100 years old! 100 years old! 100 years old!
Dear Friends,
Summer events are in full swing and the county fair is fast approaching. Fair time is always a busy and exciting
time for 4-H & FFA families. Remember the focus of the fair experience should be the learning and growth of each
4-H and FFA member. The knowledge and skills gained are far more important than the results of a competitive
event, animal or project exhibited. You are all winners because of the new knowledge and skills you have gained!
We have a number of opportunities for 4-H members coming up. Please take advantage of these educational
tools.
Have a safe & fun summer!
Tammy Muller
County Youth Coordinator
Tammy’s advise: “Don’t wait until the last week
before fair to work on your exhibits and goal sheets.
Remember to take pictures for your write ups. A few
pictures will help tell your story.”

Advanced Feeder Class Winners
Fourteen 4-H & FFA members participated in the annu-al Advanced Cattle Feeder Class on Monday, June 19 at the Edgewood Livestock Commission in Edge-wood. Animals were weighed and ultrasound scanned, and the youth worked with ISU Extension and Outreach staff and feed industry representatives to calculate their total cost of production. They used their actual feed fed with fixed costs for many feed ingredients, yardage, chute costs, feeder prices, and their actual costs for any additional costs. The youth were then interviewed by a judge while the carcass results of their calves were calculated. The judge placed the youth based on their knowledge and interview skills, their cost of pro-duction, calf performance, visual conformation of the cattle and market readiness. A showcase was then held to exhibit their animals for the audience with the participants explaining the performance and costs for their project, and the judge sharing his comments and thoughts. The junior division (grades 4-6) winner was Nate Shir-broun, Farmersburg. Lane Orr, Elkader was the inter-mediate (grades 7-8) winner and Ted Hilgerson, Elka-der was the senior division (grades 9-12) winner. There were 4 divisions in the carcass competition. Win-ner of the market beef pen was Mindy Keehner, Monona. Molly Kann, Guttenberg won the market beef individual class. The dairy steer market pen was won by Jordan Wegmann, Edgewood and the dairy individu-al carcass winner was Ted Hilgerson, Elkader. Many exhibitors in the 4-H & FFA market beef show see only the show ring aspect of beef production, not the real-world aspects of feeding cattle for today’s mar-ketplace. The Advanced Cattle Feeder Class focuses more on the real-world aspects of feeding to a target market, focusing on the cost of production, and meat quality .
