SVR President’s NotesSteve Barker, SVR President

Greetings and welcome to this month’s edition of TheDrifter Newsletter! I hope you are enjoy-ing the articles and the layout of the Newslet-ter. This is a club newsletter and if you’d like to see something or have suggestions let us know what you’re thinking! Our Chief Editor, Bob Jacobson has a wonderful group of writers and staff that work hard to bring this to you every month.

As we’re moving past the half-way mark in February I want to thank Jerry Alter for stepping up and filling in for Herb who was off exploring exotic places! There was a full house at the monthly breakfast including a lot of lively discussions.

The monthly dinner was also a sell out at Wong’s Garden Chinese Cuisine in Roseville on Feb 6th. A tip of the hat to Eduardo Ortega, Jr. for organizing the dinner! Jim McMahen did a very nice job at Share the Wealth proving you don’t necessarily have to buy lots of tickets to win as our table found out! Congrat’s to Noah Bentley for taking home the Dummkopf Award for the “2-Coat Caper” episode at the Christ-mas Party. You’ll have to ask Noah to explain!

Looking ahead to March we kick off the month with the monthly breakfast with travel stories by Herb and Jan! The monthly dinner is being organized by Linda Bradford, our Goodie Store Chair, and will be held on March 18th at the Back Forty BBQ in Roseville. I think this will be a finger licking meal so hope to see you there!

For those that would like to take part in an excellent opportunity to learn how to handle your Porsche don’t miss the club’s annual autocross ground school on Saturday, March 22nd at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. If you have any doubt about how you can benefit from this school contact Collin Fat at 916.955.7966 and he will answer all your questions!

Continuing with the idea of the “SVR Spotlight on Chair Positions”, I had the chance to interview our Concours Chairman, Kent Brandon, this month. I hope you take a few minutes to read about Kent’s position as the Concours Chair. I have not yet posted the video of Richard Walker due to some technical issues, namely me, learning the Movie Studio Software! But my crew is hard at work trying to figure it out and when they do I’m sure they will teach me!

Something else that you should find helpful is a direct link on the SVR home page that our Webmaster John Murphy created is a link to PCA Parade in Monterey. This way you don’t need to go searching around, everything will be one click away! From the home page on the right side in the section “Highlights” look under the PCA badge for Parade 2014.

If you are planning on attending the Parade in Monterey, please note that registration opens on April 1st, no joke!

For all the events planned be sure to read about them in TheDrifter or on SVR-PCA.org website.

I look forward to your comments, suggestions and thoughts and hope to see you at the next club event!

Till next month,

Steve [email protected]

June 15-21, 2014

• A number of new events to tell you about since we had the Planning and Pizza meeting in January.

• The dinner in March will be held on Tuesday, the 18th. Linda Bradford will be the host and has scheduled a 6 PM social at the Back Forty BBQ in Roseville (just off Interstate 80 at Riverside exit). Details are elsewhere in this Drifter. Reservation deadline is March 13th.

• A tour to Sanders Aeronautics has been scheduled for Sunday, April 27th. Details are also in this Drifter.

• The opening registration date for the Parade in Monterey has been delayed until Tuesday, April 1st.

• And I have been told that the event on May 18th is a Poker Run, not a rally.

• The 2014 SVR Directory has been printed and should be in your mailbox in the next few days. There is a calendar in it (dated February 11th) that you can use

to add the above events. And if you have updates/changes to the information in the directory, just contact our Membership Director, Cookie Anderson ([email protected]) and she will get it changed in our database.

• Looks like we are outgrowing our first Saturday breakfast location. Herb and Jan Hoover are out checking out some new places. Stay tuned for their report.

• The national PCA website is going to be out of service for maintenance on March 1st and 2nd. It just might have a new look when we access it on Monday, March 3rd.

• And speaking of websites, John Murphy pointed out that I have been using an incorrect website addresses for the Zone 7 info. The correct website is www.zone77.org

• And looks like you have plenty of opportu-nities to get your autocross skills honed before the Parade with 4 Zone 7 AX’s scheduled before June 15th. And SVR has

an AX Ground School planned for March 22nd. Registration for this event is already open and has limited seating.

• Daylight Savings Time returns on Sunday, March 9th………..lose an hour of sleep.

• You can receive your own copy of the printed Drifter in your mailbox every month. It is a bargain at $15 for the year. You can’t print it for that price using your home printer. And it is mailed to you via first class snail mail. Contact me or Cookie for subscription information.

