RESTAURANT InSpired Fridays dine out for less Joe Darling’s target of €10,000 for a trained companion dog, has al- most been reached, thanks to the generosity of the local community through the fundraising initiative A Dog for Joe. So far, €7,055 toward the training of a special- ist assistance dog for lit- tle Joe Darling from Duleek, has been raised, with just €3,000 more to go. Joe has been al- located a dog called Walter through ‘My Ca- nine Companion’. Wal- ter has already started out on a two year train- ing programme at a cost of €10,000. 10 year old Joe suffers from severe autism and epilepsy. Most recently was a Vintage Car Show held in Sage & Stone, thanks to Ciara Lynch Doyle, Mick and all their helpers. So many cars turned up, the weather was amazing, music fantastic, and there was plenty of hot food, ice cream and other refresh- ments available. The event raised €1,500 with a further €363 in bucket donations In Stamullen, an ‘80s fancy dress disco was held in Whyte’s Lounge which was both great craic and a terrific fundraiser for A Dog for Joe. Organised by Maria Dore’s Weight Watchers, the ‘80s night raised €1,300. A Monster Raffle was held, with a top prize of B&B for two at the Her- bert Park Hotel, Balls- bridge, along with dinner and a compli- mentary chauffeur for transport! Some win- ners actually returned their prizes to be auc- tioned off for further funds.The fancy dress was amazing, with everyone entering into the spirit. Thanks to DJ Glen for keeping the party going. A number of supporters also took part in the re- cent Women’s Mini Marathon to raise funds. Coming up are Sheep dog trials at Power’s farm, Ballmacan (Col- lon/Slane road) on Sun- day 12 July. Duleek girl Melissa Shanley will represent Louth in the forthcomingMiss Ireland 2015 contest, whilst Elysha Brennan will represent Meathin the Rose of Tralee – the first Meath Rose ever to qualify for the fi-nals!Elysha (22) is from Bettystown and is a past pupil of Gormanston Col-lege. Her parents are Christine and Donal, and has a brother Sean andKate, twins. Elysha is studying medicine in the Royal College of Sur-geons and his hoping to specialise in paediatrics. She loves performingin pantos and took part in a few shows in the TLT. Unfortunately Elyshawas diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer, just beforeher Leaving Certificate, and underwent treatment for it. She is now incomplete remission.Melissa (24) attended the Sacred Heart school in Drogheda, and has justfinished a science course in DIFE. She now plans to take some time outto concentrate on the Miss Ireland final in July, although there are a fewevents lined up before that.Her parents are Pat and Mary Shanley from Main Street, Duleek.Best of luck to both of our local ambassadors this summer!

Donore provided a perfect route forriders on the An Post Rás, with theeventual overall winner Lukas Postl-berger of the Tirol Cycling Team.It was the first time since 1999 thatDrogheda hosted a stage finish that at-tracted thousands to watch. The stagedeparted from the post office on Sun-day morning with local rider, Donoreman Darragh Campbell riding into hishome village. Darragh rides for Amer-ican team, Novo Nordisk. Local indi-viduals and groups wished Darraghwell with banners and flags hangingout to greet him, such as St Mary’sGFC and cycling enthusiast Jim Gor-man. Another local rider was IanRichardson from Slane who took thetitle of Best County Rider.

John Duggan (33) fromBellewstown is now being administered Soliris, cost-ing almost half a million euro per patient per year!John was diagnosed in 2010 with paroxysmal noctur-nal haemoglobinuria, which causes red blood cells tobe broken down and passed out by the kidneys. Hisquality of life and life expectancy were both affectedgreatly by the condition, but now he is feeling thebenefits of treatment, describing it as a ‘lifechanger’.Following a campaign mounted by his wife Aileenhighlighting the plight of sufferers who were deniedthe drug by the HSE, and supported by local politi-cians, the drug was offered. John will get Soliris onceevery two weeks for the rest of his life. The youngcouple is looking forward to getting on with their lifenow that this major hurdle has been crossed.

Memorials mark theirmemory at the school and atMooretown, Navan, site of theaccident.The girls who lost their liveson 23 May 2005 were SineadLedwidge, Lisa Callan,Deirdre Scanlon, Clare Mc-Cluskey and Aimee McCabe,all of whom lived in a 3 mileradius of each other in the Yel-low Furze/Beauparc/Rosna-ree/Kentstown areas. Bands included ShakenEdge, Wa’el Shabo, Mark Do-herty and the Starling Army,

rave review on Joe’s LocalBands! Dublin band The Stolesperformed, as did Davina & TheMessangers, Niamh Flynn ,Chloe Leddy, duo Reilymakay,Marcin Fabisiak Daithi and Philand Andy Casey. Local hero’sRC Lo-Fi The Furry Gilberts,Drogheda Indie/Rock group TheSelfless, Fuzz Gigolo, BlackSvan, Low Light Gathering,Gerry Hodgers and the headlin-ers Guns N Roses Tribute.

