THANK YOU

Dear Church Family,

Thank you all so very much for the scholarship that I received for my graduate studies at

Lenoir-Rhyne University. I recently began my journey to obtain a Master’s Degree in Occupa-

tional Therapy and I am sincerely grateful for the constant love and support shown by each one

of you. As always, prayers are appreciated as I continue my education.

Sincerely,

Paige Sappenfield

FBCR YOUTH SCHEDULE AND NEWS

Remember we will not be having Wednesday nights during the month of June. Our first book

study will be on June 20th at Jeff & Beth Archer’s home (6:00-7:30 PM). This is a combined

book study with the youth from FUMC next door.

PASSPORT

We will be eating lunch during the service so that we can leave and make it to Averett Uni-

versity on time (Danville, VA). We’ll load up the bus during SS.

CALLED CHURCH CONFERENCE

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 6 PM, FELLOWSHIP HALL

We will have a brief called church conference on Wednesday, June 14, to consider a change

order to Phase 2 of the Building project. As you are aware, we voted that any change order

over $5,000.00 must be approved by the church. The Building Committee is making the rec-

ommendation that while the sanctuary is unavailable this summer, we take the opportunity to

give it a fresh coat of paint. The proposed cost of painting the sanctuary would be $15,000.

The Building Committee makes the motion that we paint the sanctuary for that cost. Thank you

for your participation in this business item in the life of our church.

The final worship service in our Sanctuary prior to renovations is Sunday, June 25. Sunday,

July 2 will be our first worship service in the Fellowship Hall.

June Donations: 7

Canned fruit is our item for May—August. Our challenge is 30 cans a month of any type of

fruit. Will you please add a couple of cans to your cart as you shop? Fruit is a special treat for

many people. Thank you.

BREAD MACHINES NEEDED

Sunday, July 2 will be our first worship service in the Fellowship Hall during Phase 2 of our

building renovations. This first service will be a special creative worship service about Jesus

being the Bread of Life. All of the elements of worship will lead us together toward a mean-

ingful Lord’s Supper. We are in need of bread machines that we can borrow and use on that

Sunday. If you have a bread machine, please let Beth Heffner know and bring it to the church

office by Sunday, June 25. Thank you!

PASTOR’S COLUMN

"Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5

When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes

home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me,

for I have found my sheep that was lost.' 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy

in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who

need no repentance.” (Luke 15:4-7, NRSV)

On Saturday, May 27, our dog, Penny, got out of the fence and went missing. It

was about thirty minutes before we realized that she was missing. However, in that

time, she just disappeared. Penny has been our family dog since April 2006. She

was born in Hueytown, Alabama in Rebecca’s old neighborhood. We lived in Elon,

NC at the time, but Rebecca went home for about two weeks to help her parents clean out her grandmother’s house (she had passed away in September 2005). Penny

was one of six puppies. Her mother was a neighborhood dog that resembled an Irish

Wolfhound, a large shaggy dog. And, her father, we think, was one of two male,

shorthaired muts that roamed the same neighborhood. John Alan was learning to

talk and Rebecca put him on the phone and he said, “Puppies” referring to the litter.

Rebecca brought home Penny and Duke, the only two short-haired dogs. My par-

ents took Buffy, a long-haired from the same litter. Rebecca’s uncle took two pups,

while her sister took one of the pups. Rebecca’s parents adopted the father, while a

neighbor took in the mother. When we moved to Taylorsville in 2008, we found a

home for Duke, who was wild and rambunctious, and kept Penny, who was more

laid back and meek. Needless to say, Penny is the only one of the pups still living (we hope Duke is still alive, but we are not sure) at almost 11 & ½ years of age.

Penny has had an adventurous life. She had parvo, a virus that attacks the diges-

tive tracks of puppies and was nursed back to health at a vet in Burlington. She was

the beloved neighborhood dog in Taylorsville. We did not spend a lot on dogfood

because the neighbors, mostly retired folks, fed her constantly. She had her daily

routine of stops to make and people to see. That’s why she weighs so much. She

adjusted well to our move to Shiloh in 2012 and became primarily an inside dog. It’s

funny, she has taken up with our cat – first Chloe, who passed away in November

2013, and now, Ava. She primarily ignores them!

When Penny went missing, we did everything that we knew to do. We made full-

color flyers. We called neighbors. We used Facebook to get the word out. We even prayed for Penny. In fact, our pets are part of our nightly prayers. We asked God for

her safe return. We worried about her, hoped that she wasn’t suffering, and even if

she passed away, we hoped that it was painless and peaceful. We checked Animal

Control every day. Many of you even kept an eye out for her. We really appreciate

you for doing so.

So, Monday, when we checked Animal Control’s website, her picture was posted.

Someone returned her. We were overjoyed that Penny is back with us. I imagine

that’s how God feels when one of his lost sheep are found, or when one of his lost

children comes home.

God loves each of us individually. He does not rest until we are found. Can you

imagine the joy, the celebration and the love you will feel from your heavenly father when you came home? Or, when you come home?

Grace and peace,

Tim
