From the Driver’s Seat

A Look BackThanks to Mike & Emily Willis, we had a fabulous April Dinner Meeting at Español Italian Restaurant. Don & Michelle Joe, owners of Fabrication Specialties, joined us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fabrica-tion Specialties. Customer appreciation gifts were given to those in attendance. As I had lost my voice, Vice President Andy Leight led the business part of the meeting. Some there took advantage of the fact that I could not “talk back” at them to razz me, and in a couple of cases make sure I was up to date with their views. (You are free to guess who.) I am told the Railroad Museum tour was a success. We had a nice informal breakfast gathering at Karen’s Bakery in Folsom. Our first autocross of the year was well attended. It’s good to be back in the racing business! The first weekend in May we had the Driving and Garage Tour in the Foothills. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a nice spring day. That Sunday our second autocross of the year was rained out. If you got discouraged by the weather last month, check the schedule and come out to the next autocross event. May also brought us an unusual Dinner Meeting at the Towe Auto Museum, featuring a chance to “roast” Phil Lawrence, listen to some live entertainment by The Kern River Band, and look at a whole lot of beautiful cars. What more could you ask for? Mid-May brought the Spring Flowers Rally and the San Simeon Tour. I understand that you could bring any car to the rally ex-cept a Goggomobile. I wonder if anyone did try to drive one of those! In San Simeon, I got

to catch the night tour I had to miss last year, and the drive was fun in both directions. For those of you who have not been on this trip, there are lots of things to do in addition to the Hearst Castle. Ask Jim McMahen about those Chocolate Éclairs, and don’t miss this tour next time around. Late May featured another fine Driver Education event. These really are fun and offer excellent training in car control from our certified instructors.

A Look AheadJune brings us to the Village Green Bar and Grille for our dinner meeting followed by the Shriners/PCA Zone 7 Concours which may include an SCCA autocross. After Father’s Day comes Parade, and the Chocolate Tour! Other Regions will be running other activi-ties as well. Please check your Drifter or our web site for information. Speaking of our web site, Mike Willis is changing the car on the front page frequently. Check out the site to find out if your car has appeared. Be sure to sign up early for all Club events to make sure you can get in on the fun! At the next event you attend, please go up and personally thank the people who have made the effort to provide you with a fun activity. Thank them all, event coordinators and all those who helped.

Help NeededYour Porsche Club is looking for a Chair for our rally events. I just know that there is someone who has been wanting to become more involved but has not found the right time. Well, this is it; come make a difference. We have a good season of rallies already planned; this is an excellent time to step into this position! It is not too early to volunteer to be the next Editor of SVR’s award winning Drifter. In addition to the undying gratitude of the SVR membership, you also get one of those spiffy white badges.

SafetySpring time is here with summer approach-ing, and we are all excited about getting reacquainted with our cars our on some twisty roads again. It’s time to make sure that everything is ready to roll. You’ll want to check those old lug nuts to see that they are all at the right torque; we don’t want any wheels coming off, now! While you’re chang-ing out and topping off fluids, don’t forget the brakes! Examine tires for wear and sidewall cracking; if in doubt, go see an expert. On the subject of tires, one local tire company—not an SVR sponsor/advertiser—refused to repair or balance a tire due only to the tire’s age being over 4 years. I verified this policy, and I do take a personal issue with it. Many of us do not drive our Porsches enough to wear out our tires in less than 4 years. We are also used to buying long-life tires for our other vehicles as well. When a tire company who sells high-performance Porsche-fitting and long-life tires decides not to rebalance or repair solely on the basis of age, they have forgotten customer service. Please support all of our advertisers and thank them for their sponsorship. Remember many of them are Porschephiles too, and they do have our best interests in mind when they make their business decisions.

Tour the Scharffen Berger Chocolate FactorySunday, June 26 $29 per person

The tour will be followed by Luncheon Buffet at Café Cacao with Decadent Chocolate Pave Cake for dessert. Meet at Tower Theater, 16th and Broadway, 9:30 am.

Closed-Toed shoes are required. Sorry, no children under 10 allowed.

