A Preliminary Study on Biopolymerised Concrete with
Sawdust as an Admixture

Abstract In this study bio polymer obtained from Tapioca starch and sawdust in fine form were assessed for the use as partial replacement of cement materials for an application in
lightweight concrete. Physical and chemical characteristics of bio polymer and sawdust
were analyzed initially. Properties of concrete that has been investigated were
compressive, tensile and flexural strength. The cement has been replaced by bio polymer
and saw dust accordingly in the range of 1 and 2–5%, respectively for M-20 concrete
mix. The concrete specimens were tested in three series as compression test, split tensile test and flexural test. These tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties
of concrete after 28 days curing.

NDT Studies on Geopolymer Concrete with Addition

Abstract Modern day construction activities are not proved to be enviro-friendly and most of the
building materials we use for the construction purpose consumes lot of natural resources
and have huge carbon foot print. Innovations in civil engineering industry is also taking place apart from usage of regular materials, once such innovative material that has
potential to reduce the carbon foot print is Geopolymer. In our country the research in Geopolymer concrete is rapidly picking up and many materials were tested as
impregnation for Geopolymer concrete. This study is an attempt made by authors to test
the NDT study based strength of Geopolymer concrete with and without addition of various natural fibers. It is found in the study that impregnation of various fibers in
Geopolymer adds more strength to the concrete and also increases the density of concrete.

Development of a Program for the Design of Steel
Structure in Visual Basic

Abstract Design of the steel structure is the basic requirement in the construction field. If design is safe then only the structure will be erected. While designing the tall structures, time
consumptions is large because of large numbers of elements. There are many software
programs available for exact analysis of structures. Some software programs have been developed for the design of individual element for Indian Standard Code IS 800:2007 [1],
The Visual Basic Software Programs are used to analyse the beam, column and joint with
inputs like maximum shear force, bending moment and preliminary dimensions. This can easily check all the parameters for safe design. The use of this Visual Basic Program
saves time and minimizes human error.

Performance of Offshore Steel Jacket Platforms under
Near-source Ground Motion Type Pulses

Abstract Behaviour of jacket type offshore structures under ordinary ground excitations has already been addressed by a number of researchers. However, their performance under
near-source ground excitations has not been particularly addressed in the literature.
Records from recent earthquakes, such as the Kobe Japan (1995) and Chi-Chi Taiwan (1999), have revealed that the dynamic excitations in near-source are dominated by a
large, narrow band and long period pulse caused by rupture directivity effects. Failure and sever damages were reported to occur in specific bridges, quay walls and multistory
buildings near to the shaking fault. The dynamic characteristics of the damaged
structures were close to the traits of the rupture directivity and fling pulses. This paper deals with the behaviour of jacket offshore structures under near-source strong ground
excitations. A finite element approach has been chosen for this study. The numerical
model has first been verified against available experimental data on tubular frames from other researchers. The verified model has then been used to examine the response of the
jacket platform models, typical to those in the Persian Gulf, under harmonic, near-source and far-source excitations. To get an insight into both the pre and post failure zones of
the structure response, an Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) method has been
employed. In general, it has been found that with some jacket models the near-source excitations appear quite critical as compared with those from the corresponding far-
sources. Conversely, with other some models, the far-source excitations have been found to be more unfavorable.
