JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD J I S

Oil Based Caulking Compounds for Buildings A 5751-1975 (Reaffirmed: 1983)

1, Scope

This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies oil based caulking compounds ( ’) to be applied for the joint portions, the space filling around sashes and to mend the cracks of buildings, hereinafter referred to as the “caulking compound”.

Note (l) Caulking compounds are classified into such two groups as gun caulking compounds and knife caulking compounds or especially as for summer use or for winter use.

The units and numerical values given in { } in this standard are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI ) , and are appended for reference,

Remark:

2. Crude Material and Manufacturing.

The caulking compound shall be manufactured from mineral filler (such as asbestos, calcium carbonate) and liquid extender (such as natural or synthetic oils and fats or resin) as principal material by well-mixed into uniformness.

These raw materials and manufactured caulking compounds shall be free from those injurious to men and beasts.

3. Quality

3.1 The caulking compounds shall have the appropriate workability and shall be free from affecting steel, aluminium and others which come in contact herewith.

3.2 The caulking compounds shall not have remarkable colour difference com- pared with the specimen which is prescribed by the agreement between the parties concerned.

Fill up the water to about fullness in vacant portion of the ring by the use of a burette, cover ( 5, with the upper board and add water until no air bubble have been seen more in the interior. Find the poured water quantity VI (mi) from the reading the burette.

Discard the poured water, remove the upper board, place three pieces of specimens within a desiccator (240 mm in diameter of middle board) of 45 k 3 % ( 6 ) humidity, let alone for 15 days and find also similarly the poured water quantity v2 ( m i ) .

Find the contraction S (%) of the sample from the following formula:

Rem ark :

At this time it is preferable to seal from the outer side of the lower board and ring with grease so as not to leak water.

When covering with the upper board, carry out so as to slide upon the ring, however, never press from above the upper board.

In order to maintain the humidity at 45 i 3 %, it is preferable to use saturated potassium carbonate solution.

When the test device is weighed before and after filling the sample in the ring, the weighing of the sample enables to find the apparent specific gravity of the sample. existence of vacant space is to be capable of being checked.

The gypsum square bar shall be dried at a temperature of about 40% to a constant weight before being used for the test.

(4) Cleanse the filling table in compliance w i t h 4 . 4 . 1 (2 ) .

Note ( 7, To be those of Grade A specified in JIS R 9111.

4.5.2 Test Method

Carry out the filling by the use of a spatula or a knife carefully so as not to let stain the upper surface of gypsum square bar. the equipment so as to let the caulking compounds come in contact with the moulded surface side of gypsum square bar.

In this case, set

In this case fit the fixing bed so as to be fixed by being engaged into the groove existing in the pulling device.

Test Tube and 105 mm in length.

This shall be of those about 15 m m in outer diameter

Test Method

Wash well the outer surface of a test tube with a hanger at the top as shown in Fig. 6 , dry and then apply the sample in a thickness of about 3 mm as shown in Fig. 6.

Pour about 300 ml of saturated calcium hydroxide solution of Grade 1 specified in JIS K 8575 into a polyethylene beaker and hereinto hang the test tube in the approximate m i d d l e of the beaker so as to let the lower sample immerse by 3 cm into the solution.

After being immersed for 15 days, cut the sample to strip off and observe the adhesivity to the glass. Accept the case where there is no difference between the adhesivities of the upper and lower samples seen.

Remark: In case where no alkali resistance is especially needed, the test may be omitted.