Drifting Back

30 Years Ago (June 1975)Congratulations in the June issue of The Drifter went to Clint deWitt for winning the E Production race during the SCCA regional race weekend at Sears Point in April. Clint was driving his new “Super Pumpkin,” a 356B Porsche Roadster that was recently purchased from Harald Kir-berg (known as “Crazy Harald”). Dennis Gallagher advertised his 1957 356A Speedster for sale in the June issue of The Drifter. The car was “near concours condition,” all original, and had 17,000 miles on a rebuilt engine. He wanted $7,500. The June 1 Zone 7 autocross by Yo-semite Region was held at Cal Expo, and the June 29 Zone 7 autocross by Sierra Nevada Region was at Stead AFB. The an-nual Georgetown Hillclimb was held June

14-15 with headquarters at the Prospector Saloon near Coloma. The June 21 Rally de Bus by Rik Lar-son, a two-hour rally school in a school bus, was especially designed for those go-ing to the 20th Porsche Parade in Seattle. The event started at Carrows restaurant on Zinfandel at US 50 and finished at Shakey’s in Rancho Cordova. As it turned out, only Michael & Mary Peters benefited from this training as they took an 8th place finish in the Parade rally unequipped class.

20 Years Ago (June 1985)Seventeen cars turned out for the June 18 Historic Tour of Amador and Calaveras, chaired by Barbara Rodriguez and Lin Hokana, for a visit of historic spots of interest in the Mother Lode country, some private and seldom seen by the general public. At Fiddletown, the group received a guided tour of the Chew Kee Oleta, an ancient Chinese pharmacy still intact and one of the best remaining examples in Cali-fornia of the 1850s style of “rammed earth” construction. The day ended with awards and late brunch at Hotel Leger, 8304 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill. Tour quiz awards

(a bottle of Amador County’s finest vin de blanc) were given in the Leger’s historic bar, which had seen a lot since its last re-model in 1874, and were received by Garth Mason (best male), Judy Almquist (best female), and Allen & Dolores Weddle (best team). In the June issue of The Drifter, George Morley announced the June 21 SVR T&D rally which counted toward the Sacramento Valley Sports Car Council (SVSCC) 1985 Sweepstake Series. As always, the event started from the Food Circus in Arden Fair and finished at a pizza parlor in Woodland. Twenty-nine rally cars participated.

10 Years Ago (June 1995)The June 8 dinner meeting, arranged by Jerry & Patti Thomas, was held on the shaded and cool patio of Carmelitas in Fair Oaks and featured hot Mexican food and cold Mexican beer—the perfect combina-tion. The June 17-18 Kinder-Kroetz Tahoe Tour drew raves in the Club officer columns of The Drifter. Some SVR members took home tro-phies from the June 11 Zone 7 Concours event hosted by Loma Prieta Region at PartsHeaven in Hayward. Jim Phillips, Kent Brandon, and Hank Woods finished first, second and fifth, respectively in the “Street” Class. Phil Lawrence and Charles & Helen Rushing finished first and second in the “Wash & Shine” Class. Phil’s score of 199.50 was only 0.5 away from a perfect score of 200. After convincing County officials that autocross events were compatible with the good use of Mather Field, the SVR autocross season resumed June 24. That’s the good news. The bad news was the temperature; it was 107 degrees! Neverthe-less, 12 brave drivers turned out, including Greg Peart, Masuo Robinson, and Tim Fleming, and each was rewarded with six runs. The 4th Annual Swap Meet and Con-cours at Niello Porsche on June 25 was a smashing success thanks to hard work by event chairs Jim & Pam Phillips and the many SVR workers: Kern & Tyler Breaux, Mary Ann Blount, Cora Brandon, Rik Larson, Dwight Mitchell, Helen Rushing, Mike & Vicki Willis, Tom & Tambra Kroetz, Greg Peart, Jim McMahen, Bill Keegan, Ryan Phillips, and Tim & Ryan Fleming.

Speaking of Membership

By Tom SissonMembership Director

Welcome new members and Transfers! SVR has 581 regular members and 16 dual members

EventsLots of events are being planned for all

members in the coming months. We want to see as many new members coming out as possible.

