Here’s another image from the CRAB 31concours. This 356 SC belongs to Paul andCindy Christensen of the Sierra NevadaRegion. This car impressed me because itshowed a great balance between beingtreasured and being driven! It wascomplete, shiny, and obviously well-cared-for, but it clearly got to come out of thegarage to play a lot too. There's no denyingthe beauty of a Porsche, but these cars weremeant to be enjoyed on the road too.Sometimes a few bug splats and the oddpaint blemish just go with the territory.

August Dinner Meeting Thursday, August 12

Riva Bar and Oven Would you believe Dwight & Linda Mitchell are returning all the way from Florida to chair the August dinner meeting? It's true! It will be at one of their favorite Sacramento area eateries, Riva Bar & Oven (formerly Paragary's) in Gold River.

Matt, the chef who prepared the excellent meal we had at Paragary's at the August 2003 dinner meeting, told Dwight that he promises an even better meal this year. If you were there last year you will remember just how outstanding it was.

So please plan to join Dwight and Linda at Riva Bar & Oven on August 12. Seating will be limited to 40 people, so be sure to make your reservations early by calling Mike or Emily Willis at 916-363-8313. Cost is expected to be similar to last year at about $22 per person. Details will appear in the August Drifter.

Autocrossing Anyone?Well, did I get your attention? From theturnout we had at the CRAB autocross,we have a lot of SVR people who like toautocross. The continuing problem, how-ever, is that we don’t have a local autocrosssite, and our efforts to date haven’t givenus any hope for finding one in the nearfuture. For many years we ran 6 to 8 au-tocrosses a year at Mather Air Force Base, but that all changed with 9/11. That ’swhen the Sheriff ’s Department decidedthat they needed exclusive access to thesite for officer training.

We’re not alone with this problem. There are many other clubs in the Sacra-mento area that run autocrosses, andthey’re in the same boat. Last year weteamed up with the Yosemite Region andran a couple of autocrosses at the Stock-ton Fairgrounds. But because of the de-

mand by car clubs, by December of lastyear the Fairgrounds were completelybooked up for 2004. Over the last sixmonths we have investigated a number ofsites, but nothing has panned out for usyet. If anyone out there is aware of a suit-able site, we sure would like to hear fromyou. Contact Frederick Rauch or myselfwith any ideas you have, and we’ll be hap-py to do the legwork to see if the site isavailable and acceptable for our needs.

In the meantime, both Golden Gateand Redwood Regions have active au-tocross programs and they are within acouple of hours of Sacramento. In August,GGR and Loma Prieta Region are team-ing up to put on a two-day autocrossschool at Candlestick Park. I went throughthis school three years ago and it is one ofthe best. You’ll learn a lot about drivingyour car to its full potential, and it’s a lotof fun. Also, Frederick Rauch is puttingon a combination Driver Education andAutocross at Infineon Raceway at SearsPoint in November.

New Member (G24) BreakfastRick Weidner held his first new memberbreakfast gathering at Andiamo on Fol-

som Boulevard, and I can say we had agreat time. It was a low-key gathering, with Rick talking about his hopes for theprogram, and everyone just getting toknow one another. These breakfast meet-ings aren’t just for the new members, how-ever. Anyone can come, and it’s a great wayto spend a couple of hours on a Saturdaymorning. Keep your eye on The Drifter andthe SVR Calendar of Events for upcom-ing gatherings.

Speaking of Our Events CalendarThe summer months are always packedwith Club activities. I hope that all of youwill come out and join us in some of thedifferent events. Dennis Stettner does anexcellent job of keeping our calendar upto date and you can always see the latestchanges or additions on our web site(http:/ /www.derporsche.net/). So let’s getthose Porsches rolling and …

I’ll see you on the Road.

Awesome Horsepower Tour Saturday July 31 8:00AM

A very special show and tour of Lacey’s Arabian Ranch has been arranged for a maximum of 20 cars from SVR. We will be given a private show that will last over an hour. These beautiful horses are the stuff of dreams and movies; come share in a very special day.

