FROM THE DESK OF OUR PASTOR

Four times in today’s reading, Jesus uses a Greek word - trogein - that refers to a crude kind of eating, almost a gnawing or chewing. By using this term he is testing their faith in His Word, as today’s First Reading describes God testing Israel in the desert. The heavenly manna was not given to satisfy the Israelites’ hunger, as Moses explains. It was given to show them that “one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” In today’s Psalm, too, we see a connection between God’s Word and the bread of life. We sing of God filling us with “finest wheat” and proclaiming his Word to the world. Even as the Israelites grumbled in the desert, many in today’s Gospel cannot accept that Word. Even many of Jesus’ own followers abandon Him after this discourse. But His words are Spirit and life, the words of eternal life. In the Eucharist we are made one with Christ. We have His life in us and have our life because of Him. This is what Paul means in today’s Epistle when He calls the Eucharist a “participation” in Christ’s body and blood. We become in this sacrament partakers of the divine nature. This is the mystery of the faith that Jesus asks us to believe. And He gives us His promise: that sharing in His body and blood that was raised from the dead, we too will be raised up on the last day.

CONGRATULATIONS TO FATHER MARK DUNMIRE

Bishop Edward C. Malesic ordained Father Mark R. Dunmire to the priesthood on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. Please keep Father Dunmire in your prayers and continue to pray for all people discerning God’s call to the priesthood.

FLAG DAY

In honor of Flag Day, the local chapter of the American Legion will host a flag ceremony at our church this Sunday, June 14, 2020 immediately following our 10:00 a.m. Mass on our parish grounds. Everyone is welcome to attend this ceremony.

Loving God, you call all who believe in you to grow perfect in love by following in the footsteps of Christ your Son. You have called Father Mark Dunmire who will serve you as a newly ordained priest. By his way of life, may he provide a convincing sign of your Kingdom for the Church and the whole world. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST - CORPUS CHRISTI

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is also known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which translates from Latin to "Body of Christ." This feast originated in France in the mid thirteenth century and was extended to the whole Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264. This feast is celebrated on the Thursday following the Trinity Sunday or, as in the USA, on the Sunday following the Solemnity.

This Solemnity calls us to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ, the Holy Eucharist, and the Church. The primary purpose of this Solemnity is to focus our attention on the Eucharist. The opening prayer at Mass calls our attention to Jesus' suffering and death and our worship of Him, especially in the Eucharist. At every Mass our attention is called to the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Christ in it. The secondary focus of this Solemnity is upon the Body of Christ as it is present in the Church. The Church is called the Body of Christ because of the intimate communion which Jesus shares with his disciples. He expresses this in the gospels by using the metaphor of a body in which He is the head. This image helps keep in focus both the unity and the diversity of the Church. The Feast of Corpus Christi is commonly used as an opportunity for public Eucharistic processions, which serves as a sign of common faith and adoration. Our worship of Jesus in His Body and Blood calls us to offer to God our Father a pledge of undivided love and an offering of ourselves to the service of others.

REFLECTION

It is no wonder that followers of Christ are called the Body of Christ. After all, sharing in the same spiritual food and sacred meal, they become what they eat and reveal the Divine Image. There is so much power for healing in the community of believers. Through the Eucharist, Christ becomes as present in those who have partaken of his Body and Blood as he has the elements themselves. The very presence of God touches the depths of the human soul and visits a part of us that no human being can ever hope to explore. We are God’s. The sacred Eucharistic meal is a celebration of intimacy, the reunion of two loves in constant search of and longing for the other. The community of believers receives the power and the presence to touch and heal in the name of the One they have welcomed within. It is now within their grasp to change the way life is lived and to more intentionally put into practice the Beatitudes that the Divine Guest has revealed. We are asked to be like Christ and work to create a world of sufficiency, where the greed of some no longer creates the want of others but where all of God ’s children can find a home and a place at the table of life. The One who makes a home within calls us to live a life that transforms. We are changed ourselves and now become agents of change for others. We are the Body of Christ. God is with us. We have been nourished. Sadly, many are afraid to try. We know what we are called to do, but we struggle with feelings of doubt as to whether God really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Do our systems have to change? Is it possible that we somehow missed the mark when we put all of our social networks in place and established the business of our lives? Perhaps we have to radically rethink our approach and that can scare us. We might have to give something up or change, and we don’t want to. As long as want, injustice, division, prejudice, and scarcity still exit, there is tremendous work for the Body of Christ.