Keep Your SVR Records Up To Date!Send your new email address and any other changes to me for the membership files.

MembershipMembership continues to fluctuate. While new members join each month, a lot of other members drop out. However, the number of members that had to be deleted is down, and

many of those who could be on the verge of expiration have renewed—more than any recent month. National seems to be get-ting its records cleaned up and improved as well.

Special CongratulationsRay & Sara Clements and Dave Simich have been members for 25 years.

The SocialScene

June … how did that happen? Half the year is gone already! Since I wrote last, Buzz and I attended our first Zone 7 Concours Judging School hosted by Gary Lieber at Stevens Creek Porsche in San Jose. You got it; I can now judge your car! Line ‘em up; I’m ready. Okay, maybe that’s not in my job description as Social Director. However, I did get to exer-cise my new skills at the Diablo Region 20th Annual Wash & Shine in Danville. What a great time I had. On to Club business: Last month we had Kim Nelson and Ra-chel Cocuzzi’s Spring Driving and Garage Tour to the Childs’ home in El Dorado Hills. Oh, I would love to have a garage like that! We had great food, a great tour (even though some of us were “other Porsches”), and lots of fun as always with this Club. If you are new to the Club, please come out and join us on any event. You will love it! Kim also put on our May dinner meeting and the “roasting” of our very own Phil Lawrence who should be settled in in West Virginia by now. The Towe Auto Museum was the perfect setting for the party. Phil’s favorite food was served: pizza and ice cream! It was so much fun and such a big turn out for a going away party. We will miss Phil! Mike & Emily Willis hosted the San Simeon Tour, and once again, it was fabulous. It was my first time on a long tour and it was great. Buzz and I each took our own cars. Do you think we are a little obsessed with our Porsches? I think The Donald could live at Hearst Castle and not know the difference! What a place. I hadn’t been there since I was

13 years old … 10 years ago … yeah, that’s it! Hmm, I think my nose just got longer! For June we have fun, fun, fun in the sun. First off on June 4 is G24 member Nikolas Rechtiene’s Capitol Cellars Wine Tour. Everyone will meet out at Capitol Cellars in Roseville at 11:00 am and have great tasting and lunch! Contact Nikolas at 916-803-6608 for your reservation. Frederick & Susan Rauch are hosting our June dinner meet-ing at the Village Green Bar and Grill once again. It was great food last time and I’m sure it will be again! Call or email Frederick for your reservation at 916-989-3199 or [email protected]. The big event for June is the Shriner’s Concours D’Elegance. It is at Mather Field this year. Please check our web site for more information regarding registration. Just click on “Concours” and the link will be right there! Thanks again, Mike Willis, for stepping in as interim webmaster. Chocolate … what a sweet word. If choco-late is your thing, then come to Herb & Jan Hoover’s Chocolate Tour. It is on Sunday, June 26. Space is limited so call Jan at 916-424-5163. Buzz-n-Bobs Tour de Garage is being moved to a yet to be determined date in July—more details soon. Next month be sure to look for informa-tion on Frederick’s Wine Tour. The July din-ner meeting will be hosted by G24 members Ed & Shelley Busuttil and will be at Vince’s Italian Restaurant in Elk Grove. It’s going to be another yummy dinner. The big event for July is 2005 MPH—Mammoth Porsche Happening! Rick Weidner and his team have done a lot of hard work to make this a great, hopefully annual, event. It is scheduled for July 29-31. Rik Larson is taking reserva-tions; contact him at 916-481-6084 (6-9 pm only). Once again, thank you for all your par-ticipation in events and we look forward to a Porsche-ful summer!

Rally

SeminarsA big thanks goes to Keith McMahan for presenting the rally seminars earlier this year. Because we had to cancel the final (and 4th) session, the experts offered to run as a naviga-tor on the Spring Flowers event for anyone who asked. Check back next month to see how they did. At the same time, we want to thank Ron Kain of IPB-Autosport for providing the classroom setting.

