"Artistic creation is not mere decoration. The artist has to convey his inspiration to others while allowing them freedom and

interpretation."(Liu Chun Hau)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or so one is led to believe. Artistic endeavors are open to interpretation from each and every encounter, engagement with an art piece is mercurial. An artist may intend for one message to be conveyed but this can change recurrently upon interaction and engagement. What if it became possible to relay interpretations of visual art sonically? How then do we consider the resulting venn diagram?

This is what 'Audiolise' aims to do. Working with a diverse team of Irish artists, both emerging and established from all over the country, we will use their work as the starting point to dive into a world of imagination and interpretation. By utilising emerging technology as the tool to harness opinion, the exhibition is only the first stage of the process. Post-exhibition the users sonic choices will be amalgamated and analysed in order to attempt to establish an understanding of perception.

You are invited to take part in this unique project in The Basement Gallery in Dundalk (http://www.createlouth.ie/category/basement-gallery) on the 17th May for one night only.

Showcasing two Co.Louth based artists: Sean Cotter and Susan Mc Evoy. Other artists include: Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Diana Muller, Erin Treacy, Ken Browne, Anne Muller and Ben Readman.

A first for 9dots ~ Local PR company hires DkIT graduate~

9dots, the All-Ireland PR agency has recruited its first full-time staff member, first class honours PR degree graduate Karen Doherty. Karen has been appointed as Account Executive and will provide public relations consultancy to clients across numerous sectors in Ireland, as well as the UK.

Founded and managed by PR veteran, Roisin Duffy, 9dots, the All-Ireland PR agency is in its first year of trading and is already competing alongside some of the most established PR companies in the country. Due to significant growth in the past year, this new and dynamic PR business is expanding its existing team of external associates and consultants to provide for its award-winning clients.

Karen studied public relations for four years at the School of Business and Humanities at DkIT. In October 2010, she became one of Ireland's first ever PR graduates to obtain a Bachelor of Arts.

“I am delighted for Karen, said Shane Hill, head of Department of Management and Financial Studies, DkIT. Karen was an excellent student and it is wonderful to see one of our first PR graduates secure employment locally within such a dynamic local organisation.”

During her work experience at DkIT, Karen got the opportunity to provide PR support to some high profile companies including Pat the Baker, The Regional Development Centre, iRadio i105-107FM, Serious PR, Greenshoots Incubation Centre, Go Europa and Brandt Technologies. Karen also got the opportunity to provide PR for DkIT¹s Guinness World Record breaking attempt for the most people rocking the boat at the one time. This saw DkIT receive nationwide media coverage on television, online, in print and on radio.

"I am very pleased to welcome Karen on board as Account Executive, said Roisin Duffy, founder and managing director of 9dots, the All-Ireland PR agency. "Karen will be based at 18 Francis Street and play a key role here in terms of delivering for our clients. Already, in her short time with us she has been achieving great results. The PR degree course at DkIT prepares students well for the 'real world' of work given the subjects it covers and the 5 month work placement it offers. I first met Karen on her work placement a few years ago when I was providing consultancy to IQ360, a cross-border entrepreneurial programme between the RDC at DkIT and Greenshoots at the Southern Regional College. At that time, Karen impressed me with her natural way of communicating, her attention to detail and her appetite for good news stories. At 9dots, we are reporters as much asadvisers and communication is our discipline. Karen is now a valued member of our team and she is embarking on a new journey with us and our clients."

Karen is a member of Dundalk¹s best-known dance group, Dance Kids Stage School. For the past three years, Karen has managed PR for the dance group, which has seen it go from strength to strength.

"I am delighted to join the 9dots team as there is so much going on and we're working with such great companies and individuals. At the best of times it is so difficult to get into the PR industry, but now more so than ever during the recession. There are less jobs and more pressures on PR companies so I am very happy to have found a PR role. It's great that there is a local PR firm so close-by and one that is adhering to such professional industry standards and working with some of the best companies in the country."

