Stainless Steel Overview –The Ultimate Material

There is scarcely a material in existence that has found its way to so many applications as stain-less steel. Developed in the early part of the 20th century, stainless steel is an exceptional choice for today’s sanitary applications and corrosive environments.

Stainless steel is thegeneric name for a number of different steels used primarily because of their cor-rosion resistance. All stainless steels share a minimum percentage of 10.5% chromium.

Chromium is always the deciding factor, although other elements, particularly nickel and molybde-num, are added to improve corrosion resistance.

The success of the material is based on the fact that it has one unique advantage. The chromium in the stainless steel has a great affi nity for oxy-gen, and will form a fi lm of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel at a molecular level.

This layer is described as:• Passive (does not react or infl uence other ma-terials, that is, it will not rust), • Tenacious (clings to the layer of steel and is not transferred elsewhere), and • Self-renewing (if damaged, more chromium from the steel will be exposed to the air and form more chromium oxide, i.e., self-healing).

In many cases stainless steel is the most cost effi cient solution because of enhanced life cycle costs. Stainless steel has a signifi cantly longer service life and requires less main-tenance than other materials. Moreover, stainless steel is fully recyclable and has a high scrap value ondecommissioning.

The inherent durability of stainless steel makes it an ideal material for fl oor drains, fl oor sinks, fl oor cleanouts and trench drains regardless of theapplication. Stainless steel with its intrinsicgratifying appearance is perfect for facilities where hygienics and visibility are inherent, as well as, applications dealing with chemicals, deter-gents, and other destructive effl uents. Stainless steel offers a superior sanitary surface which is why it is standard for commercial kitchens andother environments where hygiene is paramount.

Stainless steel is strong and ductile as compared to

plastic and Hi-Sil iron, making it ideal for fl oor drains,

fl oor sinks, fl oor cleanout, and trench drain applica-

tions. All our cast and fabricated stainless drains are

made of type 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel

(when specifi ed).

The Products9600 Series – Made from fabricated 14 and 16gauge type 304 stainless steel or 316 material canbe supplied (when specifi ed).

9700 Series – Made from ASTM-A351 (CF8) cast equivalent to type 304 rough fi nished stainless steel. ASTM (CF8M) equivalent to type 316 can be supplied(when specifi ed). Floor Drains

NOTE: Dimensions shown in parenthesis are in millimeters.

Function: Used in fl oors where corrosive liquids must drain or be discharged. Solid top variation with closure plug allows placement of drains for future use. The ad-vantage of stainless steel over high silicon iron is that it resists corrosive liquids and accomodates machining for threaded outlets, secured top and/or fl ashing clamps. These drains are readily adaptable to most types of drain line piping materials. Type 304 stainless steel will handle a variety of corrosive wastes which are found in laboratories, chemical, atomic energy, photographic processing, dairy, breweries and bottling.