SVR’s 4th annual autocross ground school is scheduled for March 22nd at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. This year’s event will not include hands driving instruction like past years and will be a one day seminar. It will still be quite educational and will cover everything you will need to know about the sport and the dynamics of car control.

Autocross is a competitive and timed event conducted on a pylon lined course usually setup on the tarmac of an airfield or large parking lot. The objective is to complete the course without hitting any cones in the fastest time possible. Speeds reach a maximum of 50 mph with courses taking between 35 and 60

2014 Niello Porsche Autocross Ground SchoolSaturday, March 22, 2014

seconds to complete. The risk of damage to your car is quite low as the only objects you might hit are the plastic cones. Wear to your tires and brakes can be expected, but worth it given how much fun it is to test the limits of your Porsche. On the street it is difficult to test the limits of your car’s handling in a safe manner and autocross provides the Porsche owner an opportunity to let it all hang out and to experience the incredible handling and engineering that has gone into their prized toy.

The session will be led by Matt Deter, Steve Nieslony, Tim Howard and myself and will cover what you will need to know to prepare for your first event including preparing your car, safety

Werks Reunion— A Porsche Gathering

Carmel Valley, California August 2014

The Porsche Club of America is set to begin a new tradition in 2014 with the inaugural Werks Reunion. The new, premier Porsche event will take place on Friday, August 15, during the world famous “Car Week” on California’s Monterey Peninsula. In years past, PCA co hosted Legends of the Auto-

bahn at the Rancho Cañada Golf Club. For 2014, the club will host a dedicated event to celebrate Porsche automobiles on the very same fairways. Expect a breathtaking array of Porsches, from rare classics to customs, race cars, current models, and everything in between. PCA will host the event with participation from Porsche Cars North America. National PCA Sponsors will also be present with exhibits and displays. Werks Reunion is open to all and tagged as “A Porsche Gathering” for a reason: PCA is inviting other Porsche clubs to join in the fun! Werks Reunion is intended to be a new way for all Porsche owners to mingle during Monterey’s annual auto extravaganza. As a result, the Porsche Owners Club, Porsche Rac-ing Club, 356 Registry, 356 Club, Early 911S Registry, R Gruppe, 914 World, and all Porsche clubs and registries are welcome. Membership in PCA is not required.

Welcome to this month’s edition of the “SVR Spotlight on Chair Positions”Steve Barker, SVR President interviews Kent Brandon, who holds the Concours chair position.

Kent Brandon with his 65 SC Coupe

Steve: Today I’m going to talk to Kent Brandon and he’s here with me in his wonderful garage and I have to say, this is a very interesting place to be! Behind us we have Kent’s 356 that he’s in the process of restoring and I’m going to give him a chance to tell you about it. Now we’ll get to the interview.

Steve: Welcome Kent! Kent: Well thank you Steve

Steve: First would you like to tell us about how long you have been a member of the Sacra-mento Valley Region? Kent: Well Cindy and I were just trying to figure that out, I think it’s been 21, 22 years, something like that.

Steve: Wow that puts you in with a group of only a few people! Kent: Well some of the people have been in the club for 50 years, so not quite that long.

Steve: You could easily fill an hour with stories over that period! Kent: Well not as much as Larry Wilson could fill!

Steve: Larry is the club Historian and most appropriate for that position. Would you like to tell us about the car we have behind us? Kent: Sure, well it’s a 1965 SC and I bought it 2 years ago. A lot of the other members have SC’s and I thought it would be a fun thing to have. It turned out that it wasn’t that easy to find them so I’m calling around and I called on an ad from a club up in Portland Oregon and I’m from Portland so I thought it was interesting and the fellow that owned it was named Kent and I’m Kent! So he answered the phone and I said, “Kent, this is Kent!” He says, “What, what are you talking about?” But as it turns out we had a similar past. We both belonged to the same fraternity but we didn’t know it. As it turns out he was about 10 years older than me. So he wanted to sell the car and Roger Walker and I drove up with a trailer and brought it back.

Steve: So Kent you’re the Concours Chair and you’ve had that position now for a while, correct? Kent: I have.

Steve: Do you want to tell us a little about when you first became the Concours Chair? Kent: I think I became the Concours Chairman when Mike Willis said, “Do you want to be the Concours Chair?”

Steve: That’s usually how it happens right? Kent: That had to be 15, 16, 17 years ago. It was quite a while ago.