32nd Running of Summer SolsticeYes, Yosemite Region is presenting this easy time and distance rally (see information on page 16). It is hard to believe that this rally has been running longer than the Carrera de Sierra event (by only a couple of years). Come out and join in the fun on this Saturday event in the Central Valley. It will be the fall before we have another event.

Board MeetingHighlights

By Kevin DoughertyTreasurer

Call To OrderThe Great Porsche Master, Tom Sisson called the meeting to order at 6:24 pm. Six minutes later, Andy Leight came in and took over in a bloodless coup stating he thought the meeting started at 6:30. We all believed him. In attendance were Andy Leight, Kevin Dougherty, Julia Lynn, Tom Sisson, Aleece & Elliot Hoffmann, Frederick D. Rauch, Matt Deter, and Kim Nelson. Absent due to illness were Jeff Kinder, and Steve Goltz. We hope they are both feeling better. Kevin again took the minutes.

Old BusinessMinutes: The March minutes were reviewed and approved.Plaque: Kevin shared a few variations he had in mind. Kim brought up a suggestion to get some ideas from Rachel Cocuzzi as she may be able to do something in glass. Kim is to discuss with Rachel and get back to Kevin or have Rachel get in touch with Kevin.Tahoe Tour: The tour to Lake Tahoe sched-uled for June 17-19 has been canceled due to problems booking rooms in the summer and meeting a nightly minimum.50th Anniversary DVD: This did not get shown at the last dinner meeting. It is hoped to get it up and running at the May dinner meeting. This DVD has a bit part in it by our departing friend and long-time SVR member Phil Lawrence. How fitting that the May dinner meeting will honor Phil before he leaves us for West Virginia.Towe Auto Museum: Our past president and Towe docent Kim Nelson stated that the Towe called him to thank us for the check we sent them toward a PCA sign at the museum. This sign will hang in the “Car Club Cav-alcade” area of the museum with the other 25 or so car clubs who will have their signs hung up there. Kim will be assisting the Towe with our sign.Shriners Concours Update: Kim updated us on this event. Things are progressing smoothly. He also passed out registration forms.

New BusinessMPH: Kim discussed the Mammoth Porsche Happening Tour July 29-31 in the Mammoth Lakes area. There will be a fun

concours among other activities yet to be determined. The Board approved a budget and agreed to send a deposit when one was requested.Dinner Meetings: Tom shared that he had been approached by several people concerned that the price of the dinner meetings has been rising. A long discussion ensued. A look at prices throughout the year saw that there were high and low budget dinner meetings. One fact that stuck out was that the atten-dance at dinner meetings keeps rising no matter the price. The Board agreed to keep an eye on the situation and vary the cost of dinners throughout the year as usual.Karen’s Bakery Breakfast: Andy reported on the great time everyone had at member Karen Holmes’ restaurant in Folsom the Sat-urday prior. There were about 20 members there at various times throughout the morn-ing. There was talk of future events there.Business Cards: Frederick brought up the idea for Board members to be supplied with SVR business cards. A discussion ensued and in the end it was felt they would be useful. Frederick will approach Rik Larson to see what kind of price Enterprise Print-ing can give us on cards. Other Regions do this already.Garage Tour: Kim reported that the May 7 tour was full and there is a waiting list.Cancellations: Frederick reported that his April 23 wine tour was cancelled. The Rally School April 24 also was canceled due to lack of interest.Banners: Let it be known by all that Andy is the official keeper of the SVR banners (all 9 of them).

Board Member ReportsAutocross (Matt Deter): The first Autocross of the season was on April 2. The event earned more than budgeted, with 47 drivers participating.Competition (Frederick D. Rauch): Fred-erick announced that SVR has three certified driving instructors: Frederick D. Rauch, Rich McGlumphy and Glen Brooksby. Twenty PCA members attended the last Driver Edu-cation, and thirty folks attended the Thurs-day evening dinner prior to the event.Newsletter (Elliot & Aleece Hofmann): The May Drifter went to the printer on April 20. Elliot and Aleece are now working on the membership directory and the new computer. The March and September 2004 issues of The Drifter were submitted for the Parade newsletter contest, and we are expected to compete well in our class.Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): Tom has sold a

