Brad Mehldau piano
A regular performer both as a solo artist and with his Trio, Brad Mehldau has toured and recordedextensively with great success. His musical personality forms a dichotomy. First and foremost animproviser, he cherishes the surprise and wonder that can arise from a spontaneous musical idea. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music and it informs everything heplays, the musical thought serving as an expressive device. Continuing his two-season Wigmoreresidency, he is sure to build on his reputation for riotous, thought-provoking music-making.

Wihan Quartet
Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 6 in F minor Op. 80
Brahms String Quartet in A minor Op. 51 No. 2
Mendelssohn’s F minor Quartet was one of his final statements, composed in the immediate aftermath of the death of hisbeloved sister Fanny: within a few months Mendelssohn himself was dead. Brahms took two decades before he was happy topublish his first two quartets and this, the second of them, is richly imbued with his unique blend of nostalgia and romance.

Barber Cello Sonata Op. 6Chopin Cello Sonata in G minor Op. 65
Schumann Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor (arr. Isserlis)Dohnányi Cello Sonata in Bb minor Op. 8
A varied programme of sonatas by four composers for whom importantanniversaries fall in 2010. Samuel Barber (b. 1910) and Erno von Dohnányi(d. 1960) wrote their only cello sonatas at the beginnings of their careers;both works are full of youthful energy, passion and originality. In contrast, the sonatas of Schumann and Chopin (both b. 1810) were written towards the end of the composers’ respective lives; both men were already far advanced along stylistic roads that had taken them intohitherto unexplored worlds. Curiously, neither of these two late sonatas have achieved the popularity of the composers’ earlierpieces, but both Dénes and I believe passionately in the genius of both works, and are happy to celebrate the bicentenarywith these two comparatively little-known masterpieces. Till Fellner piano
Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 30 in E Op. 109; Piano Sonata No. 31 in Ab Op. 110
Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor Op. 111
As the logical climax to his survey of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, Till Fellnerreaches the visionary group of three masterpieces which constitute a perfect distillation ofthe composer’s famous ‘third period’. Although not his last works for the instrument, thethree sonatas nevertheless cover so much emotional and technical ground that any furthercontribution to the genre may well have seemed superfluous to Beethoven who wouldincreasingly turn to the cryptic utterance suitable for Bagatelles.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky brings a veritable harvest of lyrical expression from the two giants ofRussian song composition. Tchaikovsky’s often anguished introspection is neverthelesscouched in near-Mozartian perfection, which contrasts vividly with the more unselfconsciousromantic outpouring of his protégé Rachmaninov.

Schubert’s string quartet whichhe based on the song ‘Death and the Maiden’ has an air of desperate energy anddeep lyrical introspection. Lovers of Wagner will recognise a very familiar leitmotifin the Scherzo’s hammering rhythms, while Schubert-lovers will revel in theinimitable charm of the single movement of a remarkable quartet which he sadlynever carried to conclusion.

Along with his wife and duo partner Tini Mathot, he concludes the residency with a recital of harpsichord and organmusic which will demonstrate his authoritative virtuosity in works ranging from Bach and Buxtehude, Handel andCouperin, to Mozart and Bach’s eldest son CPE. Another son, WF, also gets a look-in, as do less well-known figures suchas Soler, Cabanilles and Bruna. Great Britain is represented by a characteristic Fancy from Welsh-born Thomas Tomkins.

Britten Serenade Op. 31 for tenor, horn and strings
The English School – Four Centuries of English Music
The AAM’s showcase of English music contrasts Baroque giants Purcell and Handel with 20th-century masters Finzi andBritten. Britten often declared his debt to Purcell – indeed, he co-authored a ‘Homage’ on the 250th anniversary of thecomposer’s death. Finzi, some 12 years Britten’s senior, saw himself as heir to a more lyrical English tradition. In 1945 hesummed up his view of his younger contemporary with characteristic bluntness: ‘I’m allergic to Britten’s music ... what hebrings off isn’t worth a rat’s dropping.’ This concert is an opportunity to compare and contrast!

NASH ENSEMBLE WEEKEND: THERESIENSTADT 1941–45
A weekend of Films, Talks and Concerts
The name Theresienstadt – or Terezín to give it its Czech name – has becomesynonymous with the greatest propaganda lie in the Nazi’s reign of terror. Virtuallythe whole of the Jewish cultural elite was forced to live in the concentration camplocated 60km from Prague. The Nazis used the camp as a showcase, allowinginmates to stage a whole range of entertainments, including plays, concerts, operas, cabaret and café concerts, for the entertainment of visitors who even includedthe International Red Cross. In reality the prisoners were being starved, which, combined with hard labour, meant a daily struggle for survival. There could beno greater contrast between this and the extraordinarily varied and creative work produced by the camp inmates.
The Nash weekend seeks to offer a reminder of these struggles through the presentation of films and talks (which includeconversations with camp survivors), a children’s art exhibition, and the performance of works by composers whose exceptionaltalent was so cruelly cut short. Ultimately the ensemble celebrates the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and intolerance.
Theresienstadt ExhibitionDuring the weekend there will be an exhibition of the Terezín children’s drawings and a short film, used for propaganda bythe Germans, but also showing the real losses of those sent on the transports to their death.

Florestan Trio
Dvorák Piano Trio in Bb Op. 21; Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 49
The Florestan Trio takes its name from one of Schumann’s imaginary creative characters, representing the fiery, passionate side of his nature. When he heard Mendelssohn’sFirst Piano Trio in 1838 he declared it to be the masterpiece of its time. To complementthe lyrical ardour and compositional dexterity of one of Europe’s most celebrated masters, the programme opens with a relative rarity, Dvorák’s First Trio, which the Florestanshave done much to rehabilitate through its complete cycle on the Hyperion label.
