THREE LITTLE WORDS
To succeed in college, I only have three words of advice
for each and every student:
GO TO CLASS
This is the most important action students take for themselves.
Attendance is the first step to class success. When asked why a student did
not do well in class, faculty first look at the student’s attendance. Faculty
members say lack of showing up for class is a prime reason for failure.
So, my advice is to use your time wisely by making it a goal to attend
each class and lab session. I know students have many demands of family,
work and other obligations but now is the time to put your education first
and devote your time to the classroom. It will payoff greatly in the future!
Good Luck This Spring,
President Laura Meeks

TIPS TO FINDING A JOB
Whether it is a part-time position while attending college or a full-time position, adhere to the rules below. It does make a difference!! Employers responding to a survey said more than half of their hiring managers said the most common and most detrimental mistakes made include:
Dressing inappropriately for the interview
Speaking negatively about a prior employer
Appearing disinterested
Appearing arrogant
Being non-specific in answering questions Not asking good questions CareerBuilders.com’s Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources, said successful candidates:
Do their homework, researching the company and what it does.
Don’t get too personal; keep the interview professional and don’t share unnecessary personal information.
Be honest and outline steps you would take to find answers to questions you can’t immediately answer.
Be ready to answer open-ended questions such as “Tell me about yourself;” “Why do you want to work here;” or “
What motivates you.”
Don’t be negative about previous jobs or employers no matter how much the interviewer pushes for negative responses. Generate a positive attitude. If you would like assistance on interviewing skills, interviewing questions or assistance with a resume, stop in the EGCC Career Services Office and see Judy Miller, Director of Career Services and Alumni. Dear EGCC Student:
We want to take this opportunity to give you a brief summary of your rights under The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the federal law that governs release of and access to student education records. These rights
include:
The right to inspect and review your education record within a reasonable time after the College receives a request for access. If you want to review your record, contact the College office that maintains the record to make appropriate arrangements.
The right to request an amendment of your education record if you believe it is inaccurate or misleading. If you feel there is an error in your record, you should submit a statement to the College official responsible for the record, clearly identifying the part of the record you want changed and why you believe it is inaccurate or misleading. That office will notify you of their decision and advise you regarding appropriate steps if you do not agree with the decision.
The right to consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in your education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with “legitimate educational interests.” A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official has “need to know” information from your education record in order to fulfill his or her official responsibilities. Examples of people who may have access, depending on their official duties, and only within the context of those duties, include: college faculty and staff, agents of the institution, students employed by the institution or who serve on official institutional committees, and representatives of agencies under contract with the College.
The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with the requirements of FERPA.
Release of student record information is generally not at done Eastern Gateway Community College without the expressed, written consent of the student. There are, however, some exceptions.
For example, directory information includes the following, and may be released without the student’s consent: names, home address, e-mail address, telephone number, major, status (including current enrollment, dates of attendance, full-time/part-time, withdrawn), honors received (e.g., Dean’s List recognition) and degrees earned. Please note that you have the right to withhold the release of directory information. To do so, you must complete a “Request for Non-Disclosure of Directory Information” form, which is available from the Student Records
Office (Room 2507). Please note two important details regarding placing a “No Release” on your record:
The College receives many inquiries for directory information from a variety of sources outside the institution, in-cluding friends, insurance companies, parents, relatives, prospective employers, the news media and honor
societies. Having a “No Release” on your record will preclude release of such information, even to those people.
A “No Release” applies to all elements of directory information on your record. Jefferson Community College does not apply a “No Release” differentially to the various directory information data elements.
A copy of the Act, more details about your rights, and any College policies related to the Act are available from the Dean of Enrollment Management. Additional details are also found in the EGCC College Catalog on pages 174-176.
Questions concerning FERPA should be referred to the Dean of Enrollment Management.
