This is a discourse of computational design that I am highly interested in. Through tracking the path of organisms, in particular birds, it is possible to create highly complex and innovative forms. While this is technically possible without the use of computational design, the same level of complexity would not be reached. Scripting is the ability for a user to manipulate a program to suit their needs. It allows for a wider possibility of outcomes using the same amount of time. Through tracking organisms it is possibly to create a set of rules or functions which summarise the movement. These functions can then be imported in a scripting program and used to create architectural forms. This is particularly useful in agent based design because of the ability for the program to process the complex algorithim in a much shorter time than it would take by hand, if possible to do by hand at all. The complexity of the forms that are created would also be highly difficult to portray in a programme such as AutoCAD.

fibrous tower 2, roland snooks, kokkugiaAn example of a project that uses agent based algorithmic methodology. The complexity of the forms that are created would also be highly difficult to portray in a programme such as

AutoCAD.

biothing research and projectsBiothing projects concentrate on the concept of agent based design and realising this through digital technologies. Patterns are found in natural ecosystems, which are then defined via parametric programming to create a new 'intelligent' architecture. New types of structure and organisation that are more logical that previous designs. Programming of molecular transactions, that also leads to sustainability. As is typical of digital programming, agent based design is an example of bottom up design processes, which are what we

are concentrating on in our studio.