Steve: All that experience really shows when you go to a Concours. We’ve been having them at Niello, correct? Kent: We’ve been having them at Niello and they’ve been well attended. Prior to Niello when they built their new facility, we had several of them in conjunction with the Shriners Concours that they used to have behind the Shriners hospital. It was quite spectacular. We had over 100 cars the last year we were there and hundreds of people came to the event. It was well advertised and was a big charity event.

Steve: Looking back, when did you first get interested in Porsche? Kent: Well when I was in high school we had a new neighbor across the street. His name was Kim Lindville. And Kim owned a 1969 911E. At the time it was a pretty new car and he was involved with the Porsche Club and he would extoll the great virtues of the Porsche and he could outrun some kid in a 57 Chevy, he would take me for rides and he had special driving

gloves and he would wind that thing up! I was pretty impressed. When I was a little older I had saved up enough money to get the first car that I actually purchased. I had a car that my parents purchased which was a Dodge Dart with push buttons on the dash and a six cylin-der and I didn’t really like that car. I worked some summers at the Union Pacific Railroad and saved my money and went out to buy a Porsche. Kim called all his buddies at the different places that sold Porsches and I looked and looked and looked and I had one that I

really wanted and a fella named Monty Shelton who owned a small car lot on Sandy Blvd in Portland, who was also a racecar driver. He had a car similar to this (356), it was a 1965 356 SC with a sunroof. It was yellow with red leather interior. Gorgeous car, low miles, like brand new. I sat there and argued with Monty. I had $3000 and he wanted $3,300, and there was no way. I spent two hours trying to get him to come down. I finally gave that up and I ended up with an MGB. Steve: So going back to the chair position for the Concours, Mike asked you to take this on; you’ve been in this position for a while, what do you think people out there would like to hear about what it’s like to be the Concours Chair person? Kent: Well the chairperson for any event needs a lot of help. And whoever the Chairper-son is someone that begs other people to help do it, you can’t do the job yourself.

Page 15: March 2014 - Porsche Club of Americascv.pca.org/drifter/2014/201403.pdf · Enjoying dinner at Wong’s and sharing stories, seated left to right: Rebecca Plourde, Gregg Plourde, Bob

Steve: Like I begged you to do this interview! Kent: Yes like you begged me to sit here in front of the camera and talk! Although I didn’t know what we were going to talk about.

Steve: Yes like we have a whole crew here working behind the scenes! Kent: So it’s really important to get volunteers and it’s very important for other members out there to help the chairs because they can’t do these things by themselves. It probably takes about 10 volunteers to put on a concours. We usually start several months before the concours. We have meetings, we discuss what we’re going to change from the previous years, different elements of it, what worked last year, what didn’t work. What would be better this year, there’s quite a bit that goes into it.

Steve: You have to get judges in, awards ready. Kent: We have to have awards made up, we have to have judges arranged, we have to have parkers arranged. There are quite a few ele-ments that go into the event. People to collect the money, people to talk, Kim always talks.

Steve: There also has to be a good partner-ship with Niello, to put this on there. You take over the dealership for the day pretty much. Kent: Pretty much, Niello is very generous for this event. They allow us to use a good portion of the dealership the entire day. They donate a substantial amount of money to help pay for the awards we give out, because the amount of money we take in doesn’t cover the cost to do the event. It’s probably true with a lot of other events that we have. We hold the planning meetings at Niello, they have been very generous and helpful.

Steve: In other ways as well, not just the Concours. They have certainly been a great partner throughout the year, and years with SVR. So, we have a big Concours coming up this year. Kent: We do, and we changed a little. Last year we decided to have a coral for people that weren’t entering the concours and actually it was open to anybody that wanted to come not just people that were members of the Porsche club. So we had a lot of customers of Niello, and Niello puts up a lot of effort and a lot of money into this event and it should involve more than just us (SVR) and we had well over 100 cars. A lot of people would come and go and I think it was quite successful so I think we’re going to carry that theme this year.

Steve: So do you have a hard time finding volunteers to help you? Kent: No we generally have enough people that are willing to help. We do have a hard time finding judges. It doesn’t seem that people like to go out on a hot day and crawl under cars so that is always a tough thing. So if anyone wants to be a judge, give me a call and we’ll start you out.

Steve: Well usually Kent and I are playing guitar together so this is a little different than what we usually do and we could probably do a whole segment on just the Speedsters, at some point. Kent: We could, that’s been a lot of fun.