For more information on 9dots, the All-Ireland PR agency please visit www.9dots.ie or follow 9dots on Twitter www.twitter.com/9dotspr or telephone Roisin Duffy on 042 9370994.

Chamber Hold After Hours Meeting in DkIT

As part of the Business After Hours Club, Dundalk Chamber will have their next meeting in the Carrolls Building in DKIT on Wednesday May 18th 2011 at 6.00pm sharp and hope you and one or two of your colleagues will attend.

Programme for the evening is as follows;

Fast tour of Carrolls post regeneration; by Dr Bob McKiernan Head of School of Informatics and Creative Arts*

Fast presentations on Doing Business in China and will include the following speakers and subjects:

• Managing manufacturing there” by Ciaran Herr, (Horseware)• “China in my supply chain” by Paul Jevens, The Hangar Company)

Coffee etc available during an open discussion & questions to/with above two presenters and, Rocky Meng of Satir.

Dundalk is uniquely placed to position itself as the focal point for an Irish-Chinese Cluster. We have the first inward investment from China, Satir and the second is down the road in Drogheda. We have the highest proportion of Chinese students at any Irish 3rd level learning institution. One even had the audacity to help organize this year St Patrick’s Day Parade!!

A SMART move from this event will be to formalize that advantage and engage the processes to make doing business with Chinese suppliers that much easier and then to resolve to place ourselves right in the eye-line of potential Chinese investors thinking of establishing a presence in Europe. If you have employees of Chinese origin, this event may be beneficial to them. If this is the case, would you please send us their details or inform them of this event.

If you would like to attend this Business After Hours event please reply to [email protected] or call Catherine or Kathleen on Tel: 042 9336343. A small charge €5 for tea and coffee will apply. Thank you.

Successful Poster Conference:Scientific Applications in Modern Life – April 2011

A conference on Scientific Applications in Modern Life was held in the Nursing

Foyer in DkIT last month. First year students on the BSc in Pharmaceutical

Science and BSc in Bioscience presented a poster on this topic. The posters

formed a major part of the continuous assessment of the Success Skills 2

module in both programmes. The brief, set by lecturers Dr Niamh Dreeling

and Annmarie McHugh, was to research the science of a specific application

in modern life and present how it works in a poster. The students were

organised in groups of 4 and worked during semester 2 on their posters. The

resulting posters showed great creativity, imagination and teamwork on quite

a variety of very interesting scientific applications ranging from how Botox

works to the mechanics of Prosthetic Limbs. Some of the students are

pictured beside their posters.

Nursing Building and Theatre has a Name Change The Governing Body has approved the change of name of the Nursing

Building and Theatre N128 to the *Muirhevna Building *and the *Setanta

Theatre*. These names were proposed following a consultative process

which took place within the Department of Nursing, Midwifery & Health

Studies and involved both students and staff. The rationale for the choice of

names relate to the townland upon which the building is located. The

following is some historical background information on both names:

“When Cuchulainn was young he was called Setanta, he was the son of

Deichtine and Lug (the Celtic god of Light). He was raised at a fort in

Muirtheimne, by Finnchaem, the sister of Conchobar, King of Ulster. Setanta

was brought up as a warrior, according to the wishes of his father, Lug. At the

age of six Setanta asked to go to Emain Macha to Conchobar's school for

warriors. He excelled at every aspect of battle and everyone agreed that

Setanta was destined to become a legend. Setanta was raised at the fort of

Muirtheimne /Muirhevna which is an ancient Gaelic Irish verb meaning

reclaimed from the sea and this is the area that the nursing building college is

built on.”

Caption Competition

We didn't get any captions for this photo but then it is exam time so perhaps it's encouraging to think that everyone is studying too hard to worry about the royal wedding! However Glen Morgan has contacted us to suggest that Prince William may be going for the Thunderbird look. What do you think? I wonder if the sash could become a fashion trend this summer?

And next weeks photo?