In addition to Lacey’s Arabian Ranch, stops will include the Sierra Rizing Bakery, the Golden Gecko nursery, and the Venecio Winery. Box lunches will be available for $7.00 each. This includes a sandwich, a soda, and either chips, a cookie, or fruit cocktail. We will stop at a park in Garden Valley to eat.

Meet in El Dorado Hills Towne Center by 8:00am, near Ralph’s. Take the Latrobe Rd exit from Hwy 50 and go south.

Cost: $2.00 per person. If you wish a box lunch, a form will be mailed and a check for $7.00 required.

Drifting Back

30 Years Ago (July 1974)In the July Drifter, SVR Photo ContestChair Kirk Bradford was beside himselfover the excellent entries for the June pho-to contest. The winners were: Ted Robin-son for his black & white picture of deW-itt’s Pumpkin, and Ray Seamans for hiscolor photo of Barbara Boone racing atthe Pleasanton Zone 7 autocross. Kirk alsogave recognition to runners-up, includingArnold & Trish O’Shields’ photo of AllenWeddle accepting his well-earned Snid-ley Whiplash Award at the CRAB III ban-quet.

Also in The Drifter, President PaulBates gave more information about theClub’s new autocross trailer. The Boardauthorized an expenditure of $100 in Clubfunds, and with an additional cash loanfrom each board member, the balance se-cured the purchase of a 5x8 E-Z Haultrailer. Bob Schleh had run across a dealhe could not refuse on a “near new” trailer. The trailer was made available for rent toClub members to pay off the board mem-ber’s loans to the Club.

The big deal this month was the July21 Annual Picnic and Charity Auctionchaired by Randy Blaesi at the East Por-tal Park. Bob Schleh was the auctioneer, and all proceeds went to the SacramentoCouncil for the Pre-School Retarded. Asusual, there was a vigorous volleyball gamebetween the 900s and the 356s, and all thebeer and soft drinks one could possiblyconsume.

20 Years Ago (July 1984)July 28-29 saw 83 Porsches from Zone 7regions plus Northwest and San Diego re-gions run the 3rd annual Tahoe Dixie Tour& Cruise, chaired by Jim & SheilaMcDade. The route wound through Fid-dletown, Mt. Aukum and up the MormonEmigrant Trail, with lunch at KirkwoodMeadows Ski Resort. Then the groupheaded east on Highway 88 to the TahoeSands Vagabond Motel and a pool-sideparty with cold refreshments, horsd’oeuvres, and jazz music by the Gil Lest-er Trio (and Larry Wilson sitting in withhis flugelhorn). Jim Austin won the “bro-

adjump,” and Sally Weddle took the “polevault” competitions. Door prizes for allincluded 80 bottles of liquor. SVR mem-bers George & Linda McClarrinon won$350 in services donated by Niello Por-sche. A four-hour dinner cruise on theTahoe Queen paddlewheeler capped offthe evening. It was brunch next morningand then sightseeing, gambling, and/or thetrip home.

10 Years Ago (July 1994)Parade News: The Drifter (editors Chris& Shelagh Mackay) won first-in-class inthe 1994 national PCA newsletter contest.Contest results were announced andawards presented July 11 at the 1994 Por-sche Parade in Lake Placid, New York byPCNA Director of Public Relations BobCarlson, PCA President Burt Misevic, andPCA National Newsletter CommitteeChair Larry Wilson. Rik Larson and JohnClever won overall in the Parade Rally, with J. Toney and partner Willie Williamscoming in second.

The July 16 Autocross School, chairedby Jim Dupree at Granite Bay 4th StageParking Lot, was a huge success for thestudents who knocked 3 to 5 seconds offtheir times at days end. What’s the for-mula for success? Seat-time with an in-structor. That’s what students got plentyof.

The Great SVR Family Camp-Out atPlasse Resort at Silver Lake, between Jack-son and Kirkwood Ski Resort, July 22-24(Friday through Sunday), was chaired byArlene Pluth and Mary Siles. Happymemories included hiking, biking, horse-back riding, a general store, dining roomwith bar, shower facilities, firewood, andevening camp fire circles. Happy campersincluded Joe & Barbara Schumacher, Bill& Tori Keegan, Steve & Diane Harris,Bob & Mary Siles, John & Arlene Pluth,Ron & Sally Boeck, Greg & CyndeePeart, Bob & Marian Berriman, and Phil& Jean Keith.