Steve: We both really enjoy the Sacramento Valley Region Club. I’m really a new person coming in so I just enjoy talking to people that have been in the club for a long time and to find out from their perspective what it’s been like. As you said from Larry Wilson when the club was first started and all through the years up to now it’s just been fascinating to hear these stories. So if folks have questions and want to know more about the chair position for

Concours you can get a hold of Kent Brandon who is listed in the Drifter under the Committee Directory. Kent: yes the phone number is in there, call me.

Steve: Your email is in there, and we’re looking forward to great concours this summer. Well thanks a lot Kent for your time, it was a great interview and once again, this is Steve Barker, I’m the President of the SVR and this has been another addition on the “Spotlight on the Chairs.”

Another side of the “3 Day” restoration project

Preparing for Your First Event

• Prepare your Car: Take a few moments to check all of your fluid levels, oil, brake, and coolant fluid prior to the event. Check your tire pressures to make sure they are at factory specs and make sure your tires have plenty of tread, no less than 2/32nd of an inch of tread. You may also want to check with your Porsche service provider to see if they can perform a basic safety inspection prior to the event. Many service providers will provide this at no charge as a courtesy.

• Remove all loose items in your glove box and trunk as these items can get lose on course and present a danger. Loose items would include garage door openers, water bottles, computers and I pads, cell phones, tennis racquets and sporting equipment. Make sure your spare tire, if equipped and battery are securely fastened.

• Bring some sun screen, a hat, and wear comfortable clothing. Shoes must be closed toe, no sandals. A portable chair is also a great idea as well as an emergency tool kit that could also include an extra quart of oil, coolant and brake fluid.

• Purchase a good tire gauge as your tires will heat up after your first run by 2-5 psi and you will want to adjust pressures following each run.

• If you do not own and approved Schnell rated helmet, the club provides a limited number of loaner helmets that will be

issued at the time of registration. Helmets are required safety equipment for all drivers.

• Do some research on what to expect at your first autocross or contact someone on the club’s Ax team for additional information and questions?

• Bring some snacks

• Water is always provided courtesy of the club.

• Print and complete any pre-registration materials such as waivers and a copy of your registration receipt.

• Get a good night rest.

Participants

Any person, 18 years or older and who carries a valid California driver’s license may participate

Register for The Event

SVR encourages all participants to pre-register. If you register late you may be put on the waiting list. Though our events are open to all enthusiasts, priority is given to SVR and PCA members in good standing. Normally, registra-tion opens 30 days prior to a scheduled event.

Day of event registration is available at the trailer.

You will be asked to complete the following questions as part of your registration process:

• Are you a SVR or PCA member in good standing?

• Will you be able to arrive at 7:30 am to assist with course set-up?

• Do you have a car number?• In what class will you be competing?• Do you want to order lunch?• Will you be sharing a car with multiple

drivers?

Fees

Registration fees are $40 for PCA members and $50 for non-members for advanced registration. Registration fees are $45 for PCA members who register at the event and $50 for non-members.

Registration preference is given to PCA members

Arriving at the Event

Check-in and Registration:Check in and registration will be done at the SVR trailer.

If you have registered but not paid, our check in personnel will take your payment. Cash or check. No credit cards accepted.

You will be required to sign up for a run group and course work assignment if not pre-assigned in which case you will be informed.

Page 17: March 2014 - Porsche Club of Americascv.pca.org/drifter/2014/201403.pdf · Enjoying dinner at Wong’s and sharing stories, seated left to right: Rebecca Plourde, Gregg Plourde, Bob

Page 15Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.svr-pca.org

If you are in one of the two early run groups, you will be asked to grid your car for tech inspection at either the A or B grid.

You will complete a tech or score card which will include: name, address, phone number, email address, car number and class, type of car, and color. This completed card will then be placed on your car’s windshield for tech inspection.

If you do not own a helmet the club provides a limited number of approved safety helmets. You will be required to leave your driver’s license as a security deposit which will be returned when you return the helmet at the end of the event.

Tech Inspection:Once on grid with your score card placed on your windshield, your car will be inspected by a volunteer tech inspector. Should you fail the inspection, you will not be allowed to participate in the event until the safety issues are corrected to the satisfaction of the tech inspector. If you pass, the tech inspector will keep your tech card, sign the back of your tech card and turn it into the scoring team. You are good to go!

