Concerns have been raised by residents centering around infrastructure, the importance of heritage, and the establishment of a Community Fund to benefit the area. The increased volume of traffic would create problems for those using the R152, it was claimed, as the plant would operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days of the year, with 600,000 of mixed waste and 10,000 of fossil fuel along with the production of 1 million tonnes. ‘This represents a serious amount of traffic on the R152 It is my belief that the current road infrastructure to support this 10 year plan will not be sufficient for this development when operating at its full capacity,’ said Cllr Sharon Keogan. A number of changes have been suggested including widening of the Beamore junction, already an accident black spot, creating a footpath with lighting from the Indaver plant to the roundabout at Platin, Drogheda, creating a footpath from Irish Cement to Donore village, landscaping the area, providing for traffic back up at entrance to Irish Cement, implementing a ban on HGV lorries in Duleek and Donore villages, and an environmental impact study to ascertain the effects on the locality. The impact of industry on heritage, culture and tourism interests in the area must be explored. With Oldbridge and Newgrange in close proximity, and the recent Carranstown Henge find, a late Neolithic (c.2,500BC) structure, there are a number of yet-to-be-explored sites in the locality. The ban on local residents building homes in the Buffer Zone of Brú na Bóinne was also noted. It was suggested that a public awareness and communication programme should be put in place to ensure that members of the public can obtain information and Real Time data on the facility, as well as continuous emission monitoring. As Irish Cement is a highly profitable company (CRH profits were €761 million in 2014), it is vital that a Community Fund be established to support facilities and services to benefit the community in the catchment area. A suggested contribution of 5% of the capital cost of the facility and an annual contribution per tonne of waste accepted into the facility, linked to the consumer price index was made. Precedent has been established with similar Community Gain Fund applied to applications made by Indaver and Knockarley in recent years. BORD PLEANÁLA WILL DECIDE

A planning application lodged by Irish Cement for development at their Platin site to enable the increased use of alternative fuels for electricity generation, has been referred to An Bord Pleanla by Meath County Council (Irish Cement Platin LB151288).

Concerns have been raised by residents centering around infrastructure, the importance of heritage, and the establishment of a Community Fund to benefit the area.

This represents a serious amount of traffic on the R152 It is my belief that the current road infrastructure to support this 10 year plan will not be sufficient for this development when operating at its full capacity, said Cllr Sharon Keogan.

Welcome to Garda Sgt David Campbell, who joins colleagues in the Duleek Garda station. Formerly based in Ashbourne, Sgt Campbell brings the number of Garda stationed in Duleek to four. He received a warm welcome from the community at the recent Road Safety Roadshow in Duleek courthouse. At the Roadshow, children learned about road safety and received safety goodie bags which included Hi Viz jackets to keep them safe on the roads. This was seen as an important issue as a number of local children have been struck by vehicles in the area recently. The event was attended by Communty Garda Aishling Connor, Garda Denise Paul from Duleek, Sarah OConnell of the RSA and Road Safety Officer Michael Finnegan.

Sgt Campbell has set up a Facebook page Duleek Garda Station to keep the community updated on crime, passports, gun registration, opening times, etc. Please Like this page on Facebook and keep up to date with issues and activities. Contact Duleek Garda Station on 041-982 3222

Homesick emigrant returnsRecently qualified nurse Kate Crosby from Duleek, emigrated to Vancouver, Canada with her boyfriend, where she hoped to work as a nurse. Unfortunately, nursing registration proved to be a long drawn-out process, which saw Kate work in retail instead.

Although she found Canada a lovely place, homesickness overwhelmed the 24 year old, and affected the couples experience. After almost a year, her nursing registration was denied, and Kate found herself missing the wards, and decided not to reapply due to the high cost and long wait.

Saying, Canada didn't work out for me, but I'm glad I tried, Kate has written a blog about her travels, which was recently published in The Irish Times. It may resonate with those thinking of emigrating, and those already away. Read Kates blog on http://sheknowskatie.blogspot.ie/

Innovative swimming poolWith Ireland currently bathed in sunshine from coast to coast, people have been taking their annual opportunity for a dip in the sea or anywhere they can to cool off. These three lads in Duleek went one better and took matters into their own hands.

They built themselves a DIY pool in the back garden. The pool was built from stacked tyres, a silage pit cover and of course hope and dreams. It took 5 hours to assemble and 2 days to fill with water from a hose, but judging by their faces it looks well worth it! The pool recently featured on Ireland AMs photo gallery.

Dragons DenFrom leaving school to work as a farm labourer when he was just 11 years old, to potential international business success, 61-year-old John OHare from Duleek has come a long way, achieving the support of Dragon Barry OSullivan and 100,000! Appearing on Dragons Den, John was looking for 100,000 for a 20% stake in his company which has created a self-weighing case. Having seen his 16-year-old daughter struggle to weigh a suitcase, John came up with the idea. Emma has scoliosis and could not lift the case and weigh it at the same time. Johns newly invented suitcase weighs itself at the touch of a button, lights up inside and shows you what weight it is. John sees his invention helping everybody to avoid excess baggage charges, but especially those using wheelchairs or with other physical challenges. The case will also text

you from the baggage carousel to let you know its on its way.

The case is patented in Ireland and the UK with a patent pending in America, where it was already a hit at trade shows.

GUILLAIN-BARR SYNDROMEA Health Service Executive investigation into cases of a rare and potentially fatal disease in Co Meath has found no evidence they were caused by environmental factors. The review found the cases of Guillain-Barr syndrome (GBS) were unrelated and the most likely explanation was a preceding infectious disease.

The syndrome, a nerve disorder, is the most common cause of acute paralysis worldwide, with an incidence of one to two cases per 100,000 people.

Local environmental groups, whose concerns prompted the HSE to commission the report, said the report left too many questions unanswered. The Louth Meath Health Protection Group and the Drogheda Environmental Group had raised concerns over the presence near Duleek of an incinerator operated by Indaver Ireland, an Irish Cement factory and an abattoir. The review identified three people, from an initial six, with GBS in the village but said this number was in keeping with the expected incidence for the disease.

Patrick OBrien, a spokesman for both environmental groups, expressed disappointment with the findings, while accepting it was very difficult to pinpoint the exact causes of GBS. Environment and health protection groups say that the report leaves many questions unanswered. A motion proposed by Duleek Councillor Sharon Keogan for the establishment of an EPA office in the Duleek area was unanimously passed at a meeting of Laytown-Bettystown Municipal District of Meath County Council.
