devise different curricular activities that take advange of the advanced programs and capabilities of the new technology. We also established a teacher leader position in the area of technology so that teachers can receive the necessary training to use the new equipment and to learn about new educational resources for their individual classrooms. With the addition of Chromebooks for our Middle School students, our children are afforded new educational possibilities.

In addition to developing our children’s critical thinking skills and academic strengths, we also focus on their character development. As part of this effort, we partnered for the first

time with Understanding Our Differences, an organization that helps students become more aware of, and comfortable with, people with disabilities. This is just one of the ways we prepare our children to meet and collaborate with people different from themselves with empathy, confidence, and openness.

I delight in the fact that each year our students, along with our teachers, continue to grow and

to learn. These advancements, however, are only possible with the support of our generous donors. Your help is essential to this sacred endeavor. Thank you for your ongoing partnership and your support of our school. We, together, can be very proud of the different ways in which we have improved and strengthened our children’s educational experience in the last year.

B’shalom,

Dr. Susie Tanchel Head of School

From its inception, JCDS has been a school committed to innovation and growth for its students and ongoing learning for its faculty. We are continuing this legacy each year as we find new ways to enhance our academic program.

Well-known educational thinker, Roland Barth noted, “Teachers and students go hand in hand as learners —or they don’t go at all.” A critical part of improving the education our children receive is to invest in the professional development of our faculty, which we have done in the areas of Tanakh and technology integration this past year.

Last fall, we joined a two-year initiative, entitled Standards and Benchmarks, run by the Jewish Theological Seminary and supported in part by the AVI CHAI Foundation, to strengthen our Tanakh program. This initiative focuses on new methods for lesson planning, instruction, and assessment. Some of the early results of our teachers’ work include strengthening the school-wide arc of our Tanakh curriculum, clarifying our content choices, creating developmentally appropriate goals and assessments for each grade level, and increasing collaboration among our K-8 Tanakh faculty.

Our teachers are also collaborating more in the area of educational technology. While we do not view technology as a panacea for all that ails education, we do believe that it is an important tool in the hands of teachers. With the addition of iPads for each of our teachers, they are now able to even better differentiate their instruction. For example, in first grade math, some students use iPads to practice their math facts while the teacher explains new concepts to other students. This equipment also allows teachers to

Along with the JCDS Board of Trustees, I want to express my great appreciation to our head of school, Dr. Susie Tanchel for the level of collaboration and trust she has established with our board. This excellent working relationship allows both Susie and the board to work in concert to solidify the mission of our wonderful school. Thank you for your commitment to JCDS and your generous support of our institution in 2013.

Last year continued to be a year of growth and reflection for JCDS. From the planting of trees and plants by the school entrance to the enhancements and national recognition of the school’s science and technology program, JCDS was a vibrant and energetic place to be in 2013!

JCDS Annual Campaign

JCDS relies upon the loyal and generous support of parents, community members, alumni, grandparents, and staff to cover the school costs that tuition does not. We are very pleased to report that last year, 96% of our parent body participated in the Annual Campaign effort, with a $63,621 increase in dollars raised compared to last year. These funds are key to support the substantial commitment to financial aid and financial diversity at JCDS, as well as to support and enhance programs throughout the school. We give special thanks to our team of many loyal and dedicated Annual Fund volunteers, led by parents Marion Menzin and Yonina Hoffman-Wanderer.

Generations Endowment Program

Two years ago, JCDS was one of six local Jewish day schools selected to participate in an endowment program, Generations, run by Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), and the AVI CHAI Foundation. The goal of this program is to raise funds through endowment gifts to JCDS. These important funds will provide a steady, reliable stream of income for JCDS. Building our endowment will help ensure economic diversity in our school, provide opportunities and salary support for our exemplary professionals, and allow us to maintain and improve our facilities. There are few other investments that

can produce returns as meaningful as an endowment gift, and we all urge you to consider this gesture to JCDS.

Affordability

The JCDS Board of Trustees remains deeply invested in examining tuition affordability and ensuring the socio-economic diversity of the school. We continue to work with national foundations, schools, and thought leaders to find ways to reduce costs and ensure that as many families as possible can afford Jewish day school tuition. A cost and affordability task force, comprised of members of our finance committee as well as several community members, continues to look carefully at finding creative ways to work on affordability, while ensuring the long-term health of the school.