Course Walk:We encourage all novices and experienced drivers alike to do a course walk prior to the driver’s meeting. The course walk allows driver’s to preview the course and plan their ap-proach to each turn, apex and slalom. Though

a rookie course walk will also be conducted the more times you walk the course, the better your understanding of the challenges presented and the approach to each turn can be planned.

Driver’s Meeting:A mandatory driver’s meeting is conducted prior to the start of each event. At the driver’s meeting the autocross chair will go over basic safety rules and the general itinerary of the day’s competition to include:

• Rules governing our site use including restricted areas, access and procedures should an airplane land or taxi near our site.

• Safety• Danger zones• Flags • Cone Penalties• Timing, run groups and the number of runs

per run group• Course worker safety and the use of

radios. Your responsibility• Driver and instructor pairings

Rookie Course Walk:Prior to the start of the event, a rookie course walk will be conducted by the club’s chief driving instructor. This is highly recommended for novices or even by experienced autocross-ers. During the course walk, the instructor will be discussing how to approach the course, breaking zones, apexes, and other challenges presented in the course design. He or she

will also point out how apexes are marked, directional versus boundary cones, and the best approach to a slalom. The rookie course walk is a must for the first timer.

A course map is usually provided and provides an invaluable tool for all drivers to study and to plan their approach to the course. With as many as 15 plus turns, it is a benefit to put to memory the flow of the course.

Run Groups:The number of run groups is dependent on the number of cars participating in the event. Usually there are no more than 3 run groups of 20 cars and no less than two run groups per event. The order in which each run group competes, runs and rest is determined at the driver’s meeting by the Ax chairperson.

Hot Lap Format:SVR runs hot laps with no warm-up runs. Each run group will generally participate in 4-5 laps per run group and get approximately 8-10 timed laps per event. Your best time of the day will be recorded for event finishes and count towards points credit for year-end awards.

Once the Competition Starts:If you are not running in the first group and are working or resting, watch other cars on course. Watch their lines and braking points and where they are exiting their turns and applying throttle.

Watch other driver’s line and how they are approaching the entry and exit to each turn.

It’s Now Your Turn:Your run group is on grid and ready for your first run-

• All windows are to be lowered prior to entering the course as per PCA regula-tions.

• If your car is equipped with PSM, it is recommended you turn if off each time you run.

• If your car is equipped with PASM, it is recommended you set it to “sport”.

• If your AC is running, it is recommended it

be turned off.

• The grid volunteer is the safety and control volunteer who will direct you on grid and onto the start line. Pay attention and follow his or her instructions. They are the traffic cops and control the flow of cars onto the course.

• Once instructed onto the start line you will directed by the starter where to position your car for the start.

• You will sit at the start until it is safe to enter the course and will be flagged by the starter to proceed. You will not proceed onto the course unless flagged and authorized to do so by the starter. Prior to the start, the starter will want you to acknowledge you are ready to enter the course by pointing his finger or flag at you in which you will raise your hand to acknowledge.

You are on course:If you are a novice or first timer, you are likely to have an instructor riding along. Listen carefully to his or her instructions. Take your time and don’t try to get a fast time out of the gate on your first run. Use moderate throttle. Be smooth versus fast. It is more important to learn the line and the course. Most autocross courses can be quite intimidating to the novice as all they see is a sea of cones. It is more important to get a feel for the course and not DNF as a result of missing a turn or getting lost! Be patient and listen to your instructor.

Exiting the Course:At the exit, a volunteer will be seated at the finish line and will give you a “timing slip” which will indicate the time it took you to complete the course and any penalties you may have incurred. You must receive a timing slip and stop at this check point or you will receive a “DNF”, did not finish. You will then place your car on grid at the exact location you gridded to start the run until you are called upon for your next run.

Course Worker Stations:Scoring…. Two person station with respon-sibility of recording lap times on driver score sheets

Timing…..responsible for calling out lap times, re-setting timer, and notifying chair of any issues related to failures of the timing system.

Starter….responsible for flagging or starting cars on course when safe. Generally when a car is half way through a course when doing a hot lap format.

Timing slips….responsible for recording driver lap time on timing slip and presenting to driver before leaving course

Course Worker….responsible for reporting cone penalties and resetting of cones on course. It is critical that you watch the cars from the moment they enter your corner to the moment they exit. Failure to pay attention leads to inaccurate cone penalties or lack of reporting.

