardCosell). Again, thereinlaysthetrickydistinctionofentertainmentfromaccurate information. Perhapsthat’swhysomany films thatarebasedon truestories leaveeventsout or overly dramatize them;sometimes history only makesperfectsensewithanarrativearchrunning through things to jointhemtogether. (One exception that I canthinkofisRonHoward’sbrilliantlyexecuted“Apollo13”;duringthatfilm’s production Jim Lovell’sinsightandconsultingwasusedingreatfrequency.) Yet, there are people whohaveahardtimeseparatingsheerentertainment from adelivery ofinformation. AnotherfriendofmineuponviewingQuentinTarantino’sWorldWar II pulp-fest “InglouriousBasterds” was livid and angry, insistingthatthethingsTarantino

put on screen never actuallyhappened. Iwillnotspoiltheendingofthefilmforthoseofyouhavenotseen thepicture – shameon youthathaven’t–butthefilm’sclimaxisobviouslyhistoricallyinaccurateandthat’sthepoint. Tarantino’s pulp fest isobviously an exception. Fewfilmmakers would dare to bendhistoryinsuchablatant, yetboldway in the same vein asQuentinTarantino. Films canbe a great tool toshowtheattitudesandspiritofahistoricalevent, butseldomshouldtheybebelievedasabsolutetruths.Ijusthopeonedaymykids(shouldthat day ever come) don’t walkup tome and tellme how theylearnedAbrahamLincoln endedthe establishment of slaver, wontheCivilWar,restoredtheUniontoitsfullestANDkilledvampires.
