Secretary’s Notes,

A strong contingent from 1009 gathered on Saturday 11th May at the EoB for a trip down to Devon to join

up with Exeter MGOC for this year's More 2 Sea event. Another 2 cars swelling the final number en route.

With entries limited to 100 cars it made for a tremendous representation from Southampton and New For-

est MGOC which gained a vote of gratitude from the our Exeter colleagues. After a nice meal and a drink

or two Saturday night it was an early start Sunday for the 100 mile tour. The route this time took us via

Powderham Castle and Babbacombe stopping for a coffee break at Cockington Forge before heading for

Slapton Sands (part of the sight of the ill fated Exercise Tiger, a large scale rehearsal for the D-Day land-

ings) and on to the Tank Memorial at Torcross. The group having now split with so much to see made their

way up onto Dartmoor and yes – rain. For Kris and I it was foot down for Two Bridges, Bovey Tracey and

finally the Riverside Inn car park. We were some of the first there but it wasn't long before all the others

arrived and we sat down for a lovely cream tea with fresh scones and oodles of strawberry jam and clotted

cream. While some had booked a second night at the Exeter Court Hotel (good idea) others had to make

the journey back to Southampton for work on Monday. Congratulations to Exeter MGOC for producing

another memorable event and for those who have not tried it I recommend you do next time.

Warm sunshine greeted those who decided to try the DAMSC's new venue at Upton Country Park, Poole

on Sunday 26th May. It was a case of park up, picnics out and enjoy the warm spring temperatures that

have been a rarity for the past few months. Not unlike Kingston Lacey there was a very relaxed atmos-

phere with live music and plenty to see and do in the Manor House and on the shoreline just a short walk

from the classic cars, if you felt slightly energetic. The Sprite and Midget club like most other car clubs

donate proceeds from these annual events to charity and so it is important we support them when ever pos-

sible. Perhaps next year we could take a few more cars.

I am writing this newsletter on the Saturday prior to the NFR which will be reported in full next month.

However, can I thank all those who came along to the EoB on Thursday night. Once again there was a tre-

mendous team effort made putting the route books together but we did it. The whole club deserves a huge

pat on the back for all the hard work that has gone into ensuring this year's event is as enjoyable and re-

warding as all previous runs. The weather forecast will definitely boost numbers.

Coming up in July we have the MGOC's 40th birthday celebrations over the weekend of 13th/14th at the

Swavesey headquarters. There is a club stand booked so if you would like to join us there is still room.

ROY

Our thanks go out to Bulldog MG from Twyford who not only sponsored

us this year but who put the latest models of a Petrol & Diesel MG6 through

their paces by driving them around the route, they also judged the cars taking

part and provided us with seven lucky trophy winners.

Editors notes.

John Anderson

I have been sent an e-mail from Dr Christian Bianco who is organising an MG meeting in October 2013

For all MG Cars built between 1924 and 2005

It will be between 24th-27th October touring the Dolomites / southern Tyrol, meeting at St Michael in

Eppan an der weinstribe.

If anyone is interested I can supply more details with e-mails address if required.

Possibly the biggest event this year is the MGOC 40th anniversary event at the MGOC

headquarters at Swavesey. This will be on the 13th / 14th of July 2013 where two days of

events , fun and trips around the workshops and Cambridge. There are camping facilities for the

weekend. Roy is looking for any club members who are interested on going to this event to do

our little bit . More information provided to anyone thinking of going, and setting up our area

club stand.

Price £10:00 per car with two occupants per day for advanced tickets or £12:00 on the day.

By the time this goes to publication we will have had our Club’s 2013 New Forest Run and I am sure it

will be a great success as have our previous ones, well run and well attended. Along with our event we have at-

tended several other events run by various MG and other clubs.

Our May monthly meeting was again a full house and more new members turned up , so we welcome both

Sue & Graham and Janet & George who I hope will attend many more meetings and join in with our activities

throughout the rest of the year.

What a great bunch of people

our 1009 members are, the lovely

Linda Taylor was at hand to give a 70

year old man from Barton a drive

around the forest in her Midget.

This was a birthday surprise

laid on by his family who had con-

tacted the club to see if it could be

done as he had owned a Midget in

his younger days.

WELL DONE LINDA & 1009

I have been given a Workshop Manual for an MGB. It is British Leyland Part No. AKD 3259 13th Edition issued in 1974. It is in very

good condition with all loose leaf pages intact and generally clean in a turquoise vinyl cover.

If you are interested in owning this reasonably rare manual please enter your bid in a sealed envelope and give to me or send a an email

to [email protected]. The blind auction will be open until end of May and I will indicate the winner at first meeting in June.

Proceeds will be split to club and local Totton doctor's charity. As a guide I have placed a reserve of £20 on the manual. I will bring to

the next meeting in May.

ROBIN

It has been suggested that the club members who can’t do our run on the day should combine it with

a Sunday Lunch sometime in July. This can be talked about at the next few meetings and a date set so we

can all enjoy the run this year. Contact Linda or Jane who can sort it out.

