Essential Questions: How do you measure success?

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the geography and history of the United States.

Essential Question: What are the consequences of technology?

We will begin this unit looking at the Fertile Crescent and the beginning of civiliazation.

The Revolution

Essential Question: When is war justified?

We will be looking at the causes and events of the American Revolution for Independence.

I do weight my grades for academic classes as follows: Tests/Projects = 40%

Quizzes/Homework/Classwork = 35%

Notes/Participation/ = 25%

This does make it so that you can’t add up their total number of points and divide it by the total points possible and calculate a correct grade. Please email me if you have any questions.

This week we will begin a new unit on the novel Iqbal and also begin to analyze poetry.

In addition, students will spend time learning new vocabulary words in their Rev It Up work-

books. 1/8/16: Vocabulary Lesson #11

7th Grade

This week we will begin a new unit on the novel Enrique’s Journey and also begin to

analyze poetry. In addition, students will complete assignments in their Word Wisdom work-

books. 1/8/16: Vocabulary Quiz Unit 4 Part 1

8th Grade

This week we will begin a new unit on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird and also begin to

analyze poetry. In addition, students will complete assignments in their Word Wisdom work-

books. 1/8/16: Vocabulary Quiz Unit 4 Part 1

7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, and Geometry with

7th Grade Math will work on similar shapes and scale drawings, geometric drawings,

cross sections, and angle relationships.

8th Grade Math will be solving systems of linear equations by graphing, solving sys-

tems by substitution, and solving systems by elimination.

In Geometry we will apply the Pythagorean theorem, use the converse of that theo-

rem, use similar right triangles, and work with special right triangles.


6th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra with

6th Grade Writing- Students will build background knowledge before reading I am

Malala. We will read the first few chapters this week. Students will be required to summarize

the chapters we read and respond to discussion questions in two different packets. These

can be found on Google Classroom. Students will also review the grammar concepts/

questions that many students missed on the final.

7th Grade Writing-Students will build background knowledge before reading The Diary of

Anne Frank. We will watch a documentary about her life and then begin reading her diary and

chapter's from a biography. Students will be required to summarize the diary entries we read

and respond to discussion questions in two different packets. These can be found on Google

Classroom.

8th Writing: Welcome back! In writing this week, we will be working on summarizing skills by

writing an exposition summary of The Book Thief. We will focus on organization, and select-

ing the most important details for a summary. We will be writing and revising these this week.

They will likely be due next week and will need to be submitted via Google Classroom.

6th Grade Math- We will begin the new year by looking at benchmark percents, frac-

tions and decimals. We will complete lessons 8.1 and 8.2 this week.

8th

Grade Math- We begin the new year by looking at systems of linear equations.

This is a big concept for 8th grade that you will see again and again. Basically, we will

compare two equations by graphing, substitution and even adding and subtracting

them. We will complete lessons 8.1 and 8.2 this week.

Algebra- We begin the new year with Chapter 7! We will get into rational exponents,

polynomials and powers of ten. We will complete lessons 7.1-7.4.

Community Service Grading

2.5 new hours each quarter in addition to the hours required the quarter before

To receive a 100%, students should have a total of 2.5 hours at the end of 1st quarter, 5 hours at

the end of 2nd

quarter, 7.5 hours at the end of 3rd

quarter, and 10 hours at the May 11th cutoff date

for 4th quarter.

Until the previous quarter’s requirements are met no new credit will be given.

Students will receive 20 points for each completed half hour of service in the quarterly require-

ment. Additional half hours are credited to the following quarter up to the 10 hour requirement. Once the 10 hour requirement is met the student will receive a 100% for that quarter and all follow-ing quarters.

A log (available in Mrs. Hughes’ room) must be completed for each month’s service and turned in

to Mrs. Hughes’ room.

Partial half hours will receive no credit. Hours turned in after the quarterly deadline will be counted

toward the total in the next quarter.