Course Worker Communication.... Responsible for recording cone penalties and notifying scor-ing, initiating red flags, and notifying course workers of downed cones not re-set

Announcer….announcing lap times with driver names and commentary

Gate.....mans secured and locked gate, early am job requires check in and insures completion of PCA and facility waivers. Only pre-registered drivers or their guests will be allowed into the site.

Grid…..controls traffic in grid allowing no more than one car at the start and up to two cars in grid ready. All other cars will remain in the grid parked positions

Clean up:all participants are asked to stay till the end of the event to assist with course breakdown and loading of trailer.

Driving Techniques:• Hand position on steer-

ing wheel: you should grip the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o’clock position for the best control

• Your seating position should be close enough that when you stretch your arms over the steer-ing wheel, your wrists are touching the wheel. In competitive driving, your seating position is generally closer to the steering wheel than street settings.

• Secure your seat belts snuggly to prevent you from shifting in your seat during high speed turning.

• Look ahead and not at your bumper. At speeds of 40-60 mph you are actually moving at 36 feet per second and in the sport of autocross, this is just a blink of the eye.

• Learn to feather your throttle as well as how to hit the pedal to the metal.

• Learn to modulate your breaking as well as when to maximize your stoppers and initiate your ABS.

• Hit the apexes whether late or early.

• Hit your braking points and always attempt to brake in a straight line.

• Get on the throttle at exit, but not until your car is pointed straight ahead.

• Don’t over grip the steering wheel with the “death grip” as your steering wheel is the conduit for feeling what your front tires are doing

• Be smooth

Guests and passengers:Guests are welcome to come to our events to observe the activities but will be required to pre-register and sign a releases waiver. Only qualified instructors, approved by SVR staff will be allowed to be passengers in cars which are participating in the day’s event.

Safety:Safety is the top priority of all SVR Autocross events and is as important as the fun you are having at the event. Therefore it is paramount to our mission to not only provide a fun event but one that is safe for participants as well as their vehicles. You are required to abide by all safety rules set forth by the guidelines provided by PCA national as well as to adhere to all guidelines required by the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds and our use permit.

And away we go!

March SVR Bulletin BoardUseful information which didn’t fit anywhere else....

2014 Porsche Parade UpdateBy Rik Larson, SVR Vice PresidentRegistration Opening Date ChangedThe opening date is now Tuesday, April 1st. The usual multi-page announcement about the event did not make it in the February Panorama so you will see it in the March issue.

parade2014.pca.orgThat is the place to go for all the latest informa-tion about the planned events. I noticed that the “Tours” section has been updated to reflect that there were be three primary tours, a tour for some off-roading in your Cayenne, and then some “Special Limited Tours”.

Parade Registration Guide? The primary reference guide that I use, the “Pre-Registration Guidelines”, has not been posted yet but should be available any day now. It should be available in Word or as a PDF when finalized. It is usually 18-20 pages long and contains all the information that you need to plan your entire week (or just part of it). I expect that it will be available in the “Registration” tab and the “Downloads and Forms” tab. If you want to sneak a peek as what it contains, check out the 2013 Parade website (parade2013.pca.org) and download it from there.

Want to talk person-to-person about the registration process? The SVR Board of Directors suggested that I schedule a short meeting with folks that may want to discuss the Parade registration process in more detail. So I am planning on doing something at the end of March (Round Table Pizza?). And as a second option, I am available after the first Saturday breakfast on March 1st at Waffle Square.

Are you on my NEWS distribution list? There are now over 65 primary members (100 + total people) on my distribution list for updates regarding the Porsche Parade. It is easy to get on the list. Just send me an e-mail at [email protected] or give me a call at 916.481.6084.

Car Care Clinic 2014By Jim McMahen, SVR Member

It may be a little early to start thinking about washing, waxing and other car maintenance issues, but mark your calendar for the Car Care Clinic on May 10th. Past clinics have been well-attended and this year’s event should be no different. A continental breakfast will be served at 9:00 A.M. followed at 10:00 A.M. by demon-strations/discussion on surface cleaning and preparation by David Yamada, paintless dent removal, wheel repair and refinishing, “clear bra” for your windshield and Jake Tomlinson on “how to deal with your insurance company”. After the demonstrations we will clay, seal and wax six volunteer Porsches. There will be a $10.00 fee to cover the products and materi-als used during the event.

Participants will learn through hands-on practice how to properly clay, seal and wax a car.