12 The Drifter

My “new” Porsche arrived on a Friday night. It was the best thing (except my husband)to see when I got home! It is a lovely shadeof lemon yellow (over blue, over orange), butnot for long. It will return to its original shadeof Signal Orange not soon enough!

It was a little scary at first when I peekedinside—inches of dust and dirt. So I rolledup my sleeves, got a bucket of Simple Greenmixture, a rag, and gloves and went to work!Squeezing into the back of a 911 is not aneasy job at the youthful age of 42. As I wipedand rinsed and wiped and rinsed I could seethe black shiny … vinyl showing through. The rear deck is slightly warped, but not toobad.

My husband bought me a “2.2 Flat 6”sticker for the rear window as a birthdaypresent. (Alright … he took me to Carmelas well, but I really wanted the sticker.) Aswe were putting it in the window and press-ing it into place, the window was moving aswell. Do you think there could be any rustin there? Naw, it came from Arizona.

As I moved up to the front seats, I fell tothe bottom of the drivers seat. Hum, kindof felt like an old mattress. As I made myway around the dash, I got to the glove box.Hum … wonder what could be in here? Wellif I could get it open, I would know! Seemsthe glove box is jammed. I tried wigglingand pulling and pushing to no avail. Ah, I’llleave that one up to the mechanic!

It was a labor of love, and what a differ-ence it made. The car cleaned up so well. Iwas amazed. After the cleaning, I spiffed upthe vinyl seats with a leather conditioner. They look so good! The seats are in greatshape. OK, the driver’s seat has a saggy bot-tom, but I feel a certain camaraderie with

that!Well, let me tell you about the driving

experience! The neighbors heard it frommiles around, and what they heard was thesputter and backfire of 5 (instead of 6) cyl-inders! I said to my husband sitting in thepassenger seat, “Listen to that flat 6, Hon-ey.” He said, “No, that’s a flat 5!” The movieChitty Chitty Bang Bang came to mind. Itwas a little rough, but I loved it! Given thatthere isn’t much stuffing left in the driver’sseat, I’ll need a pillow to sit on until I get it

to the upholstery shop … but I love it!My face was beaming as I made my way

around the neighborhood searching for gearsI could not find. The gears were hard to fig-ure out without a knob inscribed with thegear shift pattern. I had looked at one oneBay and knew reverse was at the upper left.

I think I started out in 2nd and 4th severaltimes! That did not deter me from drivingmy little car, and I loved every jerky, smellymoment of it! Ah, the smell of that exhaust! And of course we had to have the windowsdown because there aren’t handles on theinside. (Who wants to get out anyway?)

OK, I’m in love with this car. It looksbeautiful on the inside, and my momma saidit’s inside beauty that counts. Right?

Speaking of the inside, who was the sillyperson who put a Momo steering wheel inthis beautiful car? Well, after countless hourssearching eBay, I found myself a 1970 911Tsteering wheel. The auction had the nerveof ending at 3:14 am, but a dedicated Por-sche fanatic doesn’t care. I set my alarm for3:09 (to give my self a little time to bring upanother browser incase some other biddergot in my way) to win my new steering wheel:1 minute … 40 seconds … 15 seconds …my fingers are on the trigger … 8 seconds… mine, mine, mine! I slept like a baby foranother 3 hours!

We are leaving a little work to a profes-sional: the engine work. The body work weare going to try to do mostly ourselves.“Butzi” (that’s what I’m naming him), willbe yet another life experience for my hus-band and me to share. We know our mar-riage and our love for anything Porsche isstrong enough to handle any restoration!

Speaking of gatherings, don’t forget tocheck the calendar in the front of this is-sue; this time of year there are lots of greatevents to add enjoyment to your summer. There is no better way to enjoy our Cluband become part of the “fiber of the SVR”than to attend events—or better yet—getinvolved in planning them.

The concept of G24 is to allow the new-er members recognition via the specialname badge. I’m happy to say the com-ments I’m hearing are very positive. Theseasoned members appreciate knowingwho’s new to the Club. The new memberscan easily identify other new members aswell.

