debate is an altercation of words, but not to the people whose world is in politics.

Apex

• Definition: highest point; summit• POS: Noun• Syn: Peak• Ant: Valley, base• Sentence: After reaching the apex of

the mountain, we decided to head back down a different way.

Ballyhoo

• Definition: to write in a way that makes people get excited in something

• POS: Noun• Syn: Propaganda, announce• Ant: hide• Sentence: There is much ballyhoo over

the Super Bowl, especially during this time of year.

Bona Fide

• Definition: Made in good faith without fraud or deceit; genuine.

• POS: Adjective• Syn: kosher• Ant: counterfeit• Sentence: The purse was bona fide; it

was made from real snakeskin!

Caucus

• Definition: A closed meeting of members of a group united to promote a cause, issue or idea.

• POS: Noun• Syn: club, or unit• Ant: individual• Sentence: “There is a whole caucus of

people meeting about your new homework policy Mr. Po!” I anxiously said.

Disdain(n)

• Definition: a feeling that someone or something is bad, worthless or low; scorn or contempt.

little brother for wrecking his BMW on his first drive.

• Definition: to have or show a feeling of scorn or contempt.

Dulcet

• Definition: Sweet melodious; soothing. • POS: Adjective• Syn: harmony• Ant: harsh • Sentence: Much of Beethoven’s music

was dulcet and harmonious; it sounded very lovely and soothing.

Expunge

• Definition: to strike out; to erase to remove.

inappropriate word in his essay.

Flamboyant

• Definition: Ornate, showy or flowery• POS: Adjective• Syn: dazzling• Ant: dingy• Sentence: As soon as we entered the

flamboyant house, the sight of all the dazzling flowers hit me; there were towering, extravagant floral displays in every room.

Malleable

• Definition: capable of being shaped or formed.

art project with clay, but my blob of clay was hard, and not malleable, so I had to use another piece.

Meander

• Definition: to follow a winding and turning a course or path.

Meticulous

• Definition: Show great concern for detail; extremely careful or precise.

• POS: Adjective• Syn: careful• Ant: lazy• Sentence: Bob wasn’t as meticulous as

he should have been, therefore he almost got cut on his finger.

Swarm

• Definition: a large group of insects or small creatures in motion.

• POS: noun• Syn: mob• Ant: solo• Sentence: When the animal control

person hit the hives, a whole swarm of bees came flying after him and didn’t stop until he jumped into a pond.

Translucent

• Definition: Allows light to pass through, but not clearly, a distortion occurs.

• POS: Adjective• ANT: Transparent, clear• SYN: semi-see-through• This curtain is translucent; the

neighbors can’t see in, but light is allowed in.

the cobra is a rare herb that is only found in Australia.

Bolster

• Definition: to strengthen, to support.• POS: verb• Syn: assist• Ant: prevent • Sentence: To bolster my exhausted legs

after the marathon, I took an icy bath- literally.

Candor

• Definition: honesty, and sincerity• POS: noun• Syn: loyalty• Ant: deception• Sentence: I think that sometimes,

grown-ups take children’s candor for granted, even though they should not.