Duleek Heritage Group is planning to re-enact the famous ‘DuleekBizarre’ which took place 100 years ago, at this year’s Duleek FairDay. The original Bizarre – a race from Drogheda to Duleek - tookplace over a week in September 1915 and was won by a MrMcHugh from Naul.This year’s race will see just two runners compete – one fromLouth and one from Meath, supplied by local GAA clubs, Wolfe-tones and Duleek GFC. Members of The Men’s Sheds will make awooden cup which will be presented to the winner. The event willbe officially started by the Mayor of Drogheda, as it was in 1915.Duleek Fair Day takes place over two days this year, Saturday 15and Sunday 16 August and promises to be a great event with freefamily fun and entertainment for people of all ages. There will beseveral community events and activities for all the family over thetwo days. Organisers are searching for teams for the ‘Pubs andClubs’ competition. Tayto Park’s new rollercoaster, Cu Chulainn, hasopened, with great reports on how high it is and howfast it is! Standing 32 meters high, this ride is thehighest inverted wooden rollercoaster in Europe! (SeeYoutube and Cllr Sharon Keogan enjoying the ‘rideof her life’!)Work began on Cu back in August 2014 and now itweighs more than 900 tonnes, most of it wood, with100 tonnes of steel.Also new at Tayto Park is the Dinosaurs Alive exhi-bition featuring animatronic versions of the mighty TRex and many more dinosaurs. As well as this, there’sa new three carriage road train that will transport vis-itors from one end of the park to the other, a steamtrain track ride and the only 5D cinema in Ireland.

The eternal question of ‘What to do with the kids over the summer’is easily answered in this area, as there’s lots to do! Summer campsare associated with many play groups, creches and national schools,as well as local sports clubs. We are lucky to have even more in thegreater Duleek area, with Pudden Hill offering lots for younger kids,whilst still challenging the older ones. Activities at Pudden Hill in-clude karting, paintballing, sof play, archery, shooting simulator, anda new Animal Farm and outdoor playground. There’s also a café andoutdoor picnic area. The Zone extreme activity centre features themore dynamic activities, whilst Huckleberry’s Den and the soft playarea are aimed at younger children’s enjoyment.New to this area is Celtic Adventures – and if it’s excitement yourkid wants – this is it! Activities with Celtic Adventures, who arebased at Newgrange Lodge, Donore, include wall climbing, spacehopper racing, grass sledding, archery, obstacle course, team games,etc. And in the water there’s kayaking, canoing and stand up paddleboarding. All equipment and bus trips is provided and included inthe price. Courses run in Donore from 29 June–3 July and 20-24July and 27-31 July (10am-3pm), costing €120 per child.Activities at Celtic Adventures are suitable for individuals, clubs,groups, organisations, company team building, birthdays, celebra-tions and more. They are aimed at adults as well as youngsters andhave already proved popular with local groups. Celtic Adventures

are playing a big part in Drogheda Maritime Festival as they organ-ise ‘It’s A Wipeout’ challenge! Teams of up to 10 are welcome tocompete.

Duleek AC batonsand bordersThey crossed the border for the NewryMarathon relay as 3 of the club’s adult mem-bers took part in the 26.2mile course / 42km.In perfect conditions for running GrahamByrne kicked off proceedings by running astrong opening leg out along the towpath to-wards Poyntzpass. Graham then handed overthe baton to Mick Lannigan who ran a storm-ing second leg in what was his return to actionafter an injury enforced layoff. A contingent of 13 Duleek athletes competedand brought home 10 medals, a significant increase on last year!There were some great performances across all age groups and cat-egories, particularly among the juvenile athletes with many firsttimers. Fran Power took silver in the masters 3,000m.Ruby Hartford put in a great performance to take bronze in the

under 9 500m. Great performances also by Alisha Clarke, CiaraMcGroary, Naoise Donnell, Megan Nolan and Caitlin Callaghan.In the Under 9 Turbo Javelin Doireann Power took gold and MeganO’Connor took bronze. In the Girls Under 11 600m Chloe Dunnionand Leah Martin finished well.. Aisling Myles put in a great per-formance in the Under 14 girls 200m. Jake Meehan excelled in boththe Under 10 boys 500m and Turbo Javelin.The club congratulates all juvenile athletes who have representedthe club so well at a number of recent events. The track and fieldseason is in full swing and there are a number of local and provin-cial events for the clubs athletes to participate in and reap the re-wards of their training programme.

Cushinstown AC had six athletes competing at theLeinster Junior track and field championships re-cently, taking home an impressive 7 medals in whatwas a great days athletics!Shane Joyce was phenomenal in winning five indi-vidual gold medals as well as two relay medals toboot! Joyce threw a mighty 54.54m in the javelinand leapt out to 14.00m in the triple jump to claimgold and set two new personal bests. His throw of12.40m in the shot putt was enough to see off clubmate Michael O’Sullivan for the top spot. Michael

also competed in the discus, throwing well to finishsecond and Dónal Kearns came away with the goldmedal in the long jump.On the track. Dónal Kearns ran superbly in the110m hurdles to claim gold and for CaoimheLandy there was a new personal best in the 100m.Luke Redmond and Luke Mc Cabe battled it outin the 100m with Luke Redmond edging out thewin over his fellow club member. Redmond ran avery speedy 11.40s to claim silver and Mc Cabewas close behind with 11.43s for bronze.

The day came to an exciting end with the relay fi-nals. The Cushinstown team consisted of ShaneJoyce, Luke Redmond, Michael O’Sullivan andLuke Mc Cabe. The boys won the 4x100m com-fortably with four excellent performances.The first round of the National League took placein Templemore on Sunday. The club had NiallFlanagan competing for Meath Athletics. Niall rantwo solid races in the 100m and 200m finishing 4thand 5th in a time of 11.25s and 22.98s respectively,earning valuable points for the county.