Four cars and their crew went to Upton House for the

DAMSC gathering and picnic on Sunday 26th. Members met

at the Empress at 09:30 and had a great sunny day out.

Our mid month meeting saw us gather around the

tables at the Red Shoot in Linwood. It was a good turn-

out and we all had a lot to say to each other on all man-

ner of topics ...the biggest topic was “How close the club

run was getting and how well prepared we are” just like

all the years before…...Now lets have some good

weather.

Robin has confirmed that our Club Xmas dinner dance will again be held at the Sway

Manor Hotel. The date is set for the 14th of December and menus and more informa-

tion will follow shortly.

1009 Southampton & New Forest MGOC , New Forest Run 2nd June 2013.

The 15th club run was this year sponsored by Bulldog MG of Twyford. The run was about 79 miles and

there was a slightly shorter (by 10 miles) route near the end of this years run which would finish at Breamore

House.

When you registered at the start you will have enjoyed a tea or coffee and our usual Bacon Bap before

you set off. At the finish you had the chance to visit the House and Museum using your route book to gain a

discount from 1pm onwards.

The Club had a nice set of prizes from the Raffle and as an extra, like last year, the club also had a

Hampshire Hamper which was won by John & Alix Lee in their 1973 Midget., using the number inside the

route book. There were also seven Trophies given out to the various classes as indicated and the furthest trav-

elled was won by (within the UK ) Brian & Tracey Lee…….and a special award to Dirk De Meyer & Debora

Baecke who travelled all the way from Belgium but sadly not all the way in their MG. They did the run in a

rental car as the MGB suffered from clutch failure in Midhurst.

Judging the cars took place from 14:30 and the Raffle and trophies presented from 15:30. More info in next

months publication.

Club members Mick & Betty

won the prize donated by the

Empress of Blandings.

On Saturday the 1st the club had a pre run skittles

night at the White Hart at Cadnam. Thanks to all

who turned up to what turned out to be a great

night out.

Several visitors turned up to join our fun

night and Husband and wife Adrian & Val won

winning man and the wooden spoon with Jan Bitten

winning the high scoring womens prize.

Roy had some relatives over the weekend and

both Michael & Sonja Davies from Mold took part

in the skittles

Exeter MGOC Moor to Sea Run 2013.

Sunday 12th May heralded the annual Moor2Sea Run hosted by Exeter MGOC. This event, limited to 100 cars,

has attracted a strong following from our own club and this year was no exception. Nine cars set off from the

Empress on Saturday late morning and met with another at The Blue Vinny pub at Puddletown for a light

lunch. The A35 was left at Winterbourne to pass through Abbotsbury and West Bay with superb views of Lyme

Bay. Rejoining the A35 at Bridport we soon left it again to pass through Lyme regis and take the coast road to

Exeter. Time was allowed to call into Sidmouth and enjoy the bracing air and enjoy an ice cream and comfort

break.

Our ten cars arrived at the Exeter Court Hotel at Kennford, meeting up with two three others who made their

way down separately, so we had 13 cars in all from 1009.

An evening meal and drinks! was taken at the nearby Gissons Inn.

Members were out early cleaning and polishing and looking at the skies with the question 'will it or won't it?'

Rain that is! Of course we took our tops off and although cool we enjoyed the roof's off for most of the day al-

though some cars did manage to miss the rain and fog of Slapton and Dartmoor during the afternoon.

We set off at 1000 for 96 miles of scenery and the occasional game along the way. It was difficult to keep 13

cars together and it was easier to let groups make their own way. The route took us along the Exe estuary, along

the sefront of Torquay and the pretty village of Cocklington nearby. The route made general progress to the SW

and the tank memorial at Slapton Sands before doubling back and working across to Dartmoor before finishing

at Bovey Tracey at the Riverside Inn for a cream tea and prizes.

The 1009 MG Blanket was touted heavily with 16 books and four tickets being sold at the beginning and end

points.

Some members returned to Southampton while others were able to enjoy a weekend of it and stayed an extra

night back at Kennford.

It will be the 25th Anniversary Moor2Sea Run next year. We will looking eagerly for the notification and appli-

cation.

Well done Roger Mayo and his team at Exeter MGOC and to our attending members.

Robin

POPHAM bank holiday show, auto jumble and fly-in

We were not sure what to do on the bank holiday Monday and we did not

know who else was going to be there from our club. But as the weather

was good we drove up to Popham, an event we had been to several times,

There were less planes flying in than we had seen before and there were

more sellers with stands providing all sorts of plane and car related items.

We walked among the stalls looking for bargains but only came

away with two MG stickers. After a coffee we walked along the line of

planes and came back to the main event the collection of cars on display.

There were some cars I had not seen for years , or some similar to ones I

had owned in the past but of course it was the MG’s we had come to see

and here are a few of what was on display.
