Navarro County 4-H Newsbreak
September 2011
One Day 4-H: One Day 4-H is one day for all the 4-H members, parents, leaders, and volunteers to step out into their communities and county and say “thank you” by giving back to them more than 103 years of support to 4-H in Texas. This day of community service is what ever each 4-H members, club, or county 4-H program wants it to be. It could be as simple as picking up trash and mowing the lawn for senior citizens to elabo-rate as hosting a 5K Walk/Run and raising money for a cause. Contact your Club Manager or County Extension Agent for more details.

All 4-H mem-bers wanting to participate in ANY 4-H event for the 2011-2012 year will need to complete a green enrollment form. Green forms will be handed out at your first 4-H club meeting of the year starting in either August or September (some clubs will start in September). If you have completed enrollment in the past years on 4-H Connect, you will not be able to do that this year. This year all 4-H enrollment will be in person at your club meeting. Youth must be enrolled by October 31st to be considered a bon a fide 4-H member of Navarro County. New this year for enroll-ment is the PARTICIPATION FEE. There will be a $20 Participation Fee which has been set by the Texas 4-H & Youth Development. The fee is set state wide, there-fore all 4-H members across the state will pay $20.

Major (Spring 2012 Major Stock Shows) Validation Dates:
Houston & NCYE Poultry Orders– the deadline to order birds for the Houston Livestock Show
and the Navarro County Youth Expo Poultry Shows is September 16th. Birds can be purchased in
increments of 25 and are $1.25/bird. The minimum amount to order per youth is 25 and the maxi-
mum amount is 75. IF YOU WANT TO SHOW POULTRY AT EITHER HOUSTON OR THE NCYE YOU
MUST PURCHASE YOUR BIRDS BY SEPTEMBER 16TH. THERE ARE NO LATE ORDERS!! ORDERS
WILL BE PICKED UP JANUARY 31, 2012 in College Station.
Quality Counts Verification
Starting in 2012, Quality Counts verification will be required for all youth exhibiting livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock shows in Texas (including Ft. Worth, San Anto-nio, Houston, Austin, San Angelo, Sandhills, State Fair and Heart O’ Texas). The verification process will require exhibitors to pass an online test that measures their knowledge on quality assurance and character education content items.
The Quality Counts Program has now been in existence statewide for six years. The program outcome clearly demonstrates youth being more knowledgeable of best management practices associated with livestock pro-jects. More importantly, the program’s impact has demonstrated positive changes in personal character at-tributes as well as adoption of livestock best management practices.
Starting now, youth are able to go online (http://qualitycounts.tamu.edu/) to take the test and become veri-fied. A verification number will need to be provided at the time of making an official entry into a Texas ma-jor livestock show. Thus, youth will need to have completed and passed the test before the major livestock show’s entry deadline. A passing score has been determined to be 80%.
Youth educators and the major livestock shows in Texas believe strongly in Quality Counts. Collectively, they are confident that this significant step of requiring youth to be “Quality Counts Verified”, starting in 2012, will strengthen and enhance the youth livestock pro-gram in Texas.
All Navarro County 4-H Clubs will be having Quality Counts presentations at their October
meetings. Therefore it is imperative that every 4-H member attend their monthly meeting.
Navarro County 4-H members participating in any Spring 2012 Major Stock Shows must be
Quality Counts Verified by November 8th.
If you have any questions please feel free to call Emily at 903-654-3075 or 682-
