Instead of using asphalt , concrete wasbeing used .Asphalt, the material of choice at JFKairport, has a lifespan of ve to 10 years.Concrete's is nearly 40, but installing

concrete costs about 10 percent moreover asphalt and takes out the runwayunder reconstruction out of commissionfor a signicantly longer time.Asphalt is typically overlayed in sections,which means part of the runway can beused for ights during construction, whileworking with concrete requires taking outthe entire runway for the length of theconstruction cycle, drastically impactingoverall airport operations, potentiallycausing those dreaded minutes andhours on the tarmac.