lot of goodies recently, the largest amount in a long time! Sales have been brisk, not only to new members, but to old ones replacing apparel that has worn out over the years.Membership (Tom Sisson): There are 581 current members and 16 dual members. There were no members deleted this month. We added 11 new members. Tom did note that 51 memberships expire in May, but hoped all would be renewed.Treasurer (Kevin Dougherty): The Club is in good financial shape.Social ( Julia Lynn): Phil Lawrence led his last SVR tour of the California Rail Museum in Old Sacramento. Twelve to fifteen people toured. There were 64 members at the April dinner meeting. Upcoming fun stuff includes the Capital Cellars Tour, Garage Tour in June and the Chocolate Tour.

AdjournmentThe meeting was adjourned at 8:32 pm. The next meeting will be held at RPM Motors-ports on May 18, 2005.

Well, it’s the middle of the racing season in Zone 7 now, and I got an idea for this article from past Zone 7 Rep and veteran autocrosser Dwight Mitchell. You may not realize it, but the Snell Foundation will soon be certifying the new “Snell 2005” stickered helmets. So you might ask: what does that matter? The first thing that normally comes to mind is that the oldest helmets now allowed in most driver education and autocross events (Snell 95) will soon be disallowed. Even if your helmet meets a more current allowed standard, you need to still make sure it is in good shape. Since many helmets in use

are older than 5 years, you need to inspect them frequently to ensure they are in proper shape. Check the outside shell. Is it cracked? Is there any delamination? Next check the fabric liner. Is the fabric torn? This fabric in Snell SA helmets is fire retardant. Gently pull back the fabric liner. Is the Styrofoam liner flaking, dented, loose within the shell, or stained from hair oil or products? Next put the helmet on and see if it still has the proper fit. It should be snug around the perimeter of your head, and should not feel loose as you shake your head. Check the straps. Are they frayed? If you find that your helmet does not pass this inspection you should definitely replace it as soon as you can, and not wait for a Snell 2005 rated helmet. Five years is the recommended life span of a modern helmet, and proper care and use of a helmet is vital to a safe track day or autocross.

Mammoth Porsche HappeningNow that you have toured the coast on the San Simeon Tour, come tour the Mam-moth area of the High Sierra with Rick Weidner and the MPH committee. This low-key multi-day tour runs from July 29 to July 31 with lots of opportunities for activities of your own choosing. We will leave on Friday from El Do-rado Hills and cross the Sierras on one of the many passes, making a lunch stop along US395. After enjoying a beautiful drive to the Mammoth area, the group will gather for a casual social hour. Din-ner plans will be up to you; travel just a few blocks into town for plenty of op-tions. Possible Saturday activities include: boutique shopping, a tram ride to brunch, natural hot springs, horseback riding, hiking, and biking. We’ll get together again in the late afternoon to socialize and discuss the day’s activities. Saturday night dinner will again be on your own; ask your fellow members for their recom-mendations at the social. You can arrange your own unofficial small tour groups for the drive home Sunday, or go your own way. One possible route over the Sierras includes Tioga Pass into Yosemite Na-tional Park. We are inviting the other Regions in Zone 7 to join us as well as the folks in Zone 8 (Southern California).

Tour Sign UpThere will be a tour fee of $10 per car to cover the goodies at the socials on Friday and Saturday. You must sign up for the tour and make your lodging reservations separately. To register for the tour, contact Rik Larson at 916-481-6084 (6-9 pm only) or by email at [email protected].

Lodging ReservationsTo make your lodging reservations, see the information in the ad on page 11. If you want to stay an extra night, book it at that time also. So far we have at least three couples staying over on Sunday night.

ALL THE FLOWERS WERE IN BLOOM… Yep, it is already the merry month of June. Get ready for warm weather with Club polo shirts ($30), T-shirts with the Porsche script ($18), and base-ball shirts with the Porsche script ($20). All are available in sizes S to XXL, in various colors, and are guaranteed to make you more attractive to your significant Porsche other…within reason!

The hot new items are cool caps ($15 and $16), and even cooler T-shirts with the Porsche script in outline form ($20). Both the script and the T-shirts come in various colors, and are so cool they might even drop your tempera-ture!