The G24 fraternity concept has manypossibilities. If you’d like to host a get-together, a breakfast meeting, or whatever, please let me know; I’d be happy to helpyou. Together we can make it fun and easy.I can be reached at 916-852-0990 [email protected].

SHOW YOUR COLORS… The Goodie StoreWell, it is almost the Fourth of July! Hot dogs, beer, picnics, beer, shortshorts, beer! And the old Red, White & Blue, Old Glory! Know what else ismostly red, white and blue? The PCA car badge—and we can get themagain! All I need is an order! Only $18, plus shipping and handling. Andof course, we still have the SVR ($15) badge and other goodies.

Also, you want to keep cool—well nothing is cooler than our Porsche T-shirts ($18), and our Porsche crest, PCA crest, or SVR logo polo shirts.Don’t miss out! You need our stuff; we need your money! Lets gettogether!

And speaking of money—do you know how long it’s been around? (It sure never stays very long whenyou own a Porsche!) As early as about 7,000 BC—8,950 years before plastic credit cards—cattle wereused as money in the first agricultural civilizations. (Maybe they made change with calves?)

The first coins were bronze pieces shaped like cattle, appearing 5000 years later. Their value wasdetermined by their weight, making their use difficult. Just think how heavy $100 would have been!

Coins with their value imprinted on them were first produced in Lydia in 800 BC. Somewhere in thisperiod the Chinese briefly used paper currency, but the first consistent use of paper money was by theFrench in the 18th century—just in time to be spent on the first overpriced bottles of wine.

See how easy it is to use your current money to buy Goodie Store stuff!

Contact your friendly Goodie Store! See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, Write him at 14537 SurreyJunction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, call 209-296-5352, or email [email protected]. Itemscan be mailed for a small shipping/handling fee.

Another CRAB has come and gone—the31st to be exact. It is amazing to me thatthings I said after chairing CRAB 17 arestill ringing true after CRAB 31. It is theentrants who make CRAB weekend the suc-cess that it has been all these years. But allthe work that the committee does to put onthis event does not go unnoticed.

I guess if I had to sum up what thisCRAB meant to Cindi and me, there wouldbe two things that immediately come tomind. First, I received an email saying thatthis was the most relaxed CRAB that thesender had attended. They had so much funand participated in events that they had notparticipated in before. Also there were a lotof first-timers and they really enjoyed theevent. These are the things that continue tomake this event what it has become over theyears: “The Premier Porsche Weekender”

event that has been copied by other regionsnationally. Second, no matter what adversi-ty arose (like last-minute venue changes forthe autocross and the concours), all got re-solved with a minimum of conflict and a lot“how can we resolve this problem?”

I have a lot of “thank yous” for all of thecommittee members: Greg & Cyndee Peart,Daymon Nightingale (Cyndee’s mom), Kirk& Linda Bradford, Bill Keegan, Tom Sis-son, Bob Peake, Andy & Diana Leight, SueFleming, Kim Nelson, Tyler & KJ Breaux,Bella Vista High School Varsity Golf Teammembers, and Rik Larson.

There are several others who also deserverecognition for their help. Let me begin withTerry Grillo, who I assumed was going to dothe CRAB Program. He didn’t remembersaying he would do it, but he did it on veryshort notice, dealing with two computer sys-tems that were not compatible, and cameup with a super program, all this with hisextremely tight business schedule. PhilLawrence volunteers to help for just aboutany SVR event he attends, and CRAB 31was no exception. There are people in everyorganization like him, and sometimes they

don’t get the credit they deserve. Steve Goltzpitched in when the Beer ‘n’ Brat locationwas virtually flooded by the heavy wateringdone by the grounds keepers at McClellanPark. He single-handedly tried to sweepaway all the flooded areas, and after doingone “hell-u-va” job there, he went over tohelp with the Concours. As if that weren’tenough, he and his wife Linda helped withthe cleanup after everything had ended, allof this without being asked. I guess they sawall the pain and agony on my face Sundaymorning and busted their collective butts. Iwould be remiss if I didn’t include “Wall ofFame” member Rik Larson. As registrar andRally chairman, keeping me up to date, giv-ing me ideas, running errands, reminding meof things I forgot, etc., and just being thelong-time friend that he is, he is an invalu-able asset to SVR! And finally to my wife,Cindi, to whom I promise that this is the lasttime to chair this event!

