“Ministers of religion were notable among the educated group of

19th century Australia andit was proper for educated

people to be well read in whatwas called natural history.

Also at that time a closer relationship was perceived between science and religion than would be understood today. Then there was a search for harmony in all that is. Science was part of the understanding of creation … and the development of science was all part of the missionary work.” (Peter Anderson, “Julian Tenison Woods”)

Our LegacyA Shared Vision

In a musical instrument we see if some, or if only one, of the chords go wrong, the rest are in some way suffering from it. We know at once what is wrong by the sound these suffering chords make, until it is repaired and harmony restored

again. … So, all pull together, and all be of one mind and one spirit.

Instruction to Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, 30 Nov., 1880.

God, we thank youfor the legacy given us

by Father Julian Woods. We share the vision he left us,of peoples living in harmony

with your creation.Be with us, as we ponder today what that vision requires of us

in an age when scientific knowledge is often set against faith.

We ask this invoking the Spirit, and in the name of your Son,

Jesus. Amen.