Strategic Plan

Last winter, Dr. Susie Tanchel and I asked board member Stephanie Listokin to lead a new strategic planning process to provide direction and insight for the school for the next three to five years. This work builds upon a strategic plan that was presented to the school community in 2009. Along with a larger strategic planning executive committee comprised of parents,

community members, alumni, and staff, this group has begun to refine our vision for the future of JCDS. The working groups for the strategic plan have begun formulating benchmarks and standards for several key areas, and are busy interviewing staff, parents, and community members. We expect to provide a final report to the community in the spring of 2015.

Thank you for your generous and enthusiastic support of JCDS. Our unique community day school continues to thrive, and we appreciate and relish the support from so many of our parents and community members.

At JCDS each child is known by the faculty and administration. A culture of caring teachers, parents, and peers supports the high aspirations of our hard working students. This Whole

Child approach leads to students who grow to be the best version

of themselves.

JCDS fosters curiosity, cherishes varied perspectives, engages

students and welcomes every family as a partner. Intentional Pluralism

embraces families from a broad range of Jewish expression, practice, and

belief through our shared traditions,

texts, and language.

In the cutting-edge Hebrew instruction program, JCDS students experience and

learn in both Hebrew and English Throughout the Day in a single,

integrated curriculum, which connects our teaching units across disciplines and

between Jewish and General studies.

JCDS is a Joyful Jewish Community that learns and celebrates together in

rich, colorful, and meaningful ways. The creative community spirit and school mission go well beyond the

walls of JCDS, for events like life cycle celebrations, Shabbat meals,

and weekend soccer games.

The JCDS course of study is rigorous and intentional, yet flexible and

personalized. Academic Excellence is built on strong skills, citizenship,

and Jewish literacy set in a nurturing and relaxed atmosphere.

Sounds of children learning flooded the hallways all year long: students asking each other questions, reading verses of Torah, and singing favorite Hebrew songs. Highlighted here are five programs from the 2013-2014 academic year that most exemplified each of our core values.

Gateways, Boston’s central agency for Jewish special education, recently received a grant from the Ruderman Family Foundation to bring the Understanding our Differences curriculum to Jewish day schools. The curriculum is designed to help children be inclusive and accepting of differences without fear or anxiety, and to “see the person and not the disability.” JCDS is fortunate to be one of the first participants in this important program.

Last Spring, JCDS third graders participated in Understanding Our Differences units on deafness and hard of hearing, as well as blindness and low vision. During both units, students learned about the anatomy behind related conditions, and were exposed to different adaptive technologies that are used to assist in daily activities.

Each unit had a Jewish component, encouraging compassion, tolerance, and derekh eretz (ethical living). As Elke, now in fourth grade, explains, “In a way, we are all deaf or blind. If someone is gossiping about you and you don’t know about it, you can’t see or hear it. It’s the same thing.”

Understanding Our Differences

Lower School Assessment for LearningJCDS Lower School teachers have embraced an “assessment for learning” model in literacy classrooms as a means of improving teaching and learning. This model, which is also called formative assessment, allows teachers and students to collect data regularly to provide continuous feedback and to adjust ongoing lessons and strategies. To start, the teacher determines which reading strategies his or her students are ready for, and then demonstrates these strategies. The students then read independently while the teacher meets

with individuals or small groups of students to see how they are applying the strategy to their reading. At the end of the day, the teacher looks at the results of the independent

reading conferences and uses this data to determine what should happen the next day in class. Do some students need more practice? Do some students

need to have the strategy explained again? As the students mature, the responsibility of assessing work becomes a partnership. This model

supports students in their development to become self-directed, lifelong learners.

The Purim Carnival was completely designed and run by JCDS Middle School students. The project was originally presented to the students as a way to contribute to the joyful Purim atmosphere, but it quickly evolved into something much more complex. As booth concepts began to develop, the students had many considerations to discuss: What safety measures would be necessary for booths that involve potentially dangerous elements? How would the games be set up fairly so that all students have an equal chance of winning? How would they address food allergies for booths with edible prizes? On the day of the carnival, it was clear how much work was put into each game. As seventh grader, Ilana, put it so simply, “teamwork makes the dream work!”

JCDS STEM Day is an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math. This past March, students participated in an entire day of developmentally appropriate, hands-on workshops that explored different topics and professions including urban design, neurogenetics, dentistry, robotics, and chemistry. At the end of the day, the students were treated to original raps about science by keynote speaker and alumni parent, Dr. Jonathan Garlick.