Meet at Kim Nelson’s home at 2771 Ponderosa Road, Shingle Springs, CA 95682Phone 916.337.7716

What is a Poker Run?By Cookie Anderson,SVR Membership Director

It is not a Rally or a timed event. It is a leisure tour with stops along the way. If you have played Poker you know that you have five cards. There will be five stops along the route chosen by Jerry Cupler our Co-Host of the Poker Run. Each stop you will draw a card for as many hands as you have purchased. Before you draw you must tell the head dealer which hand you are drawing for. This will be a fun tour ending at the Black Bear Diner for lunch. We will have door prizes for everyone. Hope to see you all there.

February Dummkopf AwardBy Jim McMahen, SVR Dummkopf Chair

“We are never happy until we learn to laugh at ourselves”

It came to my attention at the February dinner meeting that an incident involving a coat needed to receive recognition and nomination of the prestigious “Dummkopf Award”.

After the SVR Christmas party, a coat was left behind and the cleanup committee thought it belonged to Noah Bentley. Noah was called and he went to Cookie Anderson’s house to look at the coat. Noah told Cookie that it was the same brand as his but it was not his coat. However, Noah thought that it could be his wife Susan’s coat. After picking Susan up at the airport, they went back to Cookie’s house so Susan could see if the coat was hers. When Susan examined the coat, she told Noah that it was in fact his coat and that she had worn it to the Christmas party. Unfortunately for Noah he didn’t even recognize his own coat and because this all transpired at a SVR event, Noah graciously accepted the Dummkopf Award.

With March here already, it’s not too early to choose and prepare for

upcoming events on the SVR and Zone 7 Region Calendar. And with the 2014 PCA Porsche Parade in nearby beautiful Monterey in June, and the all new Porsche Werks Reunion during the 2014 Monterey Car Week in August, you have a lot to choose from. The Werks Reunion will bring together not only PCA members, but will include as well, other Porsche related clubs. Look for special displays and “surprises” at the Rancho Cañada Golf Club.

Zone 7 Concours Schedule includes eight events starting with the Yo-semite Region Concours on May 18 and ending with the October 5 event at Porsche of Livermore hosted by Diablo Region. Our own SVR event will be June 8 at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. Not ready for your Porsche to be judged? Show your car in the Display area and enjoy the festivities. This will give you the opportunity to visit the Niello Showroom and Parts Depart-ment to order that special whatzit.

And put May 10 on your calendar and come out for the Car Care Clinic organized by Jim McMahen and hosted by the Nelson’s and learn techniques to prepare for the first Concours, or just keep your Porsche (think investment) looking good and protected from the elements. Jim promises three presenters and time to work on the “volunteer” cars.

One of a tire’s primary tasks is to carry the weight of the vehicle. But any-one who’s ever had a flat tire knows

that the tire doesn’t really carry the load...the inflation pressure inside it does! Using the correct inflation pressure not only provides the appropriate load capacity, it also enhances the tire’s performance, durability and contribution to vehicle fuel economy.

Tires are typically inflated with air that’s a combination of roughly 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2) and 1% miscellaneous gases. And since all gasses expand when heated and contract when cooled, tire inflation pressures rise and fall with changes in temperature by about one psi (pound per square inch) for every 10° Fahrenheit change in temperature. This is one of the reasons it’s recommended that tire pressures be checked early in the morning before ambient temperatures, the sun’s radiant heat, or the heat generated by driving causes the tire pressure to rise.

And while tires appear solid, if you could see their microscopic structure you would find that rubber looks a bit like strands of cooked spa-ghetti stuck together. These molecular strands continuously stretch to and from their relaxed state every time the tire rolls and conspire to allow some of the gas to escape through the microscopic spaces between the rubber molecules (called permeation or diffusion). It’s been estimated that up to one psi of pressure may escape each month a tire is in service.

Fortunately compressed air is often available at gas stations, tire stores and auto repair shops. Sometimes it’s free, while other times it’s only available from coin-operated compressors. Unfortunately the compressed air often provided contains varying degrees of moisture depending on relative humidity and the compressor system’s ability to dry the air by removing moisture.

So what can we do to help maintain more constant tire pressures? We could change what we inflate our tires with.

Pure nitrogen has been used to inflate critical tire applications for years, primarily because it doesn’t support moisture or combustion. These include racing tires (Indy Car, Formula 1, NAS-CAR), aircraft tires (commercial and military) and heavy-duty equipment tires (earthmovers and mining equipment). The challenge facing nitrogen inflation hasn’t been its application; it’s been its method of supply and cost.

