MESSAGE I am happy to note that the INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING department of SARANATHAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING is launching an E -Magazine PRINCIPAL RATHNOTTAMA’S.
I am again happy to note the department, apart from pursuing academic excellence, is also trying to motivate the students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers and productive engineers in an ever-changing global society. The students are now provided with a platform to express themselves Dr.V.Gopalakrishnan and exhibit their skills. I wish this endeavour great success.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING is launching an e-magazine RATHNOTTAMA's for publishing the department technical activities carried out by our staff and students.
HOD/ICE The electronic format of communicating is used, as it is more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This way, our newsletter can be as many pages as we have articles to fill them! Please enjoy this newsletter – it is full of interesting articles about what the young people, with the guidance and support of the teachers doing at SCE. It’s really an amazing place to be.
This way we encourage the students to participate fully in the life of college, take advantages of this time to learn thoroughly and explore fully the
Dr.S.Uma opportunities available. I wish them every success and look forward for more events in the coming days.
We have all the modern technologies like, Robotics, GPS, DCS, Cellular GSM, Network IP,
Tele Control etc together with powerful software tools like DSP/Image Processing etc to perform almost any application. PROFESSOR As the Visionaries say ‘Benefits of any useful engineering attempt must reach the common man/Public’. Present day’s major challenges for common man’s progress where ‘Instrumentation and Control’ can rescue are in the areas of:
1. Security threat (from both Terrorism and e-crime). 2. Eradication of Corruption (by Automation of economic transactions etc). G.Muthuraman 3. Mitigation of disasters (from both natural and manmade calamities). 4. Road safety amidst exploding transports (by ‘Zero accident’ with unmanned Vehicles).
Also, if we look at the ‘Defence Power’ of a nation, the chronological order goes like this: 1. Muscle Power. 2. Weapon systems with Sword, etc. 3. Rifles, Guns and Tanks, etc. 4. Combat Aircrafts & Bombers. 5. Missiles and warheads. But today, the ‘Brain Power & Human resources are over taking.
Former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam often emphasizes “Sky is the limit. Low aim is a crime.” YOU CAN DO IT. This RATHNOTTAMA’S is your magazine. Effectively make use and contribute.

“Fuzzy Mathematical Modelling and Optimisation Techniques” at Anna University, Tiruchirapalli during 27-28 July 2011.

The association of INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING students was inaugurated by Dr.S.M.Girirajkumar, Professor/EIE, M.A.M.College of Engineering, Trichy on 4th August 2011. Dr.V.Gopalakrishnan, Principal presided over the function Dr.S.Uma, HOD made felicitation address Mr.D.Shanmugam was the staff adviser. The office bearers were introduced during the inauguration. Dr.S.M.Girirajkumar, delivered a Lecture on “Placement opportunities in Core Industries”

INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING department organised following events in PRUDENTIA’11, A National Level Symposium held at Saranathan college of Engineering on 26th and 27th of September 2011.

ARTICLES Automatic Gain Controller using PIC Microcontroller

Introduction:
PIC Microcontroller:
PIC is a family of Harvard architecture microcontrollers made by Microchip Technology, derived from the PIC1640 originally developed by General Instrument's Microelectronics Division. The name PIC initially referred to "Peripheral Interface Controller".
PICs are popular with both industrial developers and hobbyists alike due to their low cost, wide availability, large user base, extensive collection of application notes, availability of low cost or free development tools, and serial programming (and re-programming with flash memory) capability.
Microchip announced on February 2008 the shipment of its six billionth PIC processor
Automatic Gain Controller: Automatic gain control (AGC) is an adaptive system found in many electronic devices. The
average output signal level is fed back to adjust the gain to an appropriate level for a range of input signal levels. For example, without AGC the sound emitted from an AM radio receiver would vary to an extreme extent from a weak to a strong signal; the AGC effectively reduces the volume if the signal is strong and raises it when it is weaker.
Procedure:
Place the PIC16F877A in the slot given in the PIC board
Connect the PIC board to the PC using a RS232 cable.
Open the MPlab IDE software in the PC and type the coding to find the RMS value of the signal source.
To find the RMS value first change the analog voltage to digital voltage and take samples and find the RMS using this formula
Vrms = √(∑Vi2/n)
where
Vi – Instantaneous voltage, N – No. of Samples.

Assume an appropriate Reference Voltage.
RMS of signal indicates the strength of the signal. If the RMS value goes lower than Reference voltage then a low resistor (10Ω) is connected in series. If the RMS value is high than reference voltage a high resistor (10kΩ) is connected in series.
So type another coding to compare the RMS values with the reference voltage and choose the required resistors.
It is connected to an inverting input terminal of an OP-Amp with a feedback resistance present in it.
So the gain is specified using this OP-Amp.
Open TINYBOOTLOADER software in the PC
Checks whether the PIC is working are not and then choose the tab write flash in TINYBOOTLOADER.
It would open a dialog box and load the hex file in it and give the command write flash in TINYBOOTLOADER.
This would load the program into PIC and thus allow us to function normally.