STEM Day

Purim Carnival

Fluency & Tikkun OlamAt JCDS, Hebrew is taught through meaningful and age-appropriate materials. The philosophy behind this teaching approach is that when students experience the context in which they are learning Hebrew as engaging and challenging, the vocabulary becomes a vehicle for authentic communication. As part of the seventh and eighth grade Hebrew curriculum, students looked at examples of other people’s dreams and aspirations, such as Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who is known for her activism for rights to education for women. Then, the students learned about the steps and planning that go into creating a non-profit organization. At the end of the unit, the students created their own non-profit concepts and presented to their peers in Hebrew.

The financial strength of JCDS has once again improved over the prior year. Many factors contributed to this: increased enrollment, reduced mortgage payments and debt service, and increased philanthrophy. Our enrollment of 206 students is strong and stable.

The success of the Krupp Challenge, which generated gifts and pledges totalling $3 million three years ago, continued to enable us to reduce our mortgage payments last year and this benefit will remain for the next two years. Cash received from the Krupp pledge payments allowed repayment toward our principal mortgage of an additional $300,000 in 2013. Debt service, as a percentage of total expenditures, has declined from 16.2% for 2011-2012 to 8.0% for 2013-2014. While the Krupp Challenge made a significant impact on the reduction in debt service, its achievement increased our position to re-negotiate and reduce its interest rate from 5.27% to 3.6% through the efforts of our former treasurer, Michael Bentley. We remain very grateful for his efforts. Contributions at JCDS have increased total giving (unrestricted, temporary restricted, and permanently restricted) by more than $220,000 over last year’s totals. The mortgage principal has also declined by $494,449.

The JCDS Statement of Financial Positions also shows positive improvements. Cash on hand and investments increased by more than $350,000. Consistent with other small, nonprofit institutions, and with the counsel of our Finance Committee, these additional liquid assets will, for the first time ever, provide a safety net to fund needed emergency repairs to the building or equipment without having an impact on the educational program. For example, the heating and air conditioning systems are more than fifty years old and, as such, are nearing the end of their useful lives.

In summary, the improved financial strength and steady enrollment allows JCDS to cultivate a vibrant academic program, invest in our faculty’s professional growth, and make the necessary repairs and improvements to our building.

Matters of TasteLike the JCDS community, our signature fundraising event, Matters of Taste, was warmly personal, full of variety, and intellectually stimulating. We are eternally grateful to longtime JCDS parents, Noni and Izhar Amony, who not only chaired the event, but have also contributed to JCDS in countless ways over the years. The Armonys organized over 200 guests who dined at 18 dinners at 18 fabulous homes with special guests including:

• Evan Falchuk, Founder the United Independent Party• Adam Grossman, VP of Marketing and Brand Development for the Red Sox• Reyna Simnegar, Persian Kosher Cookbook Author.

Matters of Taste provides essential support to the JCDS Annual Fund, which enables JCDS to maximize support to families attending our school, to enrich our outstanding academic curriculum — including a cutting-edge Hebrew proficiency program and a new K–2 STEM initiative — and to create a joyful and vibrant environment where students, teachers, and parents alike come together to celebrate a love of learning and Jewish values. We thank the host families who opened their homes, and the speakers who inspired us while we delighted our palates, fed our minds, and supported JCDS in the process.

Savor the date for this year’s Matters of Taste: Sunday, March 29, 2015! Please visit www.mattersoftaste.org for additional information.

Made Possible by You

We are pleased to have donors who give generously to an array of curriculum areas. Our children benefit greatly from the many volunteers who give of their time, passion, and energy.

Math Related iPad AppsOne significant gift last year introduced specific math related iPad apps to our first grade class. The apps allowed the students to get instant and individualized feedback for each child. With the use of this tool, the teachers had extra time to meet with students individually to assess and support their learning.

Electronics Elective ClassAnother donor provided the necessary items for our electronics elective class to assemble a computer and begin assembling a 3D printer. The students who participated in this special project benefited from this new opportunity for active learning.

Through Your Participation...We are grateful for our many dedicated volunteers who provide invaluable service and make our fundraising activities so successful. Last year, the parent campaign reached 96% in participation. We greatly appreciate all the individuals who helped with our athletics and afterschool programs. We could not hold Matters of Taste or Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day without the chairs and volunteer teams who help make these events enjoyable.