CRAB 32 is on the McClellan Parkschedule for the same weekend next year, and we hope to see all our friends again nextyear.

The SocialScene

With our Club’s membership hoveringaround the 600 person mark, I was thinkingof how many people jump in and contributeto all the different events offered, social orotherwise. To a large degree, this column typ-ically has two purposes: to thank those whohave hosted events in the past month, and toannounce and thank those who have eventsscheduled in the coming month or two. Haveyou noticed your name? How about offeringto help out one of our hosts on a scheduledevent, or offering to work on one of our bigannual events? We currently need help withthe Holiday Party (already scheduled forDecember 3 at the Sutter Club), and also withCRAB for next year. Yes, next year! Our Club’smajor annual event takes some amount ofcoordination for many months. Please thinkabout volunteering, then giving us a call at916-415-1539.

Major thanks to Britt & Jenny Cooper, who were not only kind enough to offer tohost the June Dinner Meeting, but also did

so at their beautiful home in Penryn! That’svolunteering at its best! Then there are Fred-erick & Susan Rauch, who brought us a NapaWine Tour in May, a Driver Ed event in June, and, as if that weren’t enough, are hosting theJuly Dinner Meeting on Monday, July 12. Wewill once again depart from our usual 2nd

Thursday scheduling in order to have theVillage Green Bar & Grille to ourselves.Come see why the Rauches had over 80members attend last year’s May dinner meet-ing, at 2003 prices again!

Carol & Ira McKee have hosted the Oys-ter Tour for a number of years and once againthis year offered chicken as an alternate menuselection. Thanks for continuing the tradition.July tours include Stumpy Meadows, a tripup into the High Sierra hosted by Jan &Roger Walker on July 10. And hosting hersecond tour of the season, Stephanie Mor-gan brings us the Awesome Horsepower Touron July 31. Stephanie does a great job mixingseveral distinctive destinations on a one-daytour. This time you’ll be treated to a coffeehouse & bakery, an exhibition of Arabianhorses, a specialty nursery, and (of course) awinery. Sign up for this one now as space willbe limited.

Looking forward, we will have our Au-gust Dinner Meeting hosted by our favorite

Floridians, Dwight & Linda Mitchell, onThursday, August 12 at Riva in Gold River.(See page 3 for details.) For those of you whoplan to attend the Monterey Historics thisyear, Cathy and I would like to invite you toour campsite #57 at Laguna Seca for a lun-cheon on Saturday, August 14. We’ll throwsomething on the BBQ and have an SVRmoment amongst all those Ferraris, the fea-tured marque this year.

September brings us a monthly dinnermeeting hosted by Andy & Diana Leight. They are also working with Judy Hanna andRich Swenson on a tour & camping trip toLake Almanor over the weekend of Septem-ber 25-26. The Charity Auction will be onSeptember 12, and Rik & Lettie Larson willhost the Carrera de Sierra Rally and Tour toTruckee on the 18th & 19th. Add a new mem-ber tour, led by Rick & Candace Weidner,on the 11th and you have a full schedule.

For those of you who are new, or eventhose that have been around for a while, giveme or one of our hosts a call and offer to as-sist on an event. It is a great way to get toknow other members. It is somewhat easierto host an event if you’ve worked on one be-fore, but definitely not a requirement. Enjoyyour summer, your car and your friends in thePorsche Club!

This was an experience my son and I willstill be talking about 10 years from now.Top down, wind in our hair, winding ourway along Peach Tree road dodging squir-rels with permanent grins on both of ourfaces—this is the reason I bought theBoxster last August, and the kind of expe-rience I imagined when I joined the PCA-SVR a month later.

