Some rumors are just rumors and then some actually do happen.

I’d heard a few months back

that Pioneer Used Cars, formerly Pioneer Lincoln-Mercury was wanting to acquire the Mitsubi-shi franchise for the Lubbock area. And on June 20th, that rumor became fact.

I spoke with Gary Warren, Gen-eral Sales Manager for Pioneer Mitsubishi about the recent acquisition of the Mitsubishi franchise and he was happy that the deal went through. He spoke highly of the vehicles, saying, “Mitsubishi produces dependable cars for the money. They sell economical cars and crossovers with great fuel economy and in this day when fuel prices hover around $3.50, consumers should seriously consider purchasing a new Mitsubishi.”

Mitsubishi this year has had sig-nificant gains in the US Market, up over 60% in year-to-date sales nationwide.

Mitsubishi’s models include the Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder, Endeavor, Galant, Lancer, Lancer Evolution, Lancer Sportback, Outlander and Outlander Sport.

Also coming this year is the 2012 Mitsubishi i, a new all electric vehicle. According to a press release, “The i is powered by the Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) tech-nology, the rear-wheel drive vehicle’s drive system includes a 49 kW (66 bhp) AC synchro-nous electric motor; an 88 cell, 330V lithium-ion battery pack and a single fixed reduction gear transmission. This electric motor is capable of producing peak torque of 145 lb. ft. almost

instantaneously when accelerat-ing from a standstill; the vehicle has a top speed of approxi-mately 80 mph and can go up to a very robust 85 miles/charge. Mitsubishi i models come with an 8-year/100,000 mile battery warranty.

As I was walking the lot, look-ing at the current models, one caught my eye. The 2011 Outlander Sport. Mitsubishi has an aggressive ad campaign featuring the Outlander and Outlander Sport on the “World’s Most Dangerous Test Drive,” the notoriously dangerous Yungas Road in Bolivia. Also known as the “Road of Death,” the road was carved into the hillside by Paraguayan prisoners in the 1930s and approximately 43 miles in length, this treacherous dirt road out of La Paz ascends to a stratospheric 15,260-foot elevation before rapidly descending to 3,900 feet at the town of Coroico. Changing road conditions due to rain, dust and dense fog add to the already formidable task of safely com-pleting the drive.

Warren also noted that Mitsubi-shi has the best Bumper-To-Bumper warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles and rates as low as 0% or rebates up to $4500. “We believe we have a winner with Mitsubishi and we think that if you try one, you’ll buy one.” He also said he sold his first one on the first day, “an Eclipse Spyder Convertible to a guy who saw us driving it to the lot.”

With the addition of the new car franchise, Don Cox, former Internet Manager for Pioneer would now become New Car Sales Manager.