Ask to see the Porsche patches that can be sewn on any garment—well, almost any—they wouldn’t work well on your skivvies.

Since you will be driving your car more in this nice weather, you need to have your PCA and SVR car badges ($18 and $15) prominently displayed.

Check out the SVR web site at http://www.derporsche.net/ for the Goodie Store catalog in cyberspace. Just click on the Goodie Store.

Don’t be a piker—spend some of that cash! Easy come, easy go!

Say, why do we call some one a “piker”? I thought you would never ask. “Piker” comes not from climbing but from walking. In the early nineteenth century, especially in the United States, turnpikes were being built everywhere as part of a revolution in transportation. Since it was not yet common for government to build such improvements, private companies often constructed them. Naturally, they did it for a profit, which they got by charging tolls on vehicles using their road. But if you were on foot, you didn’t have to pay. People who walked from town to town to save the toll money were called “pikers,” from the word “turnpike.”

This has been another free educational moment from the Goodie Store. See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, write him at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, call 209-296-5352 or email [email protected]. Items can be mailed for a small shipping/handling fee, usually $5 or less.

In his March column our Technical Chair Roger Walker wrote about the difficulty of dealing with a dead battery in our newer Porsches. You can’t get to the dead battery because the electric hood release does not work without power. I just noticed in my manual that our 2002 Boxster S has a power lug in the fuse box located in the driver’s footwell. This power lug is made to connect to an external battery in the event that the main battery is dead. With this, you can get enough power into the system to open the front compartment. This will most likely also set off the alarm, so be prepared! I have no idea when Porsche implemented this feature, but you may want to check your manual before taking more drastic steps

20 The Drifter

With apologies to Mr. Letterman, we inter-rupt your regularly scheduled groveling to bring you …

The Top 21 Reasons To Be SVR’s Next Newsletter Editor21. Because one full-time job just isn’t

enough.20. Fame and fortune! Okay, not like Paris

Hilton or anything … but hey, over 500 people will suddenly know who you are. And lots of ‘em will thank you for your good work, too. How’s that for an ego boost?

19. Surely you have better time management skills than we do. Doesn’t everyone?

18. You’ll get one of those nifty white name badges that make you look all important and stuff—for free! And they let you vote at the Board meetings and everything, all official-like.

17. Free newsletter subscriptions—from almost all of the Zone 7 Regions.

16. SVR’s most … er … opinionated member just moved to West “by God” Virginia. On the other hand, Phil Lawrence did submit a lot of photos for “People, Places & Porsches.” Hmm.

15. Discover mad skillz you never knew you had: graphic design, layout, photography, copy editing, …. Hey, if a mechanical engineer and SAS programmer can do it, surely you can!

14. You’re always saying how you don’t get enough email.

13. You know how you’ve been saying that you and your mate need to spend more quality time working together as a team? Well, we’re pretty sure that co-editing magazines has killed no more relation-ships than rallying.

12. Show off all your l33t photography! Sure, you can put your own car on the cover every month. Why not?

11. Now you’ll have an excuse to buy that RoboMower. C’mon … you know you want to! (You made it to “The Fin-ish Line” in your August 2004 Drifter, right?)

10. Network, network, network! There’s no better way to meet people in the Club.

9. You can count on that gourmet grub from Subway, accented by the hum of

kart motors, to sustain you through those marathon Board meetings.

8. The Drifter Editor’s new notebook computer has to live on someone’s desk. It might as well be yours!

7. Find out just why Rik Larson really is all that and a bag o’chips.

6. Phenomenal cosmic powers … sans itty-bitty living space! Okay, so you’re not exactly Aladdin’s Genie, but you do have the power of the press.

5. Vacation, schmacation … PCA weekend tours are all anyone really needs.

4. You could win a trophy at Parade … without swabbing the crevices of your engine compartment with Q-Tips.

3. Say goodbye to boredom!2. Who says there ain’t no such thing as a

free lunch? Two new member tours a year, baby!

And the number one reason to be SVR’s next Newsletter Editor …

1. No one will try to recruit you to run for President as long as you’re doing The Drifter .