The San Simeon Tour was the firstClub event for both of us, but it certainlywon’t be the last. I always enjoy touring inmy machine, but doing it with so manyothers who share my enthusiasm reallytook it to a new level. There’s somethingvery different about touring in a largegroup. As we left Shari’s parking lot, 35strong, and sped down Highway 5 earlyFriday morning, I could really feel the ex-citement and energy of the members. While some focused on driving, others (es-pecially my son) used their radios to passalong road conditions, wildlife reports, ra-dar warnings and upcoming turns as we

headed first West then South through Hol-lister, eventually reaching the Arciero win-ery and lunch. Neither of us could ever re-member a 5-hour drive being so short.

As enjoyable as the drive itself was, itrepresented only part of what made thetrip so memorable. It was really the mem-bers that made it special. As we gatheredfor food, drinks and conversation by thepool on that first evening, so many peoplewent out of their way to make Geoff andme feel welcome and part of the group. Itbecame clear that many lifelong friend-ships had formed through events like thisand association with PCA. It’s that spiritof friendship and camaraderie that alreadyhave me looking forward to my next event, along with the opportunity to see all thosebeautiful machines and share a commonpassion for engineering excellence anddriving enthusiasm.

Thanks to everyone who made this firsttour such a memorable experience forGeoff and me, and a special thanks toMike & Emily Willis for putting it togeth-er. San Simeon, Hearst Castle, and achance to cruise up Highway 1 are reasonenough to jump in the car and go, but it’sthe character and spirit of the individualsthat embody PCA-SVR that will have mecombing The Drifter for future events.

Those of you who know that FOD standsfor Foreign Object Damage have alreadysurmised that this is not an entirely happytale, but it’s the ending that’s important. The tour to Sierra Nevada Brewery onCRAB Saturday was filled with the curvyroads, fractured speed limits, beautiful scen-ery and the gorgeous cars that we all love. The “incident” occurred about 20 milesfrom our destination. Left on the highwayby some unknowable scoundrel, a piece ofmetal embedded itself in our right rear tirecreating an ugly, one-inch gash—and thatthwap-thwap sound of a less than optimalPSI. Specifically, a brand new Pirelli wasno longer as round as it was supposed to beand RDDREM rolled to the roadside list-ing a bit to starboard. Happily for us, Jim& Linda McMahen and Jan Hoover werethe back door for our group and insistedon helping to get a tiny little spare on thecar, providing moral support in the heat anddust of the day, and leading our limpingand only partial-impulse-power-capable911 to the brewery. SVR friends are the best!

We had purchased the tire at America’sTire Company in Rancho Cordova, so we

found the Chico branch and told our storyto Mike Hughs. He could not have beenmore helpful. After pronouncing ourwounded tire well-and-truly dead, he apol-ogized for not having another one instock—even though we all knew P-Zerosare special order in these here parts. Mikethen did something we never anticipated:he provided us with a loaner by stretchinga smaller size tire onto the wheel. Takinganother step further into our gratitude, hewent on to order us a new tire at no cost(tire under warranty – yes!) and called JimTaplin in Rancho Cordova to explain tohim our situation. Several days later, we gavethem our loaner back and departed fullyshod and speed-capable once more. GreatService! So despite the FOD that began ourstory, the experience has a happy ending.

It was a peaceful, quiet May afternoon in thevalleys north of Paso Robles. As Peach TreeRoad winds through the hilly terrain, it is onlyone lane wide. After all, roads with no trafficdon’t need to be any wider. The cloud coverwas just breaking up, exposing the sun. Thenit happened. The calm was broken by the soundof 35 high-performance German engines (andone diesel Mercedes, but who’s counting!).

Now, apparently if you’re a ground squir-rel, the center of this winding strip of pave-ment is usually a nice, warm place to catch afew rays and shake off the morning chill. Justnot today. The squirrels scattered, but not allof them were fast enough. Some appeareddownright suicidal! We could not avoid them, and many a rodent (and a few birds) met theirdemise on that warm day in May in the valleysnorth of Paso Robles.

So it is with apologies to our departed furry& feathered friends that we thank Mike &Emily Willis for hosting a truly relaxing andenjoyable weekend. The night tour of HearstCastle was awesome, the scenery was gorgeous, and those last-minute schedule adjustmentsworked out great. Is it toosoon to sign up for SanSimeon Tour 2006?