Nitrogen molecules have a more difficult time escaping through the microscopic spaces that exist between a tire’s rubber molecules. Nitro-gen is a “slow” inactive gas labeled as an inert

Nitrogen and your TiresBy Ron Reagan, SVR Technical Chair

gas due to its nonreactive nature with many materials. Oxygen on the other hand is a “fast” active gas that reacts with many materials called “oxidation.” Additionally nitrogen is a dry gas that doesn’t support moisture while oxygen combined with hydrogen makes water (H2O).

What are the effects of using pure nitro-gen to inflate tires?

Nitrogen is a gas and is still affected by changes in ambient temperature (about one psi for every 10° Fahrenheit). Nitrogen filled tires will require pressure be added during the fall/winter months as ambient temperatures and tire pressures drop. Nitrogen is good but can’t change the laws of physics.

Nitrogen reduces the loss of tire pressure due to permeation through rubber over time by about 1/3. This helps maintain the vehicle’s required tire pressures a little longer, but doesn’t eliminate the need for monthly tire pressure checks. This is good for people who don’t maintain their vehicles well.

Nitrogen is non-corrosive and will reduce oxida-tion and rust due to the absence of oxygen and moisture. This will help minimize wheel corrosion to promote better bead sealing. Tires that are used routinely will be replaced long before any life benefit would be received by using Nitrogen. This is most beneficial for drivers who drive their vehicles infrequently (car collectors, track drivers, snow tire users, motor home owners, etc).

Nitrogen is a dry gas and will not support moisture that could contribute to corrosion of the tire’s steel components (bead, sidewall reinforcement and belts) due to the absence of moisture over extended periods of time. However it’s important to remember that atmospheric pressure is constantly pushing oxygen and moisture into the rubber from the outside of the tire. This is especially good for low mileage drivers who don’t wear out their tires quickly or those that run average annual mileages but use long wearing radial (60K and 80K warranted) tires.

Nitrogen assures more consistent pressure increases due to increases in operating temperatures in a racing environment because of the absence of moisture. This is especially good for participants in track days, high-performance drivers education schools and road racing.

Drivers should use standard air if pressure adjustments are required when a local source of nitrogen can’t be found during a trip. While this reduces the benefit of higher nitrogen content, it is far better than running the tires underinflated in search of a source. Often the original nitrogen provider will refill the tires for free or a nominal cost when the driver returns to his hometown.

Several service equipment manufacturers have developed small, on-site nitrogen generator systems that use the selective permeation principle to separate oxygen and moisture from the shop’s compressed air lines to capture nitrogen. The key component is a membrane that separates the gasses. Each module contains hollow fibers that allow the oxygen and water vapor to be selectively removed, resulting in a source of nearly pure nitrogen that is kept in a separate storage tank until it is used to inflate tires.

The nitrogen generator, storage tank and filling system aren’t free and the dealer is entitled to some return on his investment. It’s time-consuming for a technician to bleed air from the tires (sometimes requiring several purges during the initial inflation) to achieve the desired nitrogen purity, however some of the latest equipment automatically goes through several purge cycles without requiring the technician’s participation.

While inflating tires with nitrogen never results in 100% purity, most nitrogen service equip-ment providers advise that reaching at least a 93% to 95% purity is necessary to receive the desired benefits. This ratio is normally achieved by initially purging the tires of existing air (down to just a few PSI) and then refilling them with nitrogen. The purge/fill cycle is often repeated to achieve the desired level of nitrogen purity.NOTE: Tires should never be subjected to a vacuum in an effort to eliminate the oxygen. Distorting the tire as shown in the accompany-ing picture can be as detrimental to the internal structure of the tire as running over potholes and road hazards. So what should drivers do?

Overall, inflating tires with nitrogen won’t hurt them and may provide some minimal benefits. Is it worth it? If you go someplace that provides free nitrogen with new tires, why not? Addition-ally some service providers offering reasonable prices of about $5 per tire (including periodic adjustments for the life of the tire) to a less reasonable $10 per tire (with additional costs for subsequent pressure adjustments) or more as part of a service contract, which we believe exceeds the value of nitrogen’s benefit.

Rather than pay extra for nitrogen, most drivers would be better off buying an accurate tire pressure gauge and checking and adjusting their tire pressures regularly.
